Hello ALL!!!

Welcome, welcome, welcome! I am on-the-edge-of-my-seat excited to see what y'all are bringing this to competition. September has always been my favorite part of the year, fall, back-to-school, my birthday and now the annual Designer Competition here at SAS. Let the good times roll!!!!

Your Round 1 Assignment is to create a mini kit with all the same expectations I have of my Designers when they get their Mega Kit assignment. The Mega Kit is a monthly kit SAS puts out, and as a Designer for SAS you are expected to make a contribution in the Theme and Palette. This month, our Mega Kit is Autumn Twilight (http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=9&products_id=3540)... gorgeous, perfect and our best yet (I think).

Your assignment is to create a Mega-sized mini-kit using this palette:

http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/color%20palette%20SAS%20week%201.jpg
For Round 1 there will NOT be a theme as well, I want to see some variety, creativity & personality show through! However, as a bonus, for everyone signed up at the time of this posting, I will be sending a PM with a link to a bonus style that coordinates well with this palette. Occasionally I do this with my Designers as well to help make the kit more cohesive, and y'all certainly deserve a little bonus for having to wait sooooooooo long!

http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/SASpittedsilverStylesPreview.jpg

The Rules:
Color Palette
Use the above color palette & style to create a mini-kit. No, you may not add any colors. Yes you can use all of the colors or just two or three of them. Slight variation is to be expected as you apply styles, highlights, shadows. The color orange, however, is not expected.

Your mini-kit must include 2-4 papers and 5-8 elements. You must include at least one clustered element. All of your papers and elements must be created at 300 dpi. The only file types accepted are jpg and png. You must include 2 previews. Both should be: 600X600, 72dpi, jpg files. The first preview should be the standard preview, the second should be a close-up of part of your kit:

http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/store/bmz_cache/0/0684c8d152c46137358a6bf93f98ce1b.image.200x200.jpg http://www.stoneaccentsstudio.com/store/bmz_cache/9/92a83b98d4a89b8a8876a891f1be6949.image.200x200.jpg
Standard Preview Close-up Preview

All of your designs are expected to meet SAS Quality Standards:

Papers:
Fill the entire page
300 dpi
3600X3600 px
Jpeg file
Clear, sharp, resolution
No jpeg artifact
Overlays come to the edge of the document, no unnecessary space

Elements:
300 dpi
Size (on page) appropriate for element
Png files
Each element in their own file
Trimmed of all extra, transparent, space
No stray pixels
No jagged, uneven, edges
No shadows cutoff, or outside of element boundary

Alphas, if done, not required = 1 element only:
300 dpi
Individual .png files
Sheet may/may not be included
Same standards as Elements

TOU included in all zipped files

You may use commercial use/designer resource products in the creation of your mini-kit. You may use more than one photo-editing/vector program to create your kit.

Please do not break any copyright laws in this competition--you will be disqualified if you do. You must state all of the software programs you used in your terms of use. You must also state what commercial products you used in your terms of use and give credit to the original Designer.

All previews must be posted in the Annual SAS Designer Contest Gallery: Round 1: 01SEP - 06SEP 2009 (http://http://www.stoneaccentsstudioforum.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=964). Please post your download links there as well. You may use any outside host including 4shared/rapidshare/boxnet etc. You must use ZIP files only. Do not use RAR. You may blog all you like, post anywhere that it's allowed, drum up votes in any way except making promises or bribes.

Voting will be done by registered SAS users, however please note that you may be disqualified by SAS for breaking any rules. Please, please, please be careful. Ask if you are unsure, we are more than happy to help you.

Round 1 kit will be due September 6, 2009 by 3:00 pm EST.
Round 1 voting will go up after all kits are submitted.
Round 1 results will be posted September 10, 2009.

I have worked to make these rules as clear and easy to understand as possible. However, if you have any questions please post here or PM me. I will take all questions and create a separate FAQ for everyone to benefit from (I will leave your name off).

Good luck!

LOL almost left Liz speechless... FYI, last year, first round, the color palette was so difficult for me. I couldn't understand the people ooh'ing & aah'ing over it. Turned out to be 1) a fantastic learning experience and 2) a triple fantastic kit!

I wish the same for all of you going: Huh.

