Hello ALL!

Welcome, welcome, welcome! I am on-the-edge-of-my-seat excited to see what everyone is bringing to this competition. September has always been my favorite part of the year, fall, back-to-school, my birthday and now the annual Next Designer Competition here at theStudio.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttp://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/forum/ />

A quick reminder, everyone is welcome. Color is the first thing a customer sees. It sets the tone, the feel, the look of a kit. Todays’ challenge is going to focus on pale colors. Staying true to a pale color scheme will be a test of your talents.

I am a big fan of pale colors. Yay! And if me posting the swatch is all that goes wrong... well, color me happy (pun so intended).

I'm glad, so far, the swatch is liked. I know it is not everyone's cup-of-tea. The world would be boring if it was, but I'm hoping the Challenge of using it stretches all your wings.

I adore pale colors also, and I love this swatch, just a question and I am so sorry for start bothering but Toiny, when you say solid papers you mean without texture, without nothing, just solid with a single color?
Just wondering since I always work with textures, even in solid papers and soft ones, I am used to use some kind of texture , and I don't want to start and do it wrong, thanks so much...I love this contest already.

Toiny
09-01-2011, 05:45 AM
Eeek! NO Karen. I mean solid with texture. Even with some variation of color throughout, or on the edges. I mean without pattern.

Please do use texture.

And you are never a bother. Please ask away... any & all.

Round 1 kit will be due September 5, 2011 by 24:00 EST.

I am just double checking on this due date/time... so this is due at the 'stroke of midnight' on the 5th, meaning we only have 3.5 days (from posting time) to work on this (being due the minute after 11:59 PM on the 4th)? Is that correct?

Toiny
09-01-2011, 05:54 AM
Nope. You have all of the 5th. I was hoping by using the 24-hr clock it would be clear. You have the full 24 hours of the 5th to work.

Is that better?

when you say "12 unique elements."

do you mean themed elements or would buttons, stitches, etc etc normal essential things be included in the 12?
want to be sure before i start

Toiny
09-01-2011, 06:25 AM
Any element is fine, whether themed or basic (ie buttons, stitches, flowers).

Unique means one-of-a-kind. In other words: if you have the same bow 3 times, but only recolored, it is not unique. Now, if you have 3 completely different bows, that would equal 3 unique elements.

It can get murky if you have a bow, a button and then a clustered element using that bow & that button. I would recommend staying away from this practice for this round.

Another question already, not sure if others might find this one useful as well though.

Do give credit, as required, to any Commercial Use products you use.
Should we provide credit for any CU items we use, even if they have "no credit required" terms in their TOU for the purpose of the contest?

While metals specifically aren't excluded, they would need to match the palette. That is notoriously tricky to do. The answer is yes, but be very careful!

Question about my kit:
I did a kit for Design factor (elements only) that had basically this theme and slightly different colors. Can I do an extension of that kit/theme with new elements and papers that use the challenge palette and guidelines? Essentially, I'd just use the same name/theme with all new papers and elements. Thanks for a great challenge!

09-01-2011, 11:32 AM

I've moved your layouts to a gallery just for layouts created using the contest kits from round 1, it can get a bit hard to see the kits with all the extra stuff, so a gallery just for the pages might make it easier for the designers and admin to see all the kits when it comes time to vote.

this is the layout gallery link for round 1

1 Preview is enough unless it's a requirement in that round. It's easier to see all the kits if everyone just has one preview in my opinion, but feel free to add extra previews, maybe in the layout gallery ;)

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e95/gailsullivan/paper.jpg

I would definately consider that a pattern.... its too busy for me to be a plain paper. Though I do agree that most embossing would be a plain paper... example a line around the outside, a flourish embossed, etc... not an all over pattern.

Thanks for the great challenge Toiny... I have to get through this other contest and then I will start on this one.... and am so glad you gave us inspiration because I always see pastels as baby and we all know there are enough of that.

Good luck everyone... I just hope to make it past round 1 this year!

hmm maybe Kim means changing the levels or curves on your overlay to make them lighter.
If you drag the line in the curves palette up it will lighten the layer and if you drag it down it will darken the layer.
Have a play and see what you think Diane ;)

Ambowife Designs
09-01-2011, 06:27 PM
woops you might not have curves in elements, but try dragging the right handle back towards the left on an overlay layer to see how that helps and change blend modes to help too. As long as it's light and in the same hue you should be fine as far as keeping in the palette goes :)

Yes, Tracy's got it!

