View Full Version : NDC 2012: Round 3 Challenge

Toiny

Your Round 3 Challenge is to create a kit using another photo by Captain Kimo (http://captainkimo.com/juno-pier-under-the-moon-light/) as your inspiration. I have already picked a palette & photo for you. You must use this palette.

However, this palette is very monochromatic. It needs a little splash of color. Each of you may pick one additional color (and it's lighter & darker variations) to add to this palette.

Round 3 is traditionally the no CU round. This year we are mixing it up a little. This year is not just about the moon, but also about color! One huge challenge every designer faces is recoloring CU. For this round you may use only the CU Grab Bag (your prize from round 2), your own design skills, and any standard brushes that come with your software. You may not use plugins. You must include the tools listed in your description.

I would assume yes, it's not specifically listed as a requirement to name the kit Moonlight ;)

I do not envy you guys this round.... :O

We can make our own brushes right?

kimberkatt

yes, you can make anything as long as it's from scratch, 100% made by you or using the CU grabbag you were given - absolutely NO other CU resources can be used.

Mean I can go, take photos and extract from them, scan my skirt and use as texture as long as all is my own work, right?

Hi Jill. My understanding is that you can use standard brushes that came with your program, but you can't use CU brushes or brushes that someone else has created. I'm sure using your own photos/drawing to create your own original brushes would be classed as designing from scratch and that would be ok. ;)

Ok, I haven't been a Designer here long, so I'm going to try to answer as best I can ;)

My interpretation of the rules would be that if it is standard shapes, brushes or textures that came with your program, then that is ok. If you extract it yourself from your own photos, then that is ok too. Using something that someone else created (excluding the CU prize pack) is not allowed. ♥

jusmedigital

the way it was last year -- and I'm pretty sure it's the same this year (except you guys received the awesome CU grab bag) -- anything that came STANDARD with your design program, you can use. shapes, brushes, styles, etc. you may create your own CU items (including brushes, overlays, etc). just make sure you credit appropriately.

for example:
ribbon 1 - scanned & extracted by me
paper 3 - used shapes with photoshop CS5

it is my understanding that you may NOT use filter plug ins or additional software such as art rage, filter forge, etc.

good luck!

kimberkatt
09-15-2012, 10:29 AM
well wouldn't that fall under "your own design skills"?

Yes! That is correct! That is what this statement means, anything YOU personally took the time to create from scratch. If you started with someone else's template, NO! If you created your own template using shapes from your program, YES! If you used someone else's shapes, NO! If you created your own shapes using your program, YES! etc, etc... It has to all come from you, excluding the stuff you can make using the CU grabbag you were given ;)

Be creative! All the stuff in the grabbag has many more uses than what it was intended for, you just have to use a little imagination! :)) You can do it guys, I know it seems tough, but you all are stellar designers!! <3

Another stupid question from me...
I'm allowed to use one additional color. Let's say I chose red. Can I then use metals from the grab bag (for example the styles or hardware) and recolor to gold? Or would be gold another color and disqualify me?. So sorry for being a pita

Manu....I think they're going to put us in a rubber room after all of these question!

So if silver or gold are not your extra color, then there should not be any "metals" in your kit.....did that EVEN make sense??? Feel free to send me to that room I've set up for me and Manu.....the white jackets look comfy and we can hug ourselves all day!

That is correct! But, I believe there are enough neutral/brown/yellowish tones in the color palette for you to get a "gold" color ;) Obviously, silver/chrome is out! lol although, with that light bluish-green, you could probably come close! :))

But I believe you can achieve these colors/effects with the color palette! :))

Top row, 4th color in, that grey-blue/green color, that could potentially recolor your metal hardware to a "silver"-ish

2nd Row, last color, that could potentially be your "gold"

Then you have the option of adding another color ;) make sense?

I'm sure glad I'm on Pacific time so I could have most of my questions answered ... I was a little afraid I would have too many. However, reading this post did bring up another question. I have MULTIPLE graphics programs, including Art Rage and Filter Forge (which I use in standalone mode). I can understand not being able to use Filter Forge, but I don't understand why one couldn't use Art Rage. What if that were the only graphics program someone had (I actually know folks that only have Art Rage)? Are we only allowed to uses certain graphics applications???

Also, may we use more than one graphics program??? I have Adobe CS5 Web Pro which includes Illustrator and Photoshop Extended (along with Flash and Fireworks which I don't use) and I often use both to create things since I haven't really gotten the hang of using vectors in Photoshop. I also have Painter Essentials, Art Rage, and some iPad applications that I use depending upon the effect I'm trying to get.

I would assume ArtRage is okay, it's not a plug-in. But Filter Forge & similar "plug-in" types are out, even though they do offer the stand-alone feature, it's considered a Photoshop plug-in program.

I'm not exactly sure, but ArtRage would fall under the "vector" programs, correct? Anyone more familiar with ArtRage? It's a drawing program, right? Like Illustrator? Or Corel Draw?

he he, I FIRST do my nap and then come back to ask all my many questions - and now I find a lot of them answered yet. Great.Thank you Manu and Jill and the others! :-)

Thereīs still a question:
What kind of fonts are we allowed to use??
I donīt know which fonts came original from my notebook and which fonts I have downloaded...
There are fonts with flowers or patterns (like paisley), may we use them to create new patterns?

This round is great, but I hope my time is not to short to do it. :-(

ArtRage is a bitmap program. It's similar to Painter -- somewhere between Painter Essentials and full blown Painter.

