Challenges

Have you enjoyed the month long birthday celebration?  Have you won something or participated in one of the challenges?  The month isn’t over so there’s still time.  I love learning new things and I love being surrounded by talented and creative people.  I came home from Japan with a card full of photos and videos and I wanted some inspiration.  As luck would have it, I found plenty in the Layout Artist Challenge.  I have to say (so far) that Week 3 is my favorite because the focus was on enhancing your photos. Each participant was asked to share their “recipe”  or the steps they took to improve their photo.  Some of these photos went through a remarkable change and the recipes are listed right below each one so you can duplicate it.  I learned some very cool tips and saw some techniques that will really rock my photos.

I love this page by texjudy and you can see the steps she took to get this cool effect here.

This week, (Week 4) is all about double pages.  I was inspired in some way by each of these; so inspired in fact that I did my own and used a few of the techniques from week 3 on my photos.  I whipped it out pretty quick using one of Boo’s Let’s Make A Photo Book Pages Templates.

We visited the Kumumoto Castle one day so I spiffed the template up with Japanese Whispers and had it finished in no time.

You can see some great inspiration for more double pages in the Layout Artist Gallery and you still have time to find something to “wow” your week or your hobby in before the celebrations ends.  As luck would have it this time next week the NSD excitement will be in full swing.  Do you have your shopping list made?  Have you been keeping an eye on your favorite designers so you’re ready when the virtual doors open?  Fortunately, you don’t have to wait to get some great deals!  Today Boo is the Featured Designer and her entire store is 50% off plus she has a bonus (today only) you can try this double page photo book from her Blend It Like Boo Annum Imaginum Vol. 1 April absolutely FREE.  What better way to start your next photo book?

Love is finding your stocking filled with the things you love and knowing that the person who filled it knows you like nobody else in the world.

My husband and I are pretty good at choosing gifts for each other. We never do the typical department store Christmas, but rather focus on unique and personal items. This past Christmas, we went shopping together, splitting up in the store, each with a shopping basket and an agreement that if we crossed paths, we’d close our eyes and not peek. Oh how we giggled and teased: you’ll never guess what I got you! What fun it was to fill our stockings for each other and wrap the presents.

On Christmas Eve, after our family had left and it was just us with the dogs, we let the dogs open their gifts (yeah, we’re kinda cheesy like that) and then opened ours. Unpacking stockings was such fun! I was so excited when my husband found his blue penguin pattern duct tape, book light, and Uno cards, and then opened his Boba Fett alarm clock and stormtrooper wallet (yup, still cheesy). My stocking held Moonstruck chocolate truffles, a Cadbury Fruit and Nut bar like the ones we ate on our honeymoon, ear muffs for our dog walks, and a sheep for my sheep collection. My wrapped gift arrived late (to be honest, I was surprised his Boba Fett and stormtrooper arrived on time, we both seem to be late so often), so I didn’t get it until around New Years. Luminara candles like we had seen at the Tollgate Inn gift shop we’d been to weeks before; he remembered. The candles are battery powered, no flame, but they flicker like real candles (check them out here). I don’t think anyone in the world knows me better, truly.

This Valentine’s Day, love-themed kits abound. Cheesy to sweet, pretty and even wild, love is in the air here in digiland, and at theStudio, literally! Snickerdoodle Designs and Let Me Scrapbook have teamed up for February’s featured designer spotlight and challenge, creating a fairytale style collection they’ve called Love is in the Air. The collection includes boy and girl cupids, hearts, flowers, chocolates, and even a frog prince, all in a whimsical cartoon-style that is perfect for layouts about love and happily ever after.

You can find the Love is in the Air kit in theStudio shop at 30% off now, along with stacked papers, embossed papers, matts and border edges, borders, word art, journal cards, clusters, an alpha set, and glitters, all 30% off as well. There is a mini kit addon (get it here free and participate in the featured designer challenge!), an addon collection (45% off now), a bundled collection (57 % off now), and a huge entire collection (61% off now).

I was in scrappy mode this weekend and created a layout for the featured designer challenge, all about my Christmas stocking and definition of love using the free mini kit addon. I look forward to seeing all of your layouts too! If you enter, you’ll have a chance to win this collab, but don’t let that stop you from buying it. If you do and win, you’ll get a gift certificate instead!

To get you started with this collection, I’ve put together a frame for you to download. Just click on the image below. Happy scrapping, and best of luck in the challenge!

Welcome to another month of organizing fun! – I am always working on organizing when it comes to Digital Scrapbooking. Whether it’s tagging files, putting files away, figuring out what needs to be scrapped, uploaded, deleted, backed up etc – it’s an ongoing process. I’ll be popping in here, on theStudio blog, on the first Saturday of each month to provide a few tips and a little monthly ‘to do’ list to help us all clean up our digi-stashes, organize our files and clear up some space on our computers. There will be some carry over from month to month, as well as tips or suggestions and a mini-tutorial of something we’ll be learning to do specifically each month! This process will grow as we share tips and tricks and learn how others do their organizing!

Monthly Tasks:

1. Make sure you have downloaded and un-zipped all of your purchases from the last month. You don’t want any downloads to expire, and you want to make sure that all of your files unzip correctly so you don’t miss anything important!
2. Clean up your downloads folder. For me, cleaning out and putting away everything from my downloads folder at least once a month helps me feel on top of things.
3. Delete Duplicate Files (see June’s Get Organized post)
4. Empty your trash can/recycle bin.
5. Check your coupons list, delete expired coupons and add any new ones! (see June’s Get Organized post)
6. Create a list of photos to scrap from September (see Post)

Other things to do: Create a “to use” folder, update it with any new purchases (See September’s Get Organized Post, Follow along with this months tip (Holiday/Seasonal Kits)

October Tip/Trick: Holiday/Seasonal Kits

Many times seasonal and holiday themed kits are tricky to use for anything other than their created for purpose. Halloween kits and Christmas kits typically feature elements and colors that are very seasonal and holiday specific – and for me, I don’t want to have to sift through all of my holiday kits every time I’m looking for a kit to make a layout with!

I know there are a ton of different ways to organize your kits, but I’m sharing my way today. I have folders for different themes, and one big folder with the majority of my kits. Each kit is in a folder called Kit Name by Designer Name (and I’ve used my Color Coding System and Folder Icons to make it very visual) – so even if a designer moves stores, I still can easily search to see if I have a kit I like.

But those very specific seasonal and holiday themed kits, those need their own home. So I have another folder that these go, separated by theme.

This makes it easy to find exactly what I need when I want to scrap, say, some pictures from the Pumpkin Patch or our visit with the Easter Bunny!

Assignment: Think about how you have your kits organized. Does your system make sense? Is it easy for you to find something to scrap with, or do you find yourself searching for a long time to find a kit in the right colors or theme? If it’s not working for you, start thinking about what will work and get a new system in place! The more organized you are with your supplies, the easier it is for you to get your scrap on!

See you next month!

I would LOVE to get your questions and suggestions. I’m running low on my own organizing tips, so if you have any organization questions or suggestions, please share in the comments!

Hay Day, plus a freebie!

Have you ever seen those artists that dress up and pose as statues, you know, at amusement parks and such? I know some people think they’re funny, but they’re not my thing. I don’t like being spooked, and the pretending feels awkward to me. I will admit, though, there is one pretend statue that never seemed to [...]
