View Full Version : July 2012 - Surprise Me! -Border Challenge
07-01-2012, 04:58 PM
Sometimes when I create a layout, I want the photograph to be the only thing on the page, except perhaps for a date and/or very little text. Yet at the same time, I want some added interest. I have found that borders really come in handy when I find myself in this spot!
Last month we did a Border Challenge! I was absolutely over-the-moon with excitement to see how many of you participated and what amazing variety we saw! I'm going to take a risk and repeat the challenge again this month... with a slight twist......
My challenge to you this month is to create a layout where you use one photograph to tell your story...and to create a border to coordinate with your page. You may use any kit you like, and you may also use templates if you desire.
The twist? This month there will be a few requirements:
1. Use 3 different papers... somehow.. anyway.
2. One element that you choose to use in your border must be duplicated at least 3 times in your border design.
3. You must use stitching somewhere on your border.
4. You must use one piece of greenery.
That's it for this month. Easy, peasy, right?
Please post your layout HERE (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1344-surprise-me-21-challenge.html) in the Surprise Me! Challenge Gallery by the last day of July. Then come back and post your layout here in this thread so we can see, with a quick glance, the amazing work you have done!
What do you earn by participating? Well, theStudio offers a 10% discount on ALL of your purchases for the following month. So, if you participate this month and get a layout posted (AND post a link here in this forum), you will receive 10% off of every purchase made next month! No coupons are required. The discount will automatically be applied to your purchase. How easy is that? And YES, this is on top of any sales prices too.
One other thing....if you are interested in seeing the Border Challenge as a regular monthly challenge, would you make a note of that in your post?.. yes, or no.. either way, I'd like to know. Thank you so much!
I am getting ready to leave for vacation early in the morning, and I haven't had a chance to complete my contribution. If I get my packing done, I'll be back and get it up before we leave at o-dark-thirty in the morning. ;) If not, then I'll see you here when we get home!
I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I am in for this challenge. I used Snickerdoodle Designs - Flower Lane (love this kit).

I am up for this one, i would be interested in a border challenge each month with something specific to do for it
like the sound of using stitching will see what I can come up with- is it okay if I use things from more than one kit, the one i want to use doesnt have stitching in it

Hi there! I am still on vacation, but the hotel we are in today has great Internet so I just had to jump on here to see what you all have done!
Love your gorgeous flower photo, Tonisha. You did a marvelous job of matching the photo colors with your border colors!
The double-border, Cyndi, is unique and a great idea! Love it!
Jody, your clustering is amazing, as always, and I love the background treatment as well!
And, Claire, it is OK to use multiple kits!
Thank you all for participating!

I forgot to say .. I think a border challenge each month would be a great idea.. I guess it would eventually run out of ways to work. But could be great for a fair amount of time.
07-09-2012, 12:52 PM
this is what I came up with
07-09-2012, 02:13 PM
Thanks so much for the challenge! I love the idea of having a border challenge every month, a good way to learn and try new things! Here's my layout
07-10-2012, 08:01 AM
Claire and Patty - thank you for joining in and for your interest in having this challenge every month. I love the sea photo you used, Clair, and the beautiful border with all of the sea elements. Patty, I really like the 2 papers you have stitched together, and the flower/ribbon cluster is so feminine!
As Jody said, perhaps after a while it will play itself out, but for now, I think it is really fun to see all of the different border designs.

Thought I had this posted here last night. Think I did a preview of the post and forgot to save it! Here it is:
My darling great-grand helping her grandmom load the dishwasher. :DD
I cut the red paper triangles and the gold swirl shapes. And made my own stitching.
Yes, I do like the Border Challenge - would love to see it continue for awhile.

I like the border challenge, it definitely makes me think out of my little comfort zone.
Here's mine, I used the fairies for my element, but I didn't like the look off all one color . . .

Here is my entry. I scrapped my niece Sarah and my great niece Abagail. I used the kit Our Life in a Year-May by Adriana's Kitchen.

I love the variety of design and the different visions you have each had. The photos you have chosen to use are great too! I am off to the gallery to get a closer look! Thank you for joining in this challenge!

This is darling! I recognized Christine's new kit immediately! Super cute scene you created in your border! Love that you made it horizontal, under the photo! Great contribution!