First and foremost thank u thank u for the styles. i think the palette is beautiful. yes not my usual but a designer creates for others not themselves :)

i do however have a question: when talking about the elements it says no cutting off shadows and to make sure to have the shadows on the elementary parts. when i cluster or even add one item on top i know u have to add a shadow for realism. but i remove all the shadows that are NOT on top of something. is this correct or incorrect?

second...overlays should go all the way to the edge (which i agree) but i have asked this before why they are always a pixel short (as a png they end up being 299 dpi instead of 300 dpi) and i was told it's a png issue and nothing u can do about it. anyone have an answer better than that LOL!

oh yes thanks for the detailed instructions if u can't tell i'm one of those people that needs lots of details :)

Thanks to everyone for getting this ready. I left my system running all night, and when i got up to (tmi so leaving it out!), i checked and YAYyyy! never went back to bed. When my alarm went off, i ignored it (couldn't figure out what the heck it was...). grays are not me, but as all have said it will be a challenge.

So, i have a couple of questions:

1, I like making fabric-y kinds of papers which are often a little crinkly around the edges. Am i assuming correctly that that type of "paper" is not allowed for this week.

2. 5 of the same ribbon different colors, 5 paper clips, different tops/colors, 5 same shaped brads, different colors/maybe patterns: do this all count as one and can all five be on the same sheet?

Ok, i am at work and i took so long to edit this post that the EDIT disappeared and it was long, so i'm gonna stop with these two questions so i can get them answered....

Lynn
09-01-2009, 08:21 AM
Oh, wow, those are definitely not colours I would normally choose so a real challenge there, but then that is just what I need (and want, lol!). I can see them working well together though. And as for a theme...my mind is a complete blank at the moment so I will have to get cracking to come up with some ideas...fast!!!

Thanks for the clear instructions, although I am sure that once I get started, I will have loads of really stupid questions so watch this space!!!

I hope these are the first (and last!) dumb questions I ask, but I just want to make sure I've got this right. : )

For round 1, we are supposed to pick our own theme based on these colors and name our kit whatever we want, correct? And the kit should not be any bigger than 2-4 papers and 5-8 elements, or can we have more if we want?

tinkermama05
09-01-2009, 10:43 AM
Jenn, so am I. I just LOVE the color palette.

Okay so am I right in assuming that because the only file type that our papers can be in is JPG, we can't make worn and torn papers because they have to be PNG?

I'm so not looking forward to work - I just want to stay home and play now. :( Oh well...off I go, hopefully I can get off a little early to come home and play.

This is correct, there should be NO shadow showing around the element (only within), best way to check is to put a white background behind the element, if you see shadowing then erase it :)

...overlays should go all the way to the edge (which i agree) but i have asked this before why they are always a pixel short (as a png they end up being 299 dpi instead of 300 dpi) and i was told it's a png issue and nothing u can do about it. anyone have an answer better than that LOL!

Sometimes when a file is being saved is loses a pixel, it will end up being 299.9 (or thereabouts)... this tiny difference will not make a difference to the quality of your work ... just be sure to SAVE it at 300 dpi in the first instance :)

So, i have a couple of questions:

1, I like making fabric-y kinds of papers which are often a little crinkly around the edges. Am i assuming correctly that that type of "paper" is not allowed for this week.

A JPG is a standard paper but we all know that worn/torn papers can end up being PNG - this is acceptable in a Mega kit so is acceptable here :)

. 5 of the same ribbon different colors, 5 paper clips, different tops/colors, 5 same shaped brads, different colors/maybe patterns: do this all count as one and can all five be on the same sheet?

Each element must be in it's own PNG file :)
One ribbon done in five colors is still ONE unique element, in a Mega that is what we are looking for, unique items :)

Mitsybelle
09-01-2009, 02:38 PM

Yes, pick your own theme and name your own kit :)

Please keep to the size requirements, make your elements unique (all different) - the reason there are not many papers/elements is because in a Mega Kit you may have 12 or more Designers contributing to the kit, can you imagine the size

Worn/torn papers would be acceptable in a Mega kit in PNG format, please be sure that your overlays do reach right to the sides though and DO check for those pesky pixels :)

