Hello ALL!

Welcome, welcome, welcome! I am on-the-edge-of-my-seat excited to see what everyone is bringing to this competition. September has always been my favorite part of the year, fall, back-to-school, my birthday, theStudio’s birthday and the annual Next Designer Competition here at theStudio.

A quick reminder, everyone is welcome. The door does not close until Round 1 submissions are in: September 5, 2012 at midnight (est). This is elimination style, exact numbers to be eliminated will be posted after Round 1 submissions are in.

My only question...

Are we allowed to use any greenery or no?

NancyP
09-01-2012, 07:40 AM
OK, Mandak, here are a few questions
What does this mean: "You must use ZIP files only. Do not use RAR" I know what ZIP is but what is RAR?
My dear friend, Snickerdoodle, explaned Vector to me, but still not grasping it. What is a photo-editing Vector program?
What does 72dpi mean?

Toiny
09-01-2012, 07:45 AM
You may not use greenery that is green. You may certainly recolor greenery to match the palette. I deliberately left out the color green to challenge you :XX

My only question...

i totally love the moon...woohoo, great colors..can't wait to start...

kimberkatt
09-01-2012, 07:54 AM
Nancy, to answer a few ??

RAR - there is another zipping program out there called winRAR, it uses the extension .rar , if you don't own this program, you cannot unzip .rar files. ZIP files are universal and everyone can access, hence the reason we want ZIP ;) make sense?

Adobe Illustrator is an example of a Vector Program, I can't really explain what a vector is, I know how to use them and what programs to use with them, but I'm unsure of the exact definition, so maybe someone can explain that a little better :DD

72dpi - this is the image resolution. 72 dots per inch is the standard web resolution for images, where as 300 dots per inch is the standard for print quality images. Most digital kits are designed at 300dpi for optimal printing, however, previews have to be resized down to 72dpi for posting on the web, ie our gallery... ;)

Vector=a mathematical equation. meaning it can change size with no loss of quality or pixelating. has another more specific definition but i just woke up LOL

Jacque

great challenge and think i'm gonna go ahead a play but need a couple clarifications as everyone does things differently.

1. patterned paper-does this mean it MUST pe repetitive patterns or anything that is NOT a solid? and solids...do they need to be just a cardstock type paper or something with a light overlay ok?

2. CU itmes. it says credit as needed by TOU. if the TOU says no credit required do we need to credit it anyway or put CU's used or something?

3. i'm sure we can put these on our blog but guessing we should link it to the Sudio Gallery where the links are located?

Toiny
09-01-2012, 08:59 AM
Hi Jacque! Great to see you again. Thanks for the vector answer. That's my understanding as well, but I don't think my definition would have been as clear & easy.

As for your questions:

1. patterned paper-does this mean it MUST pe repetitive patterns or anything that is NOT a solid? and solids...do they need to be just a cardstock type paper or something with a light overlay ok?
answer: I would love to see repetitive patterns and how you work with them. However, I mean anything that is NOT a solid.

2. CU itmes. it says credit as needed by TOU. if the TOU says no credit required do we need to credit it anyway or put CU's used or something?
answer: Yes. Regardless of the CU items TOU, you must credit all items used in this mini.

3. i'm sure we can put these on our blog but guessing we should link it to the Sudio Gallery where the links are located?
answer: Yes. You may blog away. However, please post the download links only on our gallery... at least during all of Round 1 (until September 9).

Thanks for being on top of the question answering, Toiny!

Glitter in the colors of the swatch is okay for use on elements, right? I have my mini all sketched out but don't want to start until I am sure.

An other vector program is Corel Draw. A vector is a path, stroke, line or point. You create shapes, curves, and lines with geometric formulas such as bezier curves. Think of it as a graph with one side called x and one y. Point A is two squares up and one over. Point B is five squares up and six over. Line A-B is from point A to point B. An enclosed space can be filled in with color. These programs, like Corel Draw, do the formulas for you. The things you make for them can be enlarged as much as you wish without any problem because they do not use pixels like a raster program. A couple of raster programs are Paint Shop Pro or PS or PSE. Vector programs have a somewhat high learning curve but are fun if you get to know them. Hope this helps.

You are welcome. For every one of you that asks a questions, there's at least 10 more waiting for the answer. So please! Ask away.

