Thank you for popping into the August Surprise Me Border Challenge! This is the month of vacations and kids-home-from-school and less-time-to-scrap. So this month's challenge will be easy. It might take a little thought, but the construction of your page will probably go pretty quickly.

Here is your challenge:

1. Let your photo be the main focus of your page. It should cover at least 80% of the page.
2. Add a border using the following guidelines:

a. pull 2 main colors from your photograph (I've chosen blue and white.)
b. add one color that is NOT in your photograph (I've chosen red.)
c. add one element on your border that could easily have been extracted from your photo (I've utilized greenery, since there is so much greenery in the photo.)You make use other elements if you wish... but
d. keep it simple... remember, this should be an easy page!

Here are the rest of the rules:

* You may use any kit you wish.
* Post your layout in the Surprise Me Border Challenge Gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1344-surprise-me-21-challenge.html)
* Come back here and post your preview and a link to the Surprise Me Border Challenge Gallery in this thread. This makes it super simple for us to find your layouts in the gallery, and we thank you for taking this extra step!

What do you earn by participating? Well, theStudio offers a 10% discount on ALL of your purchases for the following month. So, if you participate this month and get a layout posted (AND post a link here in this forum), you will receive 10% off every purchase made next month! No coupons are required. The discount will automatically be applied to your purchase. How easy is that? And YES, this is on top of any sales prices too.

OH Karen, what a beautiful shot---and great border. Thank you for the inspiration and for the challenge.

08-03-2013, 12:22 AM
You really inspired me. My shot is something I tend to look at most days, but usually do not notice its beauty.... Thank you

Hope this is simple enough ... at least it was as simple as I could get ;-)

Sorry...... :( ....... I couldn't help but add more stuff.
Had the perfect picture with the perfect kit, but wanted to add the second perfect picture.
Thanks Karen for the great challenge.

This gave me the incentive to start scrapping some of our travel photos. All the info on the page.
Thanks! Rose

All of these, so far, are just awesome! Wonderful inspiration.

Oh, Miamm! You look at this most days? Wow! Yes, it is lovely! Your border really picked up the blues in the shadows. Lovely!

Simple was the idea, Jill, so this is perfect! Love the extra colors you pulled in… and the oil painterly photo treatment!

Sherry this is beautiful. With the trees on the right side, and the border on the left, I feel like I am walking thru an archway right into the photo. Love the rose/each color that you brought in here too.

LOL! What a little implish grin on your little guy, Barb. The photo is definitely worth the canvas space! Adorable layout!

Ahh.. Rose, what a beautiful shot… I haven’t been to the Painted Desert in years, so this is a reminder of how gorgeous it is. Love the border element choices you’ve made. I’m sure there are little flowers just growing wild on those plains.

Thank you, ladies, for your participation and inspiring layouts!

All of these layouts (6, so far) are right on the money!!! Did I mention also well done?

Loved this challenge and such a great idea for future pages. I darkened the tiles to match the sunflower, added the green leaves because of all the green leaves in the photo. Then added the beige and pink bird, birdhouse and journal paper for the color not in the photo. All elements from Summer Afternoon by Snickerdoodle.

Great challenge. Took this in Hawaii in October last year.

I have to give this challenge a try. I'll be back with a layout :)

These Black Eyed Susans are blooming in my yard - anyone who has ever had any knows that they spread like wildfire! My 2 main colors from the photo are yellow and green, I added some orange then used the green leaves in the border. TFL!!

This hot air balloon was flying over a LaCrosse match during Independence Day celebrations in 2010. I think it gives a different view of the word "Independence."

Great photo, GrannieEv! Great job in pulling out those photo colors!

Great job of recoloring to meet your needs, Judy! That's a gorgeous flower too! The kit you used is Granny Finch's Garden. I think you just had the name of your layout, Summer Afternoon, in mind when you typed your credits. Thanks for using this kit in a unique way! You did an awesome job.

Beautiful beach scene, dj_w. I love the color pop you added with the red/orange.

dax03.. these gorgeous flowers grow wild?? Oh, wow! I wonder if they would bloom in my area. They're so pretty, and I love the border you created. Great job.

kapoh, Well done! Great photo! Love the flow of your border. It's so perfect for your layout theme.

