View Full Version : Template Exchange Challenge

08-31-2008, 05:23 PM
Welcome to the SAS-y Birthday Bash
Template Exchange Challenge!!!
September 1st to 30th

Time to replenish that template supply just in time for some serious holiday gift giving scrapping!!!

It's pretty simple really, you submit a template to the challenge, either 12x12 or a brag book if you prefer...what I mean by template is a greyscale map which can then be used to quickly create a layout. Each different paper or element should be on it's own layer so that it can easily be swapped for an actual digital paper or element for quick scrapping.

Example of templates:

And at the end of the month you get all the templates submitted !!!:):):)
And as a bonus, you will receive a set of templates created by myself and Cathy Cher of Scrapsational Scraps soon after you've submitted your template.

This is what you get as a bonus...

Oops it's all bagged up, quess you will just have to send me a template to see what's in the bag!;)

Participation is easy.
1. Create your template and zip it and host it at 4shared or yousendit.
2. Send me the link, you can PM me or email it to digimom@digimomdesigns.com
3. Post a preview of your template in the SAS-y Birthday Bash Template Exchange Gallery (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=765), the general gallery here is perfect, and come back and post here letting us all know you've posted, linking us up to your template preview in the gallery so we can give you some love.

Then sit back and wait, at the end of the month, I'll gather up all the templates submitted and distribute them to everyone who participated. You may of course, submit more than one if you wish :)

It's that easy!!!! GO....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS. If you use an existing layout to create your template, which is a great easy way to do it, be sure to use only your own layouts as inspiration. And another thing to remember, the template does not have to be an exact copy of your layout, for instance, you cannot grey out an obvious designer created element, unless of course it's your own creation. You should just use a simple basic shape to show where the elements should be placed on the page. Remember a template is just a basic layout map of where to place things, people will be using the kits they have to fill it in with elements and papers of their choice.

Have fun!!!!:)

Does anyone have a tutorial for photoshop elements6 on how to make templates?? I never have made one & do not know how but would love to try this challenge.

08-31-2008, 08:12 PM
Oh man I really want to do this. Anyone know where I can learn to make templates ? I use PSP 9

08-31-2008, 08:28 PM
I would like to make one, but don't know how? Any help out there???? I use PSE.

09-01-2008, 05:31 AM
Do the templates have to be in layers? I use creating keepsakes and can make the basic template with it but can't really seperate the layers that well... is that ok?

09-01-2008, 07:08 AM
What a neat challenge. Now to see if I can figure out how to make a template.

09-01-2008, 07:12 AM
So glad to see some interest in this so fast!!!

Here is a tutorial (http://hk.youtube.com/watch?v=-9txdvRrEPs&feature=related), it's a video by Hummie, on making a template in PSE 6 using an existing layout which is a great way to do it when you are getting started.

For this challenge, the template should be a layered file for ease of use for everyone.

If I find anything else, still searching for good tutorials for PSP, I'll come share them.

09-01-2008, 09:37 AM
Ooh, I can't wait to do this!! I use CS3 - I'm pretty sure I know how to do it, but a tut would be great!

09-01-2008, 10:18 AM
Oh thank you for the tutorial reference. I have always wanted to know how to make templates!! This is so exciting

I have never made a template before, but I would like to try. Is there any limit, can you post more than one?

09-01-2008, 11:39 AM
I've never made a template before either. Thanks for the link to the tutorial. I use PSP8. It doesn't look like it would be too difficult. I may just have to give it a try too! Thanks. ;)

Is there anything we should know about making the origianl LO for the template? Like eliminating stray pixels or marching ants etc? Is it best to use solid color papers?
How do we check our LO so it is acceptable to make a template out of it?

09-01-2008, 12:20 PM
I have another question. How do we give credit to the original designer kit we used to make our LO that we want to make a template from? In the preview?

09-01-2008, 12:28 PM
I'm a little confused here. Are we talking about making template "Quick Pages" or are we talking about making templates of paper or different elements that people can use to make their own papers or elements?

09-01-2008, 12:43 PM
I'm definitely participating in this....sounds like alot of fun!

09-01-2008, 01:17 PM
This challenge is to make a template that can then be used for others to quickly create a layout by swapping out your placement of papers and elements with their own. So we're not making quickpages which just require a photo to be dropped in them, but the actual layout, usually done all in greyscale.

And to answer Joba2, templates usually just use basic shapes and solid colors, you are not using actual elements so you don't need to worry about stray pixels or anything like that. if using a LO to create a template, please use your own LO's, not other peoples LO's. That would not be ok.