Glitter in the colors of the swatch is okay for use on elements, right?
answer: Yes. In fact, I love glitter :XX

Love the theme and colours. I'm a bit confused about the papers too though. I do understand the pattern papers, but solid? Translation gives me: sterk, robuust, ferm, so that doesn't really help me.
I think solids papers can be embossed, but what about papers like this?

http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/ren1000/feli_p_pp07a.jpg
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/ren1000/mzimm_eternity_paper4a.jpg
http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu235/ren1000/mzimm_eternity_paper2aa.jpg

I never seem to know what these are called. I do not see a real pattern, but they are not solid, like in one colour, they are just beautiful right?
Can you please help me out here?

kimberkatt
09-01-2012, 09:23 AM
The bottom two I would consider Textures - that top paper I would consider a pattern, even though the pattern is light, it's still patterned, to me anyway.... :DD I wouldn't classify any of them as Solids, though....

Toiny
09-01-2012, 09:38 AM
Solid = eenkleurige

Of course, not completely one color. The trick is to get variation from texture without losing the consistency in color to still match the palette.

The papers you've listed are patterned.

My dear friend, Snickerdoodle, explaned Vector to me, but still not grasping it. What is a photo-editing Vector program?
What does 72dpi mean?

RAR is just another compression scheme ... several programs are available to zip/unzip them

Bipmap graphics is drawn using dots
Vector graphics is drawn using lines and angles
vector graphics expands and contracts cleaner

dpi = dots per inch: 300 is good for printing/ 72 is for web
in PS and CS, you can change it under image size.

Nancy, in your pse program -
when you use the type tool or the custom shape tool, those are examples of vector.
Here is a comparison of vector vs non vector using the Typing tool.
http://i386.photobucket.com/albums/oo303/msbrad_photos/testing-vector.jpg
Play with some to see the difference.
When a designer is creating an element, its best to keep the vector and not simplify the element.
If the edges get soft...and fuzzy, not so good.

Super round one palette and I took some good blue moon shots last night!!!

I do apologize, I feel like I'm repeating a question but I didn't quite understand the wording of the answer.

My understanding of a solid paper is one color with no texture or anything else, like a one colored piece of red cardstock for instance. Is that correct? Or is can it be embossed paper? or can it have a "black" overlay?

I'm so sorry. It seems like the term should be so simple and it was for me until answers were given and then it was all muddy. :/

Thank you.

Toiny
09-01-2012, 03:38 PM
No need to apologize! A solid is all one color, though there can be some additional color in it, however, it should have texture. Whether the texture is added by overlay, or brushes, or both is up to you. It is okay to have some edging as well.

Toiny, thank you. I think that makes it about clear as mud. :D So a solid isn't really a one color at all. So to clarify a solid might be a cloud rendered blue/dk blue but not a blue and green? A blue and green would be a patterned paper? Or is it only a patterned paper that has a repeating pattern?

A background with stars or planets would be a patterned paper? .

Thanks again for the patience. :D

I think a solid can have multiple colors, especially if you use gradients, so a blue fading to green would be classified as a solid because there is no obvious pattern (like polka dots), but a nice papery texture, like cardstock or construction paper - I'm gonna go pull some examples from my stash, I do much better with visual than written! :DD I believe I will make a separate post about it, so that other's with the same questions/concerns will be able to find it easier ;) Give me a bit.... and, shhhh... don't tell the Scavenger Hunt People that I'm helping here instead of setting up their game! 0:) ;) :DD

katlen124

I can't believe that "solid" is the most questioned component here, but I have one paper I put in the solid category that is 2 colors that fade into each other - everything else is plain, just some texture and grunged edges.

No need to apologize! A solid is all one color, though there can be some additional color in it, however, it should have texture. Whether the texture is added by overlay, or brushes, or both is up to you. It is okay to have some edging as well.

Hey Nancy, there might be a comment on this already but real quick I was going to say that you do want your papers and elements that people will download to be 300 dpi. The 72 is for your preview before you upload it. Someone here can tell you how to change the resolution. If no one has by the time you are ready to upload, you can pm me. I have PS but have used PSE too. It is basically the same if I remember correctly. :))

Katlen, thanks so much!!! Didn't know about the 72dpi. I already made a couple solids and saved them at 300. But I also saved the PSDs. I only have PSE 8 to work with. Since I am never going into professional designing, I won't spend the money on PS.

I see 2 and maybe another as solid. One contest I was in had a third category. I forgot what they called it (themed?) Photo papers, the flowered, textured wall and seascape from above are examples of what would fit into this category. Not repeating patterns, but not solid.

The possibilities are endless!