Sometimes when putting together a Mega we need to use our own judgement, will it stick out amongst everything else? if so DON'T USE IT ... or does it flow nicely with the theme/color of the kit? Toiny says slight variations in color are inevitable and as long as it 'fits' it is ok - just don't use orange !!! LOL :D:p:D

No, all kits must be downloadable from SAS, when you upload your previews to the Gallery you must have the download links available in the description :)

You may offer a Quickpage or cluster etc made using the kit on your blog to promote yourself but NOT the kit itself :)

This comment got me. I finished my papers, but when I asked myself if they would stick out amongst everything else, I don't know if they will. My style is very rugged and textured. It's hard when you don't know what everybody else is doing. Personally, I like them. But I'm not sure if they will fit in with everybody else's. And when you use texture, it does change the color somewhat, (a little bit) but atleast it's not orange! I do have a theme and a name picked out however. I think I'm thinking too much, and not letting it flow like I usually do.

Are we supposed to put our close-up preview in the description of our mini preview or load it separately?

And... if we have our own preview packaging, can we use it, or does it have to be sans packaging?

And... (last one for now) do we have to use the provided styles or are they optional?

Thanks! :)

Wow, that is fast! Well done! I haven't even decided on a theme yet although one is beginning to take shape....slowly! Guess my brain needs lots of thinking time! I daren't go look at anyone else's yet as I don't want to inadvertently copy someone else's ideas.

It's also totally okay to post an image preview of your mini on your blog and wherever you advertise your self but keep the link only in the sas gallery :)

Yes Laura Marie I went and looked at your blog, you can post the image there if you wanted to LOL
Tracy

I thought i read in the FAQ That Toiny said that we could put the preview there

I think with a mini so small you would find it hard to go with a theme anyway, it's different if we are running with a theme for a mega kit. Please remember to put your name on your files, you want to be credited and some scrappers do separate them from their folders to put in catagories so put your name then the kit name then e1, p1 etc.
And put it in a folder too please, same naming convention here too. Zip files only, no rar's.

Okay Lecture over rofl!!!

Okay I had to delete the preview thread so just try and keep the images to the gallery, we think it may contribute to the log in problems some members are having, slowing site etc.

Thanks Ladies :)

Just in case some of you lovely ladies are wondering, both Tracy and I are going to try ... and I mean try (there's alot of kits this week) to download and do a layout with each one and show how the kits can be used, you will notice we are using the same photos, Tracy has a lovely one of herself and her hubby and I have a set of three that I will use of my darling daughter .... enjoy the thrill of seeing your work being used if it's never happened before :D

Our stuff can be a different theme right? What I mean is - my theme will be totally different from what everyone else's is...it's a pretty unique idea that I thought of before the contest and the colors are perfect for this so I was going to go with it. I know it's supposed to be a "mega-kit" but my theme will be pretty different. Just wondering if that's ok.

And if you guys don't have time to work with mine that's okay...if my little tiny CT lol doesn't have time to work with it, I will make at least one layout.

And it's perfectly okay to take the kit after the contest is over and turn it into a full-sized kit to sell, right? Just checking. :)

So run with your idea and make it yours!! :)

Hello ALL!!!

Toiny<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Ok I'm big on not breaking copywrite laws as I do not want mine broken either. but if our CU TOU's say no credit required do we still need to give credit???? I want to make sure because that is the only CU's I use and i have them all categorized with no tou's they are in seperate file in case it comes in to question.

thanks again. i should have all the rules down by next round if i make it

I just don't have time to give this contest my all, so I'd rather step aside now because I already see some very beautiful creations in the gallery! GAH! Ok so i'm really beginning to hate VISTA! I can't get the colors to match exactly in PSPX even saving the color palette with the optimizer option!! WAAAA!!! Am i going to get penalized if the colors aren't exactly what were listed? talking about miniscule tone change.. i didn't realize it was off until i was wanting to color match, and was like hey i know that's not the right Hex Code.

kimberkatt
09-03-2009, 08:55 AM
ohhhh.... don't get me started on VISTA!!! down with Vista, I say!! Buyer, beware!!! It's awful!

Is it that big of a difference? Or just a slight tone mis-match?

