View Full Version : Variety Challenge - August 2013

08-02-2013, 03:08 AM
I'm calling my challenge this month, Cut It Out Challenge.

By cutting out I mean for you to make cutouts in whatever shape you wish from the top or upper layers so we can see one or more of the underlying layers. I've made a little mini kit for you if you wish to use it, but that is entirely up to you. If you don't use it, please include in your layout some products from our Studio store.

Upload your image to the Variety Challenge Gallery HERE (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1542-variety-challenge.html) and then link back to this thread so we can all admire your work and leave you lots of love.

Post your pages by August 31st. Participate in one or more Studio challenge (any challenge, not just this one) and receive an extra 10% discount on ALL purchases (from the PU store only) for the following month. So, if you participate this month and get a layout posted (AND post a link here in this forum), you will receive 10% off every purchase made next month (after the 5th)! No coupons are required. The discount will automatically be applied to your purchase. Just make sure that the email address you used to sign-up in the forum is the same as the email you use in the store.

Download the mini kit HERE (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/blogfreebies/Robyn_AugustVarietyChallengeKit.zip).

Here's a page I did sometime ago that illustrates what I mean by cutting out the top layer or layers. You can see that I've cut out the papers to reveal the photos and also cut out circles from the striped paper to reveal the plain paper underneath. I have applied some quite heavy shadowing to highlight this cutout technique.

This lovely page from sparkysgirl (from the July Variety Challenge) is a perfect example of cutting out. Look how the cut out circle reveals two more papers underneath. I think it looks really very effective!

Hi Robyn, hi girls,

thanks for that wonderful variety, I love it to play with cutouts. This time I did two pages, because on the first one I used the cutouts on the papers and I donīt know if itīs visible enough for you:

But on the second I used shapes on the tag and on the photo, so you can see it better, canīt you?!?

Thank you everyone for playing along in the challenge. Off to the gallery to leave some love............

I've used the little mini that I made for the challenge. I quite like the idea of showing the underlying layers to give the impression of a frame. The photo was a B & W one and I've adjusted the colour balance so it has a more sepia tone and coordinates better with the colours in the kit.

Thank you ladies for more great contributions to this challenge.

08-12-2013, 06:05 AM
oh dear I've just finished my page and realised that I needed to use your gorgeous mini or have some stuff from the studio store but I've used neither so I guess I'll just have to DL your mini Robyn and start again :)

08-12-2013, 06:20 AM
Nah............don't worry about it Lesley!

08-12-2013, 07:20 PM
Very interesting challenge. I'm sure people found many ways to create their effects. Might be fun to share techniques or at least have Robyn share hers when the challenge is ended. Beautiful job on the pages before mine.

Here's mine, from our recent trip to Yellowstone National Park. It has some of the most amazing sites.

Pamela.........thanks for your lovely contribution to the challenge.

There really is no special technique with this. I've just cut holes out of the top paper layer to reveal the second paper/element layer underneath, and then if I have a third layer I cut the holes out of the second layer to reveal that third layer - and so on and so forth. I've put quite a deep shadowing on to highlight this. Does this help?

08-13-2013, 02:21 AM
hehe ;) I was hoping you'd say that ;)...I love this technique from back in the days when we first did it there :) in the middle of another one too with your gorgeous little mini :)so I'll pop that one in later on

Finally had some time to get a couple of challenges done. One explanation on this entry...I use Paint Shop Pro for my projects (can't seem to find time to learn Photoshop even though I do have it installed on my computer) so the cutout feature in PSP gives a completely different effect as you can see from the dragonfly photo. Not real crazy about it, but at least it is visible somewhat. lol.

The journal reads: "This golden dragonfly stayed on this flower like it was posing for the photo. I took this photo several ago and still amazed at how long he sat on this flower just like he was waiting"

Couldn't resist your beautiful kit. Thanks for the kit and also for the reminder to use cutouts. I had forgotten how they make layouts pop.

Sorry I took so long to get back. I was just talking about all the many options available in layer styles. Sometimes so many choices can be make it harder to pick...not really important

Been a very busy month with selling and closing on our 'old' house, DD#3 and family staying with us while they look for a house to buy, and mom in the hospital twice in the last week. Finally managed to get this page done.

I use circle cut-outs on my page.

I really enjoyed this challenge. I love the example layout with the circles and tried to recreate the frame under a layer. I really feel I've learnt something! Thank you Robyn :DD

I really enjoy doing these Challenges. Makes me try new things with the PSE software and hopefully I can repeat what I have done! I love the look of the cutouts. I used elements (Scenic Route) and papers (Hay Day) from Snickerdoodle Designs by Karen.

Here is my layout using different square cutouts.