And you can submit more than one template if you wish:)

09-01-2008, 02:44 PM
Here's my preview
Jobatemplate1 (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21054&limit=recent)

This was so much fun. I learned alot just by doing one.Thank you SAS

09-01-2008, 02:54 PM
Oh, I would never use someone else's LO to make a template. That would be piracy. I was thinking I had to credit the designer's element I did use to make my own LO & converted to a template. But if I understand correctedly from your previous post this is not necessary cause we are using the shape only not the actually element.Hope I got that right.

09-01-2008, 03:06 PM
Oops,I think I may have posted my preview in the wrong gallery. It wouldn't let me post in the sasy birthday gallery (said no photo's allowed)so I thought I found the sasy birthday template challenge gallery but it looks like it went into Jasjul's monthy template challenge. Where is the correct gallery to post our preview.Sorry , I have so many questions.

09-01-2008, 03:11 PM
hi all!! i ll join you when i ll learn how to ýmake templates but i need a tuto in, french ^^ so see you girls! ^^

09-01-2008, 03:52 PM
I am so excited about this exchange, I totally LOVE templates and can hardly wait to see what everyone makes to share. I might even make another one later, one that is a little fancier. I did make this one I would like to use and probably will pretty soon. Here is my link to the preview

09-01-2008, 04:00 PM
I see the general gallery does not work, I will get a gallery set up for this and let you know when it's ready, you can post to your own member gallery for now, that's fine too.

09-01-2008, 04:07 PM
Oh man I really want to do this. Anyone know where I can learn to make templates ? I use PSP 9

Using PSP9 to make the template is easy as pie and not near so fattening...LOL If you have ever used a template, just reverse the steps when you make yours, remembering to save it as .PSD when you are finished. YOu could offer it as a .pspimage and a .PNG if you wanted to, many of the tmeplate makes do offer all three formats.

1) make a new image, 12x12 inches at 300DPI.

2) I usually then flood fill that blank image with some shade of gray and name it background.

3) Then adding a new layer for the next thing I want to add to the template, making sure it is a different shade of gray. IT can be anything you want it to be, just remember to add a new layer and naming it each layer you make.

The key to making templates seems to be, use items you already use to make your layouts, shapes come in handy, you do have to make a new layer for each item other wise it gets harder when you are using it to add the papers and such you want to use. You could actually make a sketch on paper of what you would like to have your tempalte look like. You do not have to use the actual element someone would use, but using a shape to give an idea of the placement of an element.

SO that it is easier for folks to see where to highlight each layer, making it a different shade of gray helps. I use templates all the time, and some of the makes forget to make things clear, so with the one I made I tried to keep it simple, but anyone could add anything to it they wanted in the way of elements.

Hope this helped a little.

09-01-2008, 04:51 PM
Ok we have a gallery now!!! Template Gallery is here! (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=765)

09-01-2008, 05:09 PM
lol I have been saying I was going to make templates out of some of my pages. Thanks for the kick in the Rear! Now I will end up with more then just a few. :D

09-01-2008, 05:12 PM
Why don't people over Templates as .Tiff files? So you can see them in the folder when you search your computer.

09-01-2008, 05:35 PM
Thanks for the Tut Link!
There are so many cool tuts there!

09-01-2008, 07:06 PM
Awesome!!! I just learned how to make templates a few months ago and I've been making them like crazy from some of my LO's... well, the one's I didn't use someone else's templates on! hehehe... I will have to make a few more and post them here.... love this challenge! Wonder if this is going to be a monthly challenge/exchange from now on?!! *hint, hint* :p :D

09-01-2008, 08:47 PM
My second attempt at making a template

JobaTemplate2 (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21105&limit=recent)

I learned alot doing a second template.I had made two ribbon banners on my original LO but when I made a template out of them the shadows in the ribbon folds didn't show up & it didn't look right .So I deleted them from the template.
And I did have some stray pixels on my photo ribbon.I think they were drop shadow pixels even though I cleared all the shadows. I made that ribbon too & this may be why . I probably merged the drop shadow with the ribbon so I could move it around easier.I used marque tool to elemenate the stray shadow pixels. I do not know correct way to do this.

09-01-2008, 10:09 PM
Hmmm....Never done one before. This means I have to try at least one lol! Thanks for the push!

09-02-2008, 03:47 AM
mine is posted here (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21135)

09-02-2008, 06:36 AM
So far so good, looks awesome in the gallery already and it's only the end of day 1!!!! I've sent out posting bonuses to all who've submitted so far. :)

Joba: Yes, greying elements like ribbons and such does not turn out. Really it's easier and better to just use a basic line or shape for elements since you are really just creating a layout map for people to follow and they will be using the ribbons and elements from their kits to fill it in anyways.