Enchanted
09-03-2009, 09:00 AM
it's looking more like a slight tone mis-match. like i said i didn't even notice it until i was starting my elements. I didn't really have a problem with vista until i realized my PSP programs DIDN'T work right. But if i can find money for PSPX2 i'm so getting it.. it's shiny and awesome and works just fine with vista!
I just want to know now, while i've only done papers and not the whole kit..and find out it's a disqualifiing factor.

I use PSPXI on Vista (Home Premium) so I opened the palette in several different programs after what you said. I only found a very slight variance with one program. All the rest look the same.

BTW, I had X2 installed on my machine then dumped it and went back to XI. The Materials Palette took nearly a minute and a half to load each time I wanted to change colors or use a gradient or pattern. No way was I going to live with that! I recently installed X2 on my laptop, also Vista (Home Premium). The second time I went to open it, it said it was corrupted. Uninstalled it, installed XI. I'll stick with that version until X3 and only then install that when it's been around awhile. Why did Jasc every sell it?:(

I agree with you. Vista haters uuumm I mean users we need pitch forks, torches and a mob going to hunt down those - well can't say what I'd like to call them - programers/designers/head hanchos who thought Vista was the best out there and got rid of XP.

I have a huge brand new laptop, with all the bells and whistles but at this moments I prefer my old laptop who's poor screen hinge broke and had to be proped up just so I could use it. :( The thing ran so slow it took forever to get a layout done. That wasn't fun ... not.

One ribbon done in five colors is still ONE unique element, in a Mega that is what we are looking for, unique items

Yes, pick your own theme and name your own kit

Please keep to the size requirements, make your elements unique (all different) - the reason there are not many papers/elements is because in a Mega Kit you may have 12 or more Designers contributing to the kit, can you imagine the size

Ok, I understand the element thing, but what about papers? Is a paper with the same texture in different colors, each considered a different paper or one paper?

Ambowife Designs
09-04-2009, 08:08 AM
Yes I would say that is how it applies to papers too, Customers don't want to pay for a kit that has 4 papers and all of them are the same paper recolored, know what I mean. And Toiny is applying the same requirements in design to the contestants as she does to her designers here at SAS.

For the purposes of the competition and especially since this first challenge is only 3 - 4 papers everyone should be able to come up with 4 different ones. Toiny correct me if I am wrong here :)
Hope that clears that up for you all

Toiny
09-04-2009, 09:25 AM
What Tracy said... papers should be 2-4 unique papers. Not the same paper recolored 4 times. I do not want 16 papers, 4 different papers recolored 4 times each. Your mini kit should not exceed 4 papers.

I will be a little blunt here, but most experienced scrappers can recolor. I frequently have CT, customers recolor the items I designed. I am interested in your design skills, not your recoloring skills.

I hope that clarifies it without being too harsh. I know how on-the-edge-of-your-seat y'all are and I am just trying to help you be all you can be:)

I guess I will also post the preview here and if that is not correct, I can always delete it. http://i788.photobucket.com/albums/yy163/sparkyllc_photos/Teddy%20Bears/KBS-Memories-Preview600.jpg?t=1252093786

Wrong, wrong, wrong:p

The poll goes up at 3:00 pm EST on the 6th, earlier if all the kits are in and I'm looking lively.

The poll closes when I get up on the 10th (around midnight EST on the 9th)... I left that a little open ended, still not fully adjusted to the time here. Do I need to have a super set closing time?

I will post the next assignment combined with the official list of those moving on to Round 2 shortly after the poll closes.

Smooches,

Tony

I believe the poll opens up Monday, the 7th and will close on the 10th? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong... :)

Yes Tirza you can post it on your blog, the poll times and a preview to your submission but not the download link, they have to come to the gallery to get that. I can just see you all sitting here waiting for the poll to go up so you can post the direct link, we were all anxious about that last year, refresh refresh refresh, ah the memories LOL

Astrid you are so welcome I'm off to check out the new uploads woo hoo!!!

LinneyBoo, that would be a good idea, since there is a size limit in the rules this week :)
I would do as KatLen suggested and repackage the extras as a mini add on and post it on your blog :)

Okay I think that's you all covered for now

I will be a little blunt here, but most experienced scrappers can recolor. I frequently have CT, customers recolor the items I designed. I am interested in your design skills, not your recoloring skills.

