Do you ever wake up early on a Saturday morning, look out the window and see the sun yellow and bright against a clear blue sky and say to yourself ’what a perfect day to spend outside in my yard?’ As spring meanders in between occasional April showers, I find myself in this position now and then. I’m not usually an early riser I admit, but on days like this, I make an exception.

Just a few weeks ago, I got up bright and early and put on my “dirt clothes.” I filled a thermos with ice water and set up an extension cord with a floor fan to blow cool air on my garden bed as I worked (tip: the fan is a great way to keep cool while working in the sun). I got out my garden gloves, pinned my hair back, and plopped myself down in front of a flower bed full of weeds. For a couple of hours, I picked and pulled and scraped. I culled the bed of weeds and covered it in hazelnut shells (great ground cover that keeps the slugs out). Then, I filled the bed with hostas and Magic Carpets, flowering currants and hebes.

Soon, tulips started to emerge and the wildflower seeds I spread last year began to poke through the surface. The result was spectacular! Some time later, I arrived home from a long day at work and noticed that my currant was draped in glorious pink blooms. Behind it, a bushy plant whose name I do not know covered in cotton white flowers. I spotted my camera sitting on the center console of my car; I couldn’t resist. It was one of those spring photo opportunities that just can’t be missed.

While my photos are still on the camera, I am determined that the next chance I get I’m going to create a layout to show them off. I know just the kit for it, too. Spring Photos Ops by Snickerdoodle Designs was created specifically for photos like these; the ‘can’t miss’ moments of springtime.

What sort of spring photo opportunities have you encountered this year? An Easter Egg extravaganza perhaps? Or maybe a family portrait in the park? Check out these examples of photo ops captured and scrapped by other scrappers in theStudio gallery:

Whatever your photos ops may be, I think you’ll agree, this kit will help you scrap them! If you’ve got lots of photo ops to scrap, check out the extras too and complete the collection. In addition to the kit, you’ll find solids, border papers, clusters, glitters, and an alpha set all at 30% off in Snickderdoodle Designs’ shop. Or, grab the whole collection for 55% off.

To get you started, I’ve put together a frame for you to download using the Spring Photo Ops collection. Just click to download. I can’t wait to see your photos in the gallery!

Did you have a lucky and lively St. Patty’s Day yesterday? Perhaps you plucked a four-leaf clover, or found a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow (as if, right?!). Maybe you just had a jolly celebration with family and friends, and wore a touch of green to avoid an unlucky pinch. As for me, I always find that St. P’s is a great excuse for an Irish supper. In the US, a “traditional” St. Patrick’s Day meal is corned beef and cabbage, but like turkey on Thanksgiving, it gets old for me and I like to try new things.

Yesterday, I made a fantastic pork roast with apples and cabbage. I haven’t had a chance to scrap my recipe yet, but as always, I’ve got a kit in mind. New from Snickerdoodle Designs, a whimsical Irish-themed set of minis, Laddie Brian and Lassie Brianna (sold individually and as a collection).

While I love sharing my own stories here on theStudio blog, this time, I couldn’t beat Karen’s fairy bush tale – it’s the perfect accompaniment to this delightful collection. You can read about the fairy bush (and inspiration for Laddie and Lassie) on Karen’s blog here. And for my post, I’ll share my recipe instead.

1. Season 2.5lb roast with salt and pepper
2. Wrap roast in uncooked bacon until covered over
3. Place roast into a square glass baking dish and pour apple juice into the dish (about 1/2 in deep) over the roast
4. Bake at 350F until a meat thermometer reads 140F
5. Peel and chop 1 green apple
6. Slice 1/2 head small cabbage
7. Chop 1/2 yellow onion
8. In a saucepan, heat 1T butter and saute apple with onion until medium soft
9. Add cabbage and 1/2C chicken broth; season with salt and pepper
10. Pour juice from roast pan (about 1/2 to 3/4C) into saucepan and add 3T whisky
11. Heat over medium high heat, covered, until liquid is reduced and cabbage is soft
12. Add 1/3 cup heavy cream, stir and heat until warm
13. Slice roast and serve with apple-cabbage gravy and a glass of chardonnay (that’s what I did anyway!)
When I get a chance, I’ll scrap a page for my recipe and share it in theStudio’s gallery, but in the meantime, here are some other lovely layouts using Laddie Brian and Lassie Brianna (psst: check out the matching solids too):
Laddie Brian and Lassie Brianna, plus the matching solids are each 20% off now, or you can grab the whole collection for 33% off.
As always, I’ve got a freebie for you to download, a cluster frame I made using Laddie and Lassie. Enjoy!

Last week I showed you some great “all the time” bargains by BooLand Designs. Her One Page Wonders are a real steal at $1.97 all the time.  This week I have great step-by-step tutorial by Mary John using one of those One Page Wonders to make a quick and easy double page for a photo book.  I have to tell you that Mary John is a master at photo books.  She recently completed a 121 page book.  It is amazing!  I have wanted to do this for a very long time but it seems such a daunting task.  The thing is, once I saw it I wanted to really go for it.

Mary John makes it look and sound so simple.  You know what happened right?  I went groveling again for a tutorial and…… not only did she do the tut but she graciously offered up one of her own templates.  The girl is amazing!  Check out these photos and then download the template and let me share with you what she shared with me.