09-02-2008, 07:26 AM
Sign me up for htis.. I will be working on a template... Kay

09-02-2008, 10:50 AM
Wow I am loving all the beautiful templates. I can't believe that most of you have never done one, you sure would not know that in the results. Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!! Off to the gallery

09-02-2008, 01:06 PM
I found another tutorial on how to make templates at mistycato( found the info in the chatter forums) & have to try it. It might be easier than the one I used.
I am starting to understand that I should replace ribbons etc with shapes.I'm really learning. I now understand that if I have a designers element on my original LO to replace it with a shape.I have looked through my LO's & alot are not condusive to making into a template--at least not with alot of fixing up.

09-02-2008, 02:24 PM
I am trying to decide if I should try my new tutorial on making a template or do some house work.I really should get some work done after spending most of yesterday looking for the hidden treasures & making my first two template Lo's. But.....
Maybe I can compromise.Make a template & for every hour on the computer get up & do 15 min housework. I read this housework trick in the general chatter forums. Maybe I'll give it a try today.

09-02-2008, 06:59 PM
Here is my first attempt (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21188&limit=recent) with a template.
Thank you Barbara for a really fun challenge.

09-02-2008, 08:48 PM
Here is the link to my 1st attempt (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21159). What a fun challenge!

09-02-2008, 11:01 PM
I love using templates and can't wait to enjoy the ones that everyone is making for this challenge. I hope you like my contribution.

I will try this one too!!

There are some fantastic templates in the gallery already!

09-03-2008, 11:03 AM
This is really a great challenge & learning experience.Thank you SAS.
By the way, I never did do any housework yesterday:D

09-03-2008, 11:35 AM
Just got back from the gallery (and leaving some luv) and already my fingers are itching to get hold of some of those templates. As a certified Template Addict, I am really loving everything I have seen, so folks keep them coming....

09-03-2008, 11:44 AM
You have ALL done such a great job on your templates. I am bound and determined to complete one today. It's fun and I've been working on it, but I'm not so sure I like anything I've come up with. (I'm definitely my own worst critic) :(

And don't feel bad Joba, you're not the only one not getting any housework done. I have to take advantage of my computer time while the boys are in school and I'm not getting much done in the way of cleaning either. If you won't tell, I won't tell!!!!

09-03-2008, 01:47 PM
My third template (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21239&limit=recent)

I have learned something each time I made a template. As the old saying goes-practice makes perfect. Not that my templates are perfect lolol(far from it) but it does get easier as you understand better what works & what doesn't,how to replace designer graphics with shapes ,what LO's work best etc.
Thank you SAS for this learning opportunity:)
Darlingina,I won't tell If you wont! but I really do have to get off computer today & get some work done:rolleyes:

09-03-2008, 01:51 PM
Oh by the way, that second tutorial I found on making templates wasn't better than the one we got referred to by Digimom. It actually was worse & didn't work.

09-03-2008, 03:14 PM
I gave it a try and made my first Template. Done mostly by trial and error. We'll just say that the Undo command in PSP is my bestest friend! That was fun and I may be well on my way to making many more. :D

09-03-2008, 05:01 PM
Okay, I have created two templates for the challenge. Hope it's okay that I created 8.5x11. I always scrap on this size since that's the largest size my printer can handle.

If you scrap on 12x12, you can still use these templates. Just select all the layers and drag all the layers to your 12x12 page, press Shift before letting go to center on page. Press Ctrl+T and resize to 9.5x12. You will have an extra 1.25 inches at the top and bottom on which to add more paper or elements.

I use this method all the time to convert 12x12 templates to 8.5x11. I resize them to 8.5x8.5, then drag to my 8.5x11 LO.

09-03-2008, 08:25 PM
Ok I finally did one. I am so proud of myself. LOL Of course now I am going to have to make more and use more layers of elements. I just wanted to get my feet wet first. :D

So far SO AWESOME ladies!!! This is going to be one awesome stash of templates and it's still the first week!!!

I've gotten back to everyone with posting bonuses so far, I think (let me know if I missed you, with the site running a bit slow I sometimes do other things while waiting for the page to load, and well...forget to come back, MommyBrain!!!!) Seems to be back up to decent speed this morning though, WOOHOO!

09-05-2008, 08:19 AM
LOL! Candee, love the siggy tag...wish I knew how to make them, they're so cute!

I can't wait until the end of the month to collect these templates! I love using templates as a base for my LO's! I gather my thoughts more quickly and they make scrapping a lot faster! Thank you so much to everyone who has contributed so far!! :D

09-05-2008, 12:11 PM
Digimom,I haven't gotten my posting bonus.Looking forward to it:)

09-05-2008, 09:03 PM

09-07-2008, 09:16 AM
This is my first template! Thank goodness for the tutorial. I have always wondered how they were done. I can see myself making many more. http://http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21585&limit=recent

09-07-2008, 12:53 PM
Hi - many, many thanks to Hammie for the wonderful tutorial! I started with a LO I did for the scraplift challenge - it took me forrrrrreeeevvvvverrrrrr to get all the photos sized: http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3393&ppuser=1053

Then thanks to the tutorial I made my first template: http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21599&ppuser=1053

And then to be sure it worked I used it to make my entry for the September Color Challenge: http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21612

Now, hopefully, I can figure out the zipping and putting on 4shared part . . .

