View Full Version : Feb 2010 Wordart Challenge

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Okay ladies, are you ready? Welcome to the all-new WORDART challenge at theStudio!! I am so incredibly excited to be hosting this challenge! I have a love of words that I want to pass along to all of you! :DD
First, the idea of this challenge is to teach you all that there is sooo much you can do with Text!! Have you ever finished a layout and said to yourself: "Gee, that stark black wordart just doesn't seem to go with the rest of the layout!" Well, I'm here to teach you how to transform that same wordart into a beautiful addition to your layouts!
Each month, I will supply a basic black wordart for you all to download. Your challenge is to transform it into a work of art! I will offer tips, tricks & techniques every month that you can use to make your wordart shine!
For our very first challenge, I thought it would be best to start with the basics: color fills and turning your wordart into a sticker! Please download the FREE wordart below and let's begin!
http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af18/TheStudioGirl123/Kimberkatt-FebWA-preview.jpg (http://www.4shared.com/file/213674841/f1329ee5/Kimberkatt-StudioFeb10WAChalle.html)
~~ DOWNLOAD HERE ~~ (http://www.4shared.com/file/213674841/f1329ee5/Kimberkatt-StudioFeb10WAChalle.html)
(I use PSE, so I'm hoping these little tutorials will work/adapt for whichever program you may use)
Start a new 12X12, 300ppi canvas
Open the PNG wordart file & drag onto your new canvas - I left it large, so it should fill up your 12X12 canvas and be easy to work with
This is where we add some color! Choose your "magic wand" tool.
Make sure you are on the wordart layer & click inside the large black "Smile" text. Repeat for each letter, if necessary, until the entire word has the "marching ants" around it.
Next, choose the color you wish to use, select the Paint Fill tool, and click inside the "marching ants" to fill your black text with some color!
A little explanation as to why I select the text first, instead of just filling with color: If you don't select the object you want to color, the paint fill can bleed and distort your edges. The "marching ants" around the text gives your program a stopping point and keeps the edges of your shape crisp & smooth.
Now, you have a choice from here. You can repeat the steps for the "I love your" part of the wordart and fill with a different color, or you can choose to leave that part black, it's up to you!
Next, it's time to make it look like a sticker! This is sooo very easy!
Make sure your wordart layer is selected, then go to Edit->Stroke(outline)Selection
Another box should pop up where you can choose your settings. In the top box (width) is where you set how thick of a stroke you want to use. I typically use between 10-30 for a sticker look. For my example above, I used a stroke of 15pixels.
The next box, color, is where you choose which color to stroke with. I used White (ffffff), so click on the box and the color picker should pop up for you to choose. You don't have to stick with white, though... you can choose whichever color you want!
Next, make sure your Location is set to "outside", so it will stroke around the edges of your text.
Leave the Blending options at Normal, 100% and Preserve Transparency UNchecked.
Click OK and you should now see your stroke around your wordart!
And that's all folks! You should now have a colored wordart, with a sticker look! Pretty easy, right?
Now, it's up to you weather you want to leave as just a sticker, or get fancy with some elements/clustering around your wordart. The fancy part will come in another lesson, another month! LOL! For this month, the only challenge is to color & sticker the wordart!
You have another choice - for this challenge, I only require that you work on the wordart, however, feel free to create a layout with your newly colored wordart, if you so choose! Please post your finished works in the Decorate Your Wordart Challenge Gallery (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=1043) and post a link back here so I can see the beauty you've created!! As always, if you get stuck, or have some questions, please, please post them here and I will be more than happy to help you out!! I really hope you enjoy my little lessons here and I can't wait to see how you all do with this first challenge! :DD
Here's my wordart sticker
and here is the layout I made using it
02-02-2010, 02:00 PM
Whoohoo, our first victim... er, player!! :DD You did awesome Trish!
I forgot to tell you ladies in the first post, you can add bevels/drop shadows/patterns, etc if you already know how! You don't have to follow that closely along with the tutorial... as long as you have the "sticker" stroke around it, you will get the points for completing the challenge! :)
You can also add embellishments to fancy it up, if you'd like! ;) I just want you guys to start thinking outside the plain black, and make it your own! :DD
This is as close as I can get with the software I have. No Photoshop type programs on my Mac.