Thanks for the quick response and, hopefully, for forgiving me for missing the part where one can use more than one graphics program.

As you can clearly see, I don't have all the answers! LOL! :l Jill #2, I'm totally with you on the Stickman thing! :))

I am not going to say yay or nay as far as ArtRage, we'll have to wait for Toiny on that one... and seeing as today is her birthday, she's probably pretty scarce right now, so it may have to wait until tomorrow, sorry about that!

Fonts would have to be standard fonts that come with your computer/software, sorry! No outside CU fonts of any kind. I know there are places you can find a list of standard Windows/Mac fonts, let me see if I can pull up a link for you guys ;)

I think just making a note that you used the standard brushes that came with your program for creating papers is all that is needed.... You don't have to say you used Natural Brush Size 28px from Adobe Photoshop CS4 in the left corner and middle 2/3 of paper #6, that would be a lot for you guys in the few short days you have to complete the challenge! ;) :DD

I just spent 8 hours trying to draw a paisley and though I came out pretty cool, it just doesn't fit my vision of what I want to make. I'm still not sure what my theme will be ... I've started playing around with the patterns in Illustrator to see what I can come up with ... I think I'll go have glass of wine ...

I think I'm going to go watch Scandal. It was an awesome premier series last fall and just started up again this past week! Have to figure something out to get busy first thing in the morning!

Like a list on notepad included in the download?

As far as the palette, must we use all of the colors or may we select the ones we want to use and then add our additional one color to that?

Toiny

ROFL! You guys crack me up! I took some notes & I'll try to answer the ones that are still left unanswered and/or need some clarification. Please bug me if it's still not clear:

answer: You may take photo's or scans and use those as extractions or textures. Be sure that the item you photograph or scan is allowed for commercial use.

answer: You may use a standalone program such as ArtRage. You may not use a plugin such as FilterForge. Yes, I know FilterForge can be used as a standalone, but it is primarily a plugin.

answer: You may use black or white as your additional, you may not use both as freebies.

answer: You may focus on only a few of the colors in the palette, you do not have to use them all.

answer: You must have your own additional color.

answer: You may use lighter & darker variations of the palette colors

Note: we will be looking very closely at the color integrity of your recolored items. I want to see you use the CU items. I want to see how well you can recolor and match it to the palette. Getting too creative here could wind up hurting you in the end.

I had an awesome birthday! Thank you all for the well wishes & the patience while I disappeared during those critical hours. And a very big thank you to my team for stepping up & answering your questions very well.

How much and how, do we have to specify what we have used and done?

Toiny
09-16-2012, 08:02 AM
For the CU Grab Bag, you just need to credit the Designer in your TOU (as you would with any kit you create). Only with the bits of the Grab Bag you actually used.

Do list the programs you used to create your entry (ie photoshop, illustrator, art rage) and list the items you created from scratch (ie textures scanned by me, flowers photographed & extracted by me, etc.)

Can we use filters within PS ie... wave, swirl, texturizer?

I have created CU items that are sold in my sold currently. Can I use them even if some may be created by a plugin?

Thanks for clarity.

I'm in a similar place so don't feel too bad, I've made 13 elements, no papers, so you are way ahead of me there. I am so not loving it and I'm thinking I may start over. I have changed my palette 3 times and I'm not happy with it still! I can't seem to come up with a palette to match my theme.

I think I will have to revisit it tomorrow. I'm afraid I may run out of time, I have company tomorrow and a doc appt. on Tues. and who knows what else will come up.

Frustrated but not giving up! :grrr:

I just spent the day cleaning. Well, picking up. I have a hard time doing the nitty gritty of cleaning. But I picked up the whole house and did everything except mop...because I don't like to mop.

Housework - what the heck is that? I just close my eyes when I come home from work, take the dog out and close my eyes again passing through and on the way to my office! Good thing I live by myself now, only I can see what needs doing!

Loving all that you guys have done up until now. It was a harder round and you're all shining!

I'm having a family get-together this weekend to celebrate daughter #2's birthday (I tried to convince her she wanted to delay her birthday for a week, but the mean thing refused). Needless to say, my house is not ready. Fortunately, everyone knows I'm doing a "contest" and that I'm not the best housekeeper. Luckily, there's only 3 of us and we're really not all that messy (at least where anyone can see it. I keep saying ... tomorrow, tomorrow ...

Ladies, I'm not very good at leaving comments in the gallery (it's a quirk of mine in any gallery) but I do want to say that the kits are really lovely. I can see a lot of thought and imagine has gone into them. I know the judging will be tough, so glad I'm not a judge. The best to each of you. :))

Hmmm I will ask the IT guy, it's possible in the store so maybe it's possible here as well. It probably won't happen today but your entry counts either way.

BTW-Toiny-I posted my kit under my old account name by accident so rxdawg97 = HoneyBee Digital (is there a way to combine my accounts into one without losing my previous posts-I'd prefer HoneyBee Digital)

Hi Ladys,
it is 5:45 a.m. in Berlin and I am really really tired now...
I worked the hole night to finish my kit - what a challenge :w

Now I wish to stay in my bed for the hole day:(( and after that I take a closer look for all your great entries.

And I see everyone's entry is in. Absolutely fantastic. Just WOW. You all created amazing entries this round and deserve a well-earned rest. I hope all of you are getting a nice, long sleep and maybe a massage, case of wine, chef-prepared dinner...

This round is officially closed. Good luck!