09-08-2008, 08:11 PM
8.5x11 ok too?

09-08-2008, 10:34 PM
This is very new to me...but so much fun! What a great idea!! I'm excited about all the fabulous templates I am seeing. Quite a bit of talent here!

My template preview is here (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21842&nocache=1).

The layout I based it off of is here (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21832&ppuser=3124).

I turned a layout for the Layout Design Challenge into a Template...two for one deal, in a way...LOL!!

I do have one question....what file format should we save the template to for the 4-shared account? I use PSE6, but I am not sure if .psd is the right format for everyone. Thanks!!

09-09-2008, 06:06 AM
Here's (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=21901&limit=recent) mine - I just want all of YOURS :D

09-09-2008, 06:36 AM
jeepmama - you can zip it or leave it as a psd in 4shared, either way is fine for me. :)

09-09-2008, 03:16 PM
I think I'm addicted to this template making. Here's my second try.

09-09-2008, 09:59 PM
There are so many really nice templates. I can't wait to get my hands on them.

Kimberkatt, thank you for sharing not only the really neat template you made but also the Lo you made .It is so fun to see what can be done with the templates

Thanks! :)

Actually, I make the LO first, then convert into a template! I've tried to do it the other way around, but it's hard for me to visualize that way! :p :D

When I try to post my preview to the gallery, it says I've exhausted my memory limit. It's just a 153K jpg. What am I doing wrong?

09-16-2008, 05:21 PM
150K is the limit on uploads, so you need to just re-size your preview down a little bit. :)

I downsized and it's still not working. I get this message:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 14400 bytes) in /home/stoneacc/public_html/gallery/image-inc.php on line 102

(thank you for holding my hand through this process. I feel like a dummy)

Oh how pretty. Will really show lots of papers

09-28-2008, 08:09 PM
This is the first template I've made so it's a simple one.

I couldn't find a tutorial on making a template in PSE from scratch so by trial and error I figured out a way to do it. It's hard for me to do a template from
a layout I've made because I do most of my layouts in Scrapbook Max and it's saved as a jpeg so no layers to use.

09-29-2008, 11:24 AM
Here's mine!

Here are my templates

10-01-2008, 12:10 AM
This was so much fun! I'm so excited (especially after checking out the photo gallery). Plus - I feel much more confident about creating my own templates! Thank you for the great opportunity, that provided the right 'kick in the pants' to make me sit down and make my own templates.

Who knows, maybe I'll learn how to do more elaborate ones soon *grin*:)

10-01-2008, 02:09 AM
Okay, better late than never, right? I kept having problems and it took me forever to learn how to do all this new stuff, but I feel so much smarter now and I'm excited!

I love taking pictures and can never choose just one or two to use on a page so I decided to make a collage template. I didn't include any spots for journaling, but you could easily use one of the squares for that if you want. I also think this would be good to use to frame something nice on your wall. The way it is would look cool with black and white photos or you could also change the frame part to white and put drop shadows on your photos for a classic look. Anyway, I spent forever on this trying to get all the symetry just perfect so I hope those of you who get it will use it and make it worth my time!

I may have learned how to make a template, zip it, and put it on 4shared, but I still don't know how to put a picture in my post, so I can't do that. =( You'll just have to settle for a link to it in the gallery. Here you go!

10-01-2008, 11:40 AM
that is a fabulous template! You could definitely turn that into a shadowbox type layout! I'm sooo glad you were able to get it in for the exchange! Great job! :)

Again, I want to say thank you to everyone who participated! This exchange ROCKED!! :D

10-02-2008, 08:32 AM
WOW WOW WOW!!! I have a lot of work to do now organizing all these templates ladies!!!! Thanks to ALL of you for participating and just give me a day or two, I've got a swarm of family coming in today, but hopefully can get this all organized and links sent out today or tomorrow.

10-06-2008, 10:12 AM
WOW, there were a TON of templates to go through, I think there were 59-60 in the end!!!! I got them zipped up into 10 zips, some of the template were very large in size and I did need to go adjust a few that had textures and effects on layers as this really isn't necessary for templates and was making them WAY too large in size. I was trying to keep the zips the size we do in the store which is about 35mb, but some templates were larger than that for just 1!!! So there are 10 zips in all, most are in that size range, some a little larger. I have PM everyone from this thread. If you participated and didn't post in this thread, please PM me to let me know so I can get you the zips. This was just the easiest way to get everyone.

Enjoy all the templates!!! And thanks so much for making this such a successful challenge!!!:D

10-06-2008, 10:17 AM