I did add a few recolored to my kit but I'll keep that in mind if I pass go and collect $200 on my way to the next round. ;)

So with all the talk of not repeating our self in our kits.
Here is my 2 Questions

Question 1
If you use an element in your cluster is it out for the rest of the kit?

Question 2
Is It OK to use the kit elements to make a Scatter Paper? Or is that a no no?

Maybe I should just make a different paper & then Extract more items for elements. ....hmmm...

There is always tomorrow

Diana .... what on earth is a 'Scatter Paper'? sorry if I'm sounding naive here hun :)

The cluster element counts as one of your elements.

ok lets see ... if you use an element to decorate your paper, then you can still use THAT element as one of your elements.

If you use that element in a cluster, you can still have it on it's own as a separate element.

Hope this helps ladies :)

That is the the Term Given To Me by someone else a long time ago.
I am so out of date about everything that no one knows what I am talking about :(

But I am learning more and more of today's shortcuts to Design Faster. Do Love the modern computer! Vista is a Million times better then DOS or Windows ME

Hmmm Redid my paper already. Made a new element and came up with another idea.

Hmmm Maybe I should just go ask the shed shifter for advise. He was very helpful on the new paper this morning, Men are good for making get it done now decisions.

Wow, now I can say I can breathe again!!! That was difficult. I don't know how the designers come up with their theme, color palette and a whole kit in such a short time. I did an alpha for my kit and that was the hardest part of the whole kit for me.

Anyway, I know a few of you found my Harmony mini kit (http://www.stoneaccentsstudioforum.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=41556) in the gallery, but here it is for everyone else.

And I created a quickpage from my kit and you can pick it up on my blog (http://mizamigosmumblings.blogspot.com/).

Good luck to everyone taking part in the contest.

Ok, I'm just finalising everything here prior to uploading and posting my previews but I just need to check something. Say you make 2 different types of the same element eg 2 shapes, 2 flowers, 2 gems, etc, each shape, flower, gem and so on being different from the other one (so you have, say, a square gem and a round gem), kwim? Well, if you then use those 2 elements to make 2 seperate brads, each brad fractionally different, do:

1. the brads count as one or two elements; and
2. do the original elements count as one or two elements?

I'm thinking that the original elements count as 2, and the brads as 1, but is that right?

With the information from this thread I am using the same elements in the kit that I used in my cluster. If this turns out to be a mistake some one pm so I can fix it before the deadline.

The Birthday Boy (I totally forgot) Shed Shifter has Spoken. He says use the paper I made this morning an everything else that was ready yesterday. The elements I used in my Cluster.
So now it is time to triple check my files and dress up that preview

Lynn, there should be 5-8 (unique) elements in your kit, no more - no less, we want unique elements not recolored elements (so please do not put recolored elements in your kit) .... so that means put 5-8 different elements in your kit, a square gem is one element, a round gem is one element if you use the round gem to make a brad then that is another element .... and so on :) I hope this helps

Ambowife Designs
09-05-2009, 04:47 PM
That's right, if the brads are different, like they have a different image on them or different centre then they are different elements and classed as individuals, ie 2 different brads are 2 elements. If you have 2 brads different colors and that is the only difference then they are one element.

Tip - this is why we have said to be particular about what elements you decide to include in your kit.
With there only being 8 elements allowed, one brad should be enough in a kit that size, you want your customers to be able to make a layout with your kit so give them what they need to make a good layout (eg: a bit of ribbon, tag, brad, clip,a few decorative elements like a flower or flourish, a frame, and a cluster element). KWIM? If they can't put together a layout with the kit then they won't and you won't get exposure if nobody is scrapping with your kit.

Lynn
09-05-2009, 05:15 PM
I know, I was just checking 'cos you mentioned the recolouring, and whilst I haven't recoloured the brads, they are very similar (if you ignore the fact that they have a different element on each one).

Anyhow, thanks a lot for the explanation, it is now much clearer in my head (sometimes, it takes a while for things to get through all the rubbish I keep up there :) ). I've tweaked my kit and am about to go upload it now (after double and triple checking I have the right number of elements, lol!)!

I wanted to vote last year but haven't find the way, so this year as I am a contestant I would like to spend a few words on How to vote on my blog for not so experienced friends. So that they can register eventually and find the way to support me....