02-02-2010, 02:17 PM
Oh whew! I'm glad that I didn't break the rules by doing a couple extra things to the wordart :-)
When I stopped whining about how I couldn't do it, went back and fiddled some more and got closer this time. Just the word smile is what I changed, much closer HURRAY.
02-02-2010, 02:41 PM
Woot Judy! Isn't it awesome when you learn something new?! :DD I have never heard of the program you use, probably because I don't use a Mac :l seems like you have some great tools on there that are just waiting to be discovered! :DD
Fabulous job so far ladies!! Keep them coming!
02-02-2010, 02:42 PM
Oh whew! I'm glad that I didn't break the rules by doing a couple extra things to the wordart :-)
Oh, well... even if you blatantly disregarded the rules, I'd still let you slide! ;) :DD :l
02-02-2010, 04:46 PM
Here is a page I did using my new, recolored and decorated word art. Thank you so much Kimberly, I learned 2 new things. I never knew that I could recolor by selecting parts with the magic wand and I never knew how to make the sticker outline. The word art is great and I will use it again. Thanks.
02-02-2010, 04:51 PM
I am a font/quotation and whatever includes some form of text dumb so I am EXTREMELY happy to learn something about it!
Here's my try, I only recolored, put some overlay on the smile part and add some shadowing.
Will try the add-some-elements part in the next lessons!!
You're such a softie Kim, thanks ;)
02-02-2010, 07:03 PM
here is mine , i did a layout with the worart.
02-03-2010, 10:38 AM
Pixelmator worked, but I am going to look into the the program you suggested. ;)
By the way, all elements used in both of my word arts are from SKrapper Digitals' contribution to the January Megakit, SnowGames.:m
02-03-2010, 10:43 AM
I am so excited about this!! I never like to use the app. Pixelmator on my Mac, because I always learn by trial and error, and there's too much error for personal comfort for me on such a technical program. Well, maybe not technical for others, but it is for me! But your advice worked great for my program, too! Thanks!!!:((
I really like this challenge. I use the stroke feature alot, although I tend to put the stroke on it's own layer, but the magic wand has always frustrated me! Now I think I can play with it & learn more about what it can do. Here is my first attempt at decorated word art. Thanks Kimberkatt!
02-03-2010, 11:15 AM
Oh this is so terrific.Exactly what I need to make my Lo's look better.Thank you Thank you
02-03-2010, 12:55 PM
Whoohooo! Look at all the purtty, purtty wordart in the gallery!! You ladies are doing fantastic!! I'm so glad you all are enjoying the challenge and learning some new tricks, too!! :DD
Those of you without Photoshop are amazing me here! I'm sooo happy you all can adapt the instructions for your programs! Yay!! :((
02-03-2010, 03:23 PM
I have a totally different program so I hoping this follows the rules. Don't have some of the features you described but I flattened and then shadowed to try to get the sticker effect. :) Kendra
Ooooh.... I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this new challenge! I've already been playing with it and have made word arts on my own a few times but am always wanting to learn something new ;)
BTW... Are we allowed to give away as a freebie on our own blog? I was making it to match one of my most latest freebie kits... "My Love" which is a Heritage Valentine kit!
02-05-2010, 05:09 PM
Sure Cindy! I used CU fonts for the Wordart, so once decorated, you can give it away! :)
02-05-2010, 09:22 PM
Thank You Kimberly!
I figure I'd ask if we could have an alphabet making challenge or maybe some tutorials since you do seem to specialize in that :)
I've made a few of those. One was a sticker alphabet but I used an action by atomic cupcake since it never dawned on me to use the stroke... doh!
02-05-2010, 11:27 PM
I love this idea for a challenge, really extending our skills.
Here is my take on the Smile WA
Credits same for both (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=50559)
Wow... This was soooo much fun ;) Thanks Kimberly!!
I made the colors to match the My Love - Heritage Valentine Freebie Kit on my blog: http://www.cindyrelly.blogspot.com/
Just scroll down to see the initial kit post...
There's also an alphabet and I am going to post more freebies to match it between now and the end of the month ( I did kind of get carried away ) so check back periodically ;)
I can't wait till the next Word Art Challenge!