Guys, as long as you think you have 2 solids & 3 patterns, in your style of solids. It is acceptable. I need to see how your style and talent shines within the parameters given. I want to see how you stand out from the crowd when you are working with the same set of guidelines as all your competitors.

Don't overthink it.

answer: Yes the theme must be Moonrise.

One of the things I'm looking for is how well you create within the guidelines. This is something a designer must frequently do when working on a collab. Whether it is for the monthly store mega, or with a group of fellow designers.

So, the theme has to be Moonrise? We just can't create something in those color's?

Susanne79

No need to apologize! A solid is all one color, though there can be some additional color in it, however, it should have texture. Whether the texture is added by overlay, or brushes, or both is up to you. It is okay to have some edging as well.

So my definition of a solid as also being a gradient is wrong?

Toiny
09-02-2012, 06:50 AM
No it's not. A solid can have variations of color in it.

Again, I truly think you need to apply this to you & the way you design. Follow the guidelines, of course, but also let your natural creativity shine.

I have finished up the minimum. I'm going to let to brew for a while while I work on other things I have neglected today
Usually in contests I like to make a bit more and pick the best .... but PS is acting weird. It won't let me save as png unless I go through save for web. I also cannot open png files (I could first thing this morning, but after a re-boot everything is screwy ... looks like a re-install for me.
Hi, Katlen, and everyone! I saw this thread and had to read! LOL I think I might be able to help.

If your PS won't let you save a .png normally, check the Mode. You can find it by going to 'Image'>'Mode'. It should show the mode as 'RGB'. If it is on 'Indexed' or anything else, just change it to 'RGB. You should be able to save it the way you usually do.

If you used an 'indexed', or other mode, item to make some part of what you are saving, this happens. It's an easy fix!

I'm hoping to learn a few things, myself! I've always enjoyed seeing what everyone does!

Toiny...glad to be back and going to try and finish both of these this time :) love this challenge and thanks for your answers. ALL of them. i do subtle repetitivie patterns but they are not part of my sytle (in any style i do) guess cuz i never use them. think they r too busy...except for dots, circles, stripes etc. so saying to use our own thoughts is great. i think may have gotten so confused or unsure (like me) as some contests if u do not follow the rules to the T u get eliminated. so nice to know there is some room for US in that :)

kimberly...OMG thanku thanku thanku hon. i am such a visual person u made it easier for me and let me know that MY vision was correct for ME and MY style.

so i think last question. i know previews r important to these challenges. is it ok to ask some of my designers for critiques on my previews (as i am preview challenged LOL) or is that unethical???? or just flat against the rules??? want to make sure before i do. (not that i have started with this being a 4 day holiday weekend and i'm painting my house finally. YAY!!! :) thanks again

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! That helps so much. Like Jacquie said, none of us want to get eliminated for having the wrong definition of something. :p Plus, my idea of solid is one single color paper with no overlay or anything; BORING. LOL

And WOW There a few really beautiful kits up already. WTG Gang!

answer: You may absolutely get input on your preview before posting. I think it's smart to get feedback before your final submission. I do the same thing with many of my previews. A second set, or third, or fourth, of eyes can be very helpful.

Now, having someone create the preview for you would be unethical.

Not sure what Toiny will say, but I used staples in my kit, I just edited their color so that they are tinted with a color from the swatch. I would imagine she was talking about not adding straight silver, gold, copper, bronze, etc...

I think you need to judge yourself if it is part of the stamped element or not. Quite often you will have strays if you've used a style or an action that has that look or feel. When I create an element and the stroked I've applied to check for them dominates the stray so you really can't see it, I erase it, just to be on the safe side. That's just how I do it.

I am head of quality control, and when I check a kit for strays, I always allow for some on things like stamps and masks, it's a natural thing on shabby elements like that but if it's a stamp of say a shabby butterfly and then there are strays far away from the featured element, all on their own, then I would classify them as strays.
hope that helps some hun

If it were on your blog where there are no requirements to download it then that would be fine but I guess since it's not a public vote then offering a few freebies isn't going to effect the vote outcome, so go ahead.

I saw this thread yesterday evening and have been thinking about it whole day at work. I toke some pictures this evening to distract and play along.

But I have 2 questions:

1. "You may add black & white if needed, no metals."
What do you mean with metals? Can I extract f.e. a silver jewelry element?