I LOVE seeing your beautiful BIG photos totally showcased!!!! Thank you for participating!

Here's mine for the challenge:
- ochre and salmon colors from the photo
- blue stitching which is a color not in the photo
- the greenery behind the flowers look like they could have come from the photo

My first attempt at a layout on the forum. I loved the simple look of this type of layout. Me and a very tall tree. It seems I have uploaded twice because I don't know what I am doing. Is there a page that explain the procedure?

Great job on your border, Patricia, and I love your photo! I hope you weren't as close to that little guy as it looks like you were!

Neat perspective on your photo, Vicki. Love the rich colors in your border.

Ahh... What a cute picture that is, lbettis. I haven't seen those birthday balloons before! I see the orange in your border that wasn't in the picture. Great job!

Awesome photo, Karen! Great capture , even thru the rain. Love the addition of the blue umbrella as your additional color.

Dona, it must have been hard to find a color that wasn't in this beautiful bird! Great job of picking one that goes beautifully with it. What a magnificant animal, don't you think?

What a neat photo, Pamela! Beautiful choice in the addition of the orange color. I love the curved border also, mimicking the curved road. Thank you for using The Artist in Me for your book. I am honored.

Hi Steph! Welcome to the Challenge. I'm so glad you came! I agree.. beautiful photo, and totally deserving of an entire page. I love the border you created, with the pointed edges mimicking mountains. Beautifully done!

What a gorgeous dog, Lella! And you have showcased her beautifully! Totally love that curved border and tag!

Thanks, Robyn, for helping Steph out! My husband and I have been out of town. I appreciate your constant vigilance and helpfulness!

Mine is a bit different, but, I hope it still qualifies?

This is also the first layout I have even attempted since the wee ones returned to school. I had fun! Thank you!

Great challenge! I pulled the orange and yellow from the goggles, added a green string for my color not in the photo and added a pair of goggles for my element.

08-25-2013, 01:00 PM
Beautiful, Cathy! Love the photo treatment for your page, and bringing the yellow into your border really was perfect! I also love your title and the date placement!

Welcome, Suruha! I'm glad you joined us. You've created a beautiful, artsy layout. Yes, it qualifies! The addition of the aqua, which is not in your photo, is perfect! Great job! I hope you join us again next month!

What a darling photo, Pam! And your border perfectly compliments it. Thanks for joining us!

kpmelly, What an awesome photo of your (?) dog. Looks like he had some weeds for lunch! LOL! I like your "L" shaped border, and the cluster is lovely.

Perfectly done, Nancy! Great addition of the green string! Such a cute picture too!

Colors chosen were the off white of the building and the gold of the awnings. Brought in some flags. Recolored your papers from Hay Day for my border.

When I think of my daughter Shari I think Pink Flowers and Roses and so incorporated them into the border!

08-29-2013, 11:06 PM
I used Designs By Brigit's "Magicland" butterfly element, a BooLand Design's "Secrets" paper (although I don't know you can even tell since I made it so dark), and an Aveziur's "Renew" paper.
I made the major border element about the same color as the trees. The green paper represents what you would expect the tree color to be, and that is the added color that is actually not in the photo. The butterfly is purple like some of the clouds and also represents the "magicalness" of the moment (is that word in Webster's???). I tried to match the text color to a bright spot in the clouds.

08-31-2013, 06:29 PM
Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel! Did you see the Christopher Reeves movie that was shot there? "Somewhere in Time." One of my favorites! Beautiful layout, Makeyesup

Adorable, mjnansen! Great job of picking out the colors, and WHAT a CUTIE!!!!

Perfect choice, angmagg55 What a beautiful photo as well.

Beautifully done, Andie. I like your addition of the green, and your reasoning behind that choice. Stunning photo too.

I've sure it's been a busy month for everyone, with back-to-school events and summer coming to a close. Thank you for coming to my Border Challenge. I hope to see you in September's challenge. In September I will actually GIVE you the border to work with! How easy will THAT be for you?? ;)