I really love this border challenge and would like to see it as a regular monthly challenge. Thank you so much for hosting it.
I have made a layout:
I used the border in the kit to make a frame as the frame included in the kit was a little heavy.
Whoops, just noticed - I didn't add stitching or greenery. I'll correct it and add a new layout.
07-23-2012, 06:43 AM
Here is my revised layout including the greenery and stitching.
07-23-2012, 02:30 PM
Great challenge, I love doing the bordering and would like to see it continued, however you can. Thanks! Here's my layout:

What wonderful additions to this challenge! Loved seeing your 2nd page, Jan! Cathy, love how the text is swirly, and how the red really adds a color pop! Karen, thank you for using UTACH for this adorable LO. LOVE the nails! Cyndi - what a neat way to get your "border" requirement completed. Very unique and I love it! Twizzle - super cute LO and love your "recovery" with the stitches and where you placed the greenery! Dona, beautiful layout. Love the rustic vintage feel for this particular photo. Beautiful border and perfect for the layout. Thanks to all for your participation and your comments about wanting to see this challenge continue. Done. :)

hello everybody, just in time !
it was really funny to do that layout :)
I think it is interesting for me to work on those borders for I'm not use to and I saw beautifull ones ! Please go on :) I prefer a monthly challenge (15 days is too short for me...)
this was made with the kit Sea Time by Elodesign
the third paper is under the boat :)
07-31-2012, 04:22 AM
Ooops! I goofed up the challenge. I remembered we were supposed to use one photo and make a border to go along with the picture. I totally forgot about the instruction that said to make the layout consist of one big picture and a border. Sorry, I hope you will accept my layout anyway. I did only use 1 photo ,but I played around with the one photo.
*I prefer a monthly challenge ,as 15 days is too soon for me. Instead of just doing a borders challenge every month, how about making this a technique challenge and have a new technique each month, so it's not like a recipe challenge. Would it be more fun to try or learn a new technique each month, then do another recipe challenge. I don't really like redipe challenges, because they mess up my creative process some how. Here's some great technique challenges for the next 12 months..
Serendipity/Weaving paper/quilting layout/ric rac borders/border masks/using paint brushes/paper w/deco edges/
using paper overlays to make a new paper/ cut up paper overlay to make background for an element cluster/ clustering/ blending phtos into background/color blocking/ making word art

I've been away for several days - camping with our grandkids! I am super excited to come home and see more layouts here!
Welcome, Vanessa! So glad you stopped in, and we will look forward to seeing you here next month!
Makeeyesup, Love your border! Very unique, and I love how you tucked your photo into the vines.
NathL, You did a beautiful job on your border! It is very unique, with the wave cut-out. I would never have guessed this is not your comfort zone! Beautiful clustering too! All Challenges do run a month, so you have plenty of time. Just check in the first of the month. Most challenges are set up on the 1st, but sometimes we might need an extra day or two.
Beautiful LO and border, CM Silly. Yes, my original idea was to spotlight one photo with a simple border, but creativity cannot be limited. Many of the participants have enjoyed making a layout (rather than using one photo only), just like you did here, and that is okay! Thanks for your ideas. They fall in line, somewhat, with what is planned for next month, so be sure to check back.
Thank you to EVERYONE who participated! I just love seeing how we each see things from a different perspective, and how creative and unique we all are!
Thank you also for wanting to see the Border Challenge continue. I’ve added a twist to next month’s challenge, so please be sure to check in!
Since this is a “Surprise Me” Challenge, please check your PM box within the next day or two for a special surprise from me!

R we starting a new thread for the Month of August?
08-01-2012, 03:27 PM
HA!! You are so sweet to be so lenient with us, Karen. I totally missed the "use 1 photo" also. Or maybe I saw it and then instantly forgot it???? Got carried away with doing some of our month long vacation photos and did two border layouts with 2 photos on each one! I even went looking for MORE photos for that second page. LOL I'm looking forward to doing more border layouts now though! Especially after seeing all the creative ones from this month.
08-04-2012, 06:45 PM
the challenge is closed, but I just want to show you a layout I made with a border :)
thanks to you all for inspiration :))
