View Full Version : Week 1: Scrap a Hero

05-30-2011, 01:18 AM
Hi all! I'm excited to see you here & ready to scrap. This is a simple contest with simple prizes, it is open to everyone. Studio Designers, Admin and CT may play along for fun.

This week your assignment is to: Scrap a Hero
In honor of Memorial Day, of course. You may scrap anyone who is your hero, but if you have someone who has served in the military, well, that would just be awesome.

You may use any kit, though Studio kits are appreciated, you may use any templates, fonts, LO styles you like! The only requirement is that they are up in our Week 1: Scrap a Hero (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1259-week-1-3a-scrap-a-hero.html) gallery & by the end of the day Thursday, June 2 (so midnight EST).

Layouts will be judged & voted on privately by the Studio Design & Admin team. Winners will be announced on the weekend. Each winner gets a fantastic Studio kit free to work with for next weeks assignment. The assignment will go up on Monday no later than 6:00 a.m. EST.

I can not wait to see everyone's LO's!

Big smooches,

It's been updated to include the Week 1: Scrap a Hero (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1259-week-1-3a-scrap-a-hero.html) gallery! I can't wait to see your LO's!

This week your assignment is to: Scrap a Hero
In honor of Memorial Day, of course. You may scrap anyone who is your hero, but if you have someone who has served in the military, well, that would just be awesome...

I imagine that the layouts we submit must be newly created ones for this contest but thought I'd check to be sure because I have created a military layout of my father in the past. If old layouts can not be used, then would it be okay to do a 'make-over' and submit that?

Thanks Toiny for this super assignment and contest!

05-30-2011, 08:51 AM
Okay, because you know I can be a pain in the butt  We can scrap any hero, right? Doesn't have to be military? I do have military of my Pa - but I sort of had another idea going in my brain.... :DD

05-30-2011, 08:55 AM
LOL and here I thought it was easy & already two questions.

Rose: You can submit an old layout if you'd like. There really are no rules except meet the theme. Next week will be tougher for everyone that makes it through. This is really just a try-out week.

Kim: Any hero is great. Though, honestly, I'd so love to see the military one of your Pa.

Big smooches,

05-30-2011, 09:18 AM
I scrapped this page for a friend. Her husband is in the army and the pictures are from his current deployment. Their son is 5 years old, and just didn't understand why daddy had to leave for almost a year. He also left a wife and infant daughter behind. He is due home in the next couple months from this deployment.

05-30-2011, 09:23 AM
What a lovely thing to do for a friend! It's so hard on the kids (Dane kept yelling at me to go get Daddy from the airport, thought I'd left him there LOL). It's not a memory we look to scrap, yet it's a fantastic one to have in the years to come and for the generations to come. Great job!

05-30-2011, 09:28 AM
Sorry I don't have anyone who was in the military.
My lil' twin grandbabies are my heroes.

05-30-2011, 09:34 AM
Kim: Any hero is great. Though, honestly, I'd so love to see the military one of your Pa.

You're probably going to get your wish - I can't find the pic I was thinking of  :duh: :grrr: Pa, here I come! :DD

05-30-2011, 09:55 AM
I am working on some ideas....you know me...I take forever to decide!
Thanks for the new exciting contest!

I have one little question: The rules say "You may use any kit..." Does that mean we need to use just one, or may we combine a few?

05-30-2011, 12:05 PM
I made mine. The LO's so far are just beautiful.

Another chance to scrap my late husband. Love it!

05-30-2011, 12:45 PM
Love this first weeks challenge, thank you for giving us such a great opportunity to scrap a worthy theme.

05-30-2011, 01:24 PM
Oh, I hope it was okay to combine kits...if not, I will replace or redo. But, here is my original page, using 2 kits. I so love my page of my DH, firefighter, but I always wanted to take this opportunity to scrap some military of my DS, who is also my hero! All the pages thus submitted are just gorgeous!! What an inspiring first week!!!

Here is my layout for A Hero's Story with my Uncle Bob.