For this tutorial Mary John used Boo’s One Page Wonder #20.  It won’t be in the store until next week but you can have a sneak peek and you can always come back and do the step by step.
You’ll need the Double Page Template.  It’s free and it’s fabulous!  Get it right here.
Here is the final page.  Gorgeous … yes?

Fire up Photoshop or your preferred scrapping software.  Open your double page template.
Remove the layer “Delete” so you’ll only have 3 layers in your layer palette.
Select the Background layer.

Open bld_onepagewonders_#20_paper (2) and drag this all the way to the right.
Duplicate this layer )CTRL + J) and turn it horizontal.  Drag it all the way to the left and merge the two layers.
Activate the layer “Small Picture”.  Open your photo and clip it to this layer. Add a soft shadow to your photo.  It’s a good idea to add your shadows to each layer as you go so I won’t repeat that after each step but don’t skip it.

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (19)”
Resize this to about 2100 pixels width
Place this on top of the “Small Picture”

Make sure it fits snug around your photo and add your drop shadow.

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (11)”
Turn it horizontal and then stand it up straight.
Resize this to about 1500 pixels width
And drag it to the right upper side of the “Small Photo”

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (12)”
Turn it vertical and drag so it to the lower right corner of “Small Picture”
Resize it to about 1144 pixels wide

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (2)”
Turn it a little more then 90 degrees to the right
Resize it to about 1350 pixels width
Now place this one on top of the 2 elements you already have placed
Push it up high to give some dimension.

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (3)”
Turn it 180 degrees to the left
Resize it to about 2040 pixels width
Place this one across the bottom of your picture

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (16)”
Resize it to about 900 pixels width
Place this one in the middle of your lovely cluster
Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (5)”
Resize it to about 760 pixels width
Place this one at the bottom of “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (16)”

So this was the right side of the “Double Page”
Let’s move over to the left page
Activate the layer “Large Picture”
Now replace the “White Area” with your picture

Go to the layer below your “Layer Palette”

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (18)”
Turn it a little more than 90 degrees to the right
Resize is to about 1980 pixels width

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (4)”
Resize it to about 2130 pixels width
And place it on top of the bow, you only see the flowers

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (9)”
Turn it a little more then 190 degrees to the right
Resize it to about 1355 pixels width
And place it on top of the flowers

Now activate your layer “Large Photo” in your layer palette
Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (16)”
Resize it to about 635 pixels width
Place this on the of the cluster and just a little on your picture

Open “bld_onepagewonders_#20_element (21)”
Resize it to about 730 pixels width
Place this on the right of the “Large Photo”

Merge, save, and you’re ready to print.  But wait!  You can turn this template 45 degrees and do a whole new page.  You’ll have that album ready to print in no time.

I love Mary John’s tutorials.  I LOVE that tomorrow is the official “Love” day,  and I love that there is a “sweet” sale going on right now at the Studio.  It’s the perfect opportunity to get something special for yourself.  If you like this page, you’ll want to check out the new Bundled One Page Wonder Sets.  Each set includes 5 One Page Wonders and a FREE quick page and cluster.  Sa Weeet!

Happy Heart Day!

WMW – One Page Wonders – Scrap an album in a flash!

by Rebecca 6 February 2013

Last week was a terrible week for me.  My computer fizzled out just before the big Flash Sales and I was in a panic.  Not only was I scheduled to help a few people with their sales but I had big plans to grab some great deals myself.  I did grab a few goodies but [...]

Love is in the Air, plus a freebie!

Love is finding your stocking filled with the things you love and knowing that the person who filled it knows you like nobody else in the world. My husband and I are pretty good at choosing gifts for each other. We never do the typical department store Christmas, but rather focus on unique and personal items. [...]

Jack Frost and Friends, plus a freebie!

About a month ago, my husband Andy and I went up to Mt. Hood, Oregon to play in the snow. We took our dog, Sophie, who had absolutely froliced the first time we took her to the snow, so we were pretty certain she’d have a blast this time too. She did, but in all [...]

So I have this great idea for a Christmas card. Don’t worry, I do know that today is Christmas Eve. Not only have I not sent out our Christmas cards yet, I haven’t even made a Christmas card yet, nor have I taken the photo that is supposed to go on the Christmas card. Oh I’ve been [...]

Busted, plus a freebie!

Thumbnail image for Busted, plus a freebie!

One day not so long ago, I was sitting at my computer in the office typing away when my dog Sophie came up to me and rested her nose on my leg. It left a wet mark on my pants. I was surprised and thought she might be thirsty. I turned to get up out of [...]

Hay Day, plus a freebie!

Have you ever seen those artists that dress up and pose as statues, you know, at amusement parks and such? I know some people think they’re funny, but they’re not my thing. I don’t like being spooked, and the pretending feels awkward to me. I will admit, though, there is one pretend statue that never seemed to [...]

Until They All Come Home on SALE, plus a freebie

by Jenn 25 June 2012
Thumbnail image for Until They All Come Home on SALE, plus a freebie

With the 4th of July just around the corner, I’ve been thinking lately about the things that we celebrate and the reasons we celebrate them. It is so easy, really, to lose sight of those reasons when a holiday like the 4th of July means a day off of work (a big deal for me!), an opportunity [...]
