WOW – It’s all about the tools

I’m not a girly girl.  Pink was never my favorite color and I would honestly rather be pushing a piece of wood through a table saw, pulling a tree down with the tractor or pushing dirt with a bulldozer.  I like my tools.  I would rather use a power drill than a screwdriver.  I would rather use a chain saw than an ax.  Yes!  Really.  I learned long ago that it’s all about the tools when it comes to building or tearing something down.  I wasn’t quite as quick to learn that lesson when it came to scrapbooking.

I was an “embellishment snob”.  I wanted my pages to look original and I thought I had to make it from scratch to be unique.  Like anything else you make from scratch, it always takes a while longer but it usually looks, feels, tastes or smells better right?  I’m not so sure.  Let me show you what I mean.  Boo asked her creative team to do a little experiment.  She wanted to see what they could do with page sprays as their main embellishment so they went to work and created some real masterpieces.  This is one of the first pages she received by her CTM Mary John.  We ohhh’d and ahhh’d about it so much that Mary John agreed to do a tutorial.

She did the full step by step  and I was “WOWED”!  I simply couldn’t help but share it with you.

For this example Mary John used Boo’s new release Jardin L’Amour Page Kit, Page Sprays and Clusters.  This is a brand new release and they’re all on sale for a sweet 40% discount.

Okay let’s get started

 Step 1.

Fire up your favorite scrapping program.  Open bld_jardinlamour_paper (2) This will be your background.

Step 2.

Open *bld_jardinlamour_element (36)*
Resize the height to about 2556pixels
Place it on your background and slide it in the lower right corner
Add a drop shadow

Step 3.

Choose a vertical picture
Resize the height to about 1055 pixels
Place it on your background and slide it in the lower right corner
Add a drop shadow

Step 4.

Open bld_jardinlamour_pagespray 2 cluster
Rotate it 1 time to your left, turn it so it stands straight
Resize the height to about 2751pixels
Place it on your background and slide it on the right side of your picture, you only see the left side of this page spray
Add a drop shadow

Step 5.

Open bld_jardinlamour_pagespray 3 cluster
FlLip it horizontal
Resize the height to about 1351pixels
Place it on your background and slide it on the bottom of your picture, you will only see the top side of this page spray
Add a drop shadow

Step 6.

Open bld_jardinlamour_cluster (1)
Resize the height to about 1678pixels
Place it on your background and slide it in your lower left corner, it’s a little outside your page

Step 7.

Open your second photo
Place it on your background and slide this layer under the layer with bld_jardinlamour_cluster (1)
Mask or erase pieces of the picture that you see outside the frame
Merge the 2 layers and add a drop shadow

Step 8.

Open bld_jardinlamour_pagespray 1 cluster
Resize the height to about 2201pixels
Place it on your background and slide it to your upper left corner.
Add a drop shadow

Step 9.

Open bld_jardinlamour_element(54)
Flip it horizontal
Resize the height to about 685pixels
Place it on your background and slide it on the upper left corner of your first picture
Add a drop shadow

(It’s the butterfly shown below)

Step 10.

Open a picture that you can blend
resize the height to about 2370pixels
Place this on the layer that is your background
Use a soft eraser, make it really big (opacity about 60%) and softly erase the sides

Step 11.

Open bld_jardinlamour_wordart (6)
Resize the height to about 1038 pixels
Put in the middle off all the clusters, if you want to you can give it another color overlay
Finish off by merging your layers together and save as a  JPG

What do you think?  All that beautiful clustering from scratch or can you see a way to use some new tools?  I gave it a try myself.  I followed Mary Johns directions except I didn’t use the word art and I added two of the page spray masks in the upper right corner.  Not quite as elegant but I was working with pixelated photos so I made do with what I had.  This is my granddaughter Alexis on an outing in Japan.   I made this page in 5 minutes.  I’m pretty pleased!

I hope you’ll give it a try and I hope you’ll share your own masterpieces.  Boo has a nice assortment of pages sprays and clusters on sale now in her New Release Category but I went snooping around the store to see what else I could find.  As it happens, Snickerdoodle Designs has her Super Cute Artist In Me Collection on sale right now for 40% off and her clusters are just dreamy!

I also found these Cupid’s Kisses Clusters  (say that fast three times LOL) by Linda Cumberland – and wouldn’t you know it?  They’re on sale too!

Cinch up that tool belt and make something that will WOW!

A very special thanks to Mary John for making this tutorial.  Need more inspiration?  Visit Mary John’s Gallery.