On April 16th. and 17th 1947, two ships, the S. S. Grandcamp and the Highflyer, blew up in the harbor of Texas City. The disaster was one of the deadliest industrial accidents in the U.S. history, Texas was then the 11th. largest harbor in the United States. Over 500 people died and 2500 were injured, including schoolchildren. Some Monsanto engineers speculated that the blast was worse than the atom bomb which had recently exploded at Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the Texas City disaster was at ground 0. The Texas City disaster was the largest industrial disaster in United States history. These events also triggered the first ever class action lawsuit against the United States government, under the then-recently enacted Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), on behalf of 8,485 victims.
My uncle Bob was living and working there after serving in World War II in the Navy. The picture is of him in his uniform holding me.. Later he went into the Merchant Marines until he retired which was after his business blew up 16th of April 1947. On that courage day he lived because he had just walked out of his shop and was putting some thing into a car which had both doors open at the time. According to his 8 page letter he sent home to his parents, he tried to telegraph them but couldn't so wrote this letter of which I put parts of in the layout. He ran to make sure his landlord was all right.
He remembered running and seeing a woman and children sitting in the street screaming. They were all cut to ribbons with flying glass and blood was running like water. Everybody got the same idea at the same time and that was to get out of town. He then ran to see about his elderly landlord and got her out to their daughters home. Her home is in his map he drew down the street from his business. He described the dead bodies of friends and every thing that happened that day to his parents in the letter. He could not believe he was alive with all the flying items. His last paragraph is, " I have to say now is I have seen it go up before and I have seen it come down but I never saw it go up and go down beside coming out all sides at the same time. This includes my business.
Love Bob"

I have one little question: The rules say "You may use any kit..." Does that mean we need to use just one, or may we combine a few?

Oh, absolutely, grab everything in your scrap arsenal you need! Just make sure to credit each kit/designer :DD

05-30-2011, 01:57 PM
I forgot to say..... OMG! these layouts are exceptional!! <3

05-30-2011, 02:30 PM
I added a LO of my Aunt. She is a cancer survivor and is definately a hero. Her determination to beat it and her attitude during treatment and the lingering side effects are what make her a true hero.

There are amazing layouts here. I so love our military. :)

Here is my layout.

I first thought I wouldn't be able to do a layout because I just couldn't remember anyone in the military. Then I remembered. When I went through my mother's things, I found all the old letters from my uncles they wrote home during their days serving in WWII. My grandmother had kept them, and when she died, my mother kept them. Now that she has died, I have them along with a lot of other old papers. What a treasure trove for me. Along with photos of my uncles, I scanned in letters and envelopes and used them in a two page layout. Unfortunately, because it is double width, it doesn't show too well as it is showing small. (Hehe, I guess the gallery limits don't permit a 1200x600 px LO to show at full width and I didn't want to cut it in two.) So here is Letters from the Front. The letter I scanned and used was written from France, one of the countries where my uncle Willard was stationed. Uncle Elmer was stationed in the Pacific where he flew bombers. Both survived the war and lived into their 80's.

there is information about The Changing of the Guard in the gallery...

05-30-2011, 09:23 PM
Here is mine, I'm so excited about is challenge. I used the Song of Spring collab.

05-30-2011, 09:48 PM
Oh, ladies - what amazing LO's so far! Some are really quite emotional, and some are so inspirational. Here is mine. My Father-in-law is my son's hero, and they marched together this year in the Anzac Parade. Joey has a miniature set of Poppy's medals which he takes so much pride in wearing. Poppy has only recently begun to 'remember', or even acknowledge, his time in the military. He never wanted to talk about it before, and I'm assuming he had some horrific experiences. I'm hoping one day he can share his stories (good or bad) with me so they can be recorded for the sake of our family's history. I think having a grandson to share these remembrance days with has really helped :)

I used Aimee Harrison's gorgeous 'Hero Of The Day' (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=13_243&products_id=6444) kit ;)

05-30-2011, 11:41 PM
I think the challenge in this one for me was to decide WHICH hero to scrap. Our family has fought in every war involving America since before there WAS America. Chose this one because Uncle Don is not doing well. Want to send it to him.

05-31-2011, 05:08 AM
Great challenge for this week, and I've loved seeing the super layouts everyone's put up. Here's mine, going from the specific (my dad) to the many.

Absolutely beautiful pages Ladies, guess I'd better get going on one.

05-31-2011, 09:45 AM
I know Jean Ann! I'm really enjoying them myself. I need to get my own play-along LO done.

05-31-2011, 10:40 AM
Still thinking on how to get this going. No army men (or women for that matter) in my family. But I do have a little hero nearby, he is yelling at me right now, little fellow. I did something he doesn't like, but hee..... he may be my hero, I'm his mother LOL, so I'm the boss!!