2. A solid paper: is it okay when it has a pattern visible, but still in the color of the paper?

3. We can add white and black? So that means that f.e. a white cloud is allowed?

Perhaps these are stupid questions, but I'm a newbie. :((

Toiny
09-03-2012, 01:17 PM
There are no stupid questions! Please always feel free to ask & ask some more.

answer: I mean metal styles or complete, all metal elements

answer: Yes. A tone-on-tone pattern qualifies a paper as a solid

answer: Not exactly. Some black & white used as accent is allowed, ie as borders or stickers or the edges of a doodle. However, primarily black (unless it is the purple black in the palette) or primarily white elements are not allowed.

YIKES!!!! I'm sure hoping what I've done still follows the "rules" ... to me, being a color geek (actually, I'm also a computer geek ... please don't hold it against me), a solid is a hue (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hue). Depending upon the software you are using, if you bring up your "color wheel", and set the color space to HSB (Hue Saturation Black), the solid would be based on the Hue. For example, the Hue of first color in the palette for this stage of the challenge is 189 degrees. If I adjust the Saturation or even the Black level, I do get a wide range of colors, but as long as my "Hue" remains at 189 degrees (or at least VERY close to it), it's a solid.

A non-solid would be something that contains colors that deviate from the primary Hue. An easy way to approach this would be to use a pattern with two very different "Hues." Using the above example, my main color is a Hue of 189 degrees ... if I overlay this with a pattern using swatch #7 of the palette (with a Hue of 278 degrees), this would be a non-solid.

I guess what I'm trying to say (or clarify in my attempt to not be TOO geeky), is that a solid is based on a color HUE ... and it's still a solid despite any deviation in the Saturation and Percentage of Black in that Hue. A non-solid is when you actually use two or more colors ... again, based on the Hue. However, in my opinion, the "Hue" really needs to change dramatically (by at least 10 degrees or more).

Oh Lordy, I really did try to make this as non-geeky as possible and I have a feeling I have failed ... but I'm a visual person and have a hard time understanding things without pictures. I will try to fix this by trying to explain this visually on my blog and will post a link.

0:) ;) :DD

@jilbert - you are truly a computer geek, I love it! Yes, that is the technical definition of solid. However, we are going by the digital scrapbooking definition of solid, meaning a primarly solid digital paper. Not just a color definition, but a product definition.

HTH's!

answer: I see you are done, and I also see I neglected to add "exactly" in with the elements. It does say exactly 5 papers, and the intent was for exactly 12 elements.

And is the amount of the elements and papers restricted or can there be one or two more?

The tutorial is superb by the way!

I have mine pretty much done. Just keeping up my preview so I can look at it periodically and change something. It's stayed up for a couple of glances now. I still need to ZIP it and put it up on 4Shared. I like that someone put there's up on DropBox. That was a great idea.

Hello everyone! I just wrote a longer intro in the other section, but thought I'd wave hello in here as well. I decided after a long time of thinking about trying design to just bite the bullet and do it...so here I am. This was fun to make and it really stretched my brain. I broke out the never-used wacom and realized it was a bad idea to learn something in the midst of a challenge. I did make a few things on the tablet that helped in the making of the kit but mostly stuck to Illustrator/ps.

See ya around! 8)

As long as you used the color palette, you should be okay! Colors tend to shift a little lighter/darker depending on the blend modes you use, and that is perfectly okay ;)

My kit was inspired by an episode of "Go! Go! Diego" where they have to help baby sea turtles find their way to the sea because the moon isn't shining and they can't see. FIRST let me say thanks to those who have answered questions...be it mine or someone elses... those who have been so supportive and to all those who do this every year MWAH!

SECOND: i am throwing a temper tantrum now and it started this morning!!! i was so excited about competing this year. unfortunately i lost the first 3 1/2 days due to the holiday (and using it to paint my house) so that left last night which i got started and today. but today out of the blue we decided to have lightening storms all day until about 30 mins ago (i always give time to make sure its over before turning puter back on) so there is no way i can finish a kit in time :( :( really bummed...but i am in the LO challenge so i didn't lose everything. got it uploaded JUST before storm started. ahhhhhhhhhhh

great job everyone your kits r so beautiful and the good part is that the competition was tough :)

Wow - I only got about halfway thru looking at all the entries (time for bed). All of the contestants should be very proud of their creations. So much talent & a terrific place to showplace it!!! Good luck to all. <3

And that's it for Round 1! This thread will be closed for new posts but I will put up a Chat thread until Round 1 results are posted on September 8th.

Good luck to all of you. Our job is going to be very, very difficult.