05-31-2011, 11:11 AM
are the LOs supposed to be 12 x 12?

05-31-2011, 11:43 AM
Here's mine:

05-31-2011, 12:54 PM
Here's mine- My Dad. I used Skrapper Digital's Black Label Classics- Jan to make the page. The black and white photos are over 60 years old as is the hand colored one, but they are starting to degrade. There are some really great pages here! http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/data/1259/skd-an.jpg

05-31-2011, 02:23 PM

05-31-2011, 05:22 PM
I did a hybrid. Great excuse to get my Father's Day card done early for a change!

If we go forward, do you need us to post in the forum as well as put our LO's in the gallery?

05-31-2011, 06:49 PM
here is my Scrap a Hero LO! It is my son, Nick!

My hero is my son, Nicholas! I am so very proud of him! He joined the Navy before high school graduation and has worked very hard at his goals. He is a Computer Technician and is stationed on a Destroyer. He married his high school sweetheart, Kelsey in July 2010 and is going to college thru the Navy. He is very smart, very kind and loves his family. He gets leave in a few weeks and then will be Deployed for a year! I will miss him! God Bless him and all our young troops serving the USA!

05-31-2011, 08:33 PM

Other LOs are so beautiful and inspiring coming straight from the heart.

I need to work tomorrow, I should be sleeping! But I was inspired by the challenge's theme, so I had to create the next page of my grandpa's war stories. This was a brand new LO for the challenge.

We were fortunate enough to video tape my grandfather telling his stories about a year before he died, so I'm working on transcribing them and turning them into LOs. For anyone interested in the first page, I uploaded it to my gallery here (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/member-galleries/p78081-grandpa-27s-war-stories.html).

I decided to do an ATC honoring ALL of the canine officers who risk their lives to protect their human partners, and to the amazing veterinary teams who work just as hard to care of the furry "first responders" when they need help.

Yay, I got it done in time! Getting T-Storms now and on alert for Tornadoes and busy tomorrow so I had to rush to finish. :)

Everyone's layouts are so awesome, good luck to all!

I was going to submit an old layout I did here (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/member-galleries/p11591-my-fatherwwii.html) at theStudio but instead went with this new one.

What great layouts by everyone!
My layout is honoring those that are helping out with the tornado that hit in the southwest corner of my state - Missouri. Missouri Task Force One search-and-rescue team guides a live-find dog through the tornado wreckage of a public housing complex in Joplin, Missouri. May 23, 2011

Hi, This is my first digiscrap for a while. Went looking for my digi scrapbooking stuff, and the external hard drive all my kits were on had died. Will have to lookout all my backup DVD's huh?
I just love this mini add on kit, Serenity Obsession, by the current featured designer eqrAveziur Designs.

Here's my new layout. Thanks to Toiny for helping my upload it. (It took her all of 20 minutes to respond for my request for help! Pretty good service.)
I realize it may have an unintentional funny touch. I said he was loved by his children, grandchildren, spouses and ex-spouses. I didn't mean that he had many wives - he was married to my mom for 50 years. I meant that the spouses and ex-spouses "of his children" adored him.

06-02-2011, 08:14 AM
my heroes are the ordinary men and women who sacrificed their way of life to ensure we could be free

06-02-2011, 09:06 AM
Here is just one of my heroes:

My heroes are the American service men and women. I was particularly touched by the story of Pat Tillman the professional football player who gave it all up to serve our country. This is my first try at participating, I hope I have done it right. :)

Are we supposed to post layouts here as well as in the gallery? Well , in case I need to post here as well, here it is! I am intensely proud of my son, and have had difficulty just reading through all the awesome military stories here! But here is my story, that of my son, my hero.

06-02-2011, 09:57 PM
I went off on a bit of a tangent while thinking about my heroes and ended up dedicating my page to the authors who inspire and encourage me, some of whom I love so much I named my daughters after them.

This was absolutely FABULOUS. Wow. What an amazing turnout. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing, and reading, all your hero's. I am in awe of the sheer number of selfless hero's we have, or had, in our midst.

Week 1 is officially over. Results will be announced this weekend, in this thread. Voting is being conducted in the private Designer & Admin forum.

Week 2's assignment will be posted early Monday morning.

Huge smooches to all of you,