PSE only has Levels Adjustment - by adjusting the levels you are, in essence, brightening or darkening... but levels gives you a lot more control than just using the Brightness/Contrast controls under the Edit menu - by using the Levels Adjustment, you can control brightness/darkness on highlights, shadows & midtones... play with the little sliders in the Level Adjustment palette and you'll be surprised how they effect the overall outcome of your design ;)

BTW - the Levels Adjustment can be found by clicking on the Black & White Circle icon in the Layers palette, then choosing Levels from the list... :)

I say it is a solid as well - gradients can also be called solid as there is no pattern.

I would definately consider that a pattern.... its too busy for me to be a plain paper. Though I do agree that most embossing would be a plain paper... example a line around the outside, a flourish embossed, etc... not an all over pattern.

Are we meant to be doing layouts as well once we've completed the kit?

Toiny
09-02-2011, 03:10 AM
Nope. No need. Usually it's the members who created a Layout and want to show the Designer what they did with their kit.

However some Designers, I do this as welll, create LO's as they design. It helps ensure the "scrapability" of the kit and works as a safeguard to make sure there are enough basic elements so that the kit is easy to work with.

On the embossed papers, even with all the actual pattern on there, I'm sticking with solid. If I'm scrapping with it, I would use the patterened papers for cutting strips & mats. The solids I use for backgrounds. The embossed would be a background before a cutting strip or mat.

You need to place it in the Color Swatch folder.
Not sure what system you are using but the basic is:
C: > Program Files > Adobe > Photoshop Elements # > Presets > Color Swatches

Then you should be able to open it in PSE via the Swatch window. :) Hope this helps!

I couldn't open the color swatches exactly the way you suggested although I found everything you said (YEAH!). PSE still wouldn't open it. In the process though I did understand how to use the color codes so I now how the colors!!!
Any suggestions from anyone on tutorials for making elements?

RE: PSE color swatches...

You don't have to put the file into the folder first, you can load the .aco or .ase file directly into PSE

Go to Edit>Preset Manager
Click the drop down and choose Swatches
Click on Load, then browse for your file
Your swatch will show in the Color Swatches palette now :)

It's much easier than copying it directly into the PSE folders ;)

nuver question :)...if you use a paper that you've created for the contest to create an element with, would that element be deemed to still be unique?

Toiny thanks for answering my other question re LO's :)

Yes, that element is unique...

The only thing that doesn't make an element unique is recoloring, so if you have a button in 6 different colors, it doesn't count as 6 elements, because they are not unique, just recolored... it would only count as 1 unique element - the same about clusters, if you have a flower, bow and foliage in your kit, then you make a clustered element out of those 3 items, the clustered element really isn't considered unique, because the pieces are included in the kit and the scrapper could make that clustered element themselves, does this make sense? The general idea is to have all different pieces because this is a mini kit... when making a full size kit w/ 30+ elements, you can include recolored & clustered elements, but for the purpose of this contest, try to come up with 12 different elements ;)

recolored elements really don't impress too much, most scrappers know how to recolor their elements to match their pages, so it is unnecessary to include multiples of the same element in different colors, a lot of customers will pass over a kit if they see too many duplicates of the same element :))

You are most welcome! I have to agree, duplicated, recolored elements are a turn off from purchasing... freebies are one thing, but if I'm paying I would skip over the kits with duplicated/recolored items ;)

...should we do seperate previews for papers and elements, or is it enough to make 1 preview for the kit.

Not sure if this was answered for you or not but if you look at Toiny's first post where she outlines the specifications of the round 1 challenge she says:
The preview must include all papers, elements, kit name and your logo.
... so that would mean, all in one. :))

Oh boy, I should have read things again today. I tossed around ideas for a few days and finally got something done. However, I forgot that part of the challenge was staying true to pale colors. I only used a couple of the colors and I used too much of the darker blue to look like a pastel kit. I really do not like pastel colors very much. Now I don't know if I should turn it in. I really like the way it turned out though. Ugh, what to do!!!

Toiny

A border would be an element, but be careful with the "unique" factor. If it is composed of existing papers & elements, in this case, it would not qualify as unique.

A full overlay, 12X12, would be considered a paper.

HTH's!

Pale colors are notoriously difficult to work with, this is part of the challenge. That doesn't mean you would be out of the running by using only the darker colors. The requirement was to stick to colors in the palette, not to all the colors. It's a toss-up.

You do have more time left on the official clock, perhaps work at throwing some paler things in? And then giveaway the darker stuff as an add-on via your blog?

Ok part of my question was answered..... I have some of the lighter colors in my papers but also alot of the darker... doesnt look like a "pastel" kit but I am sticking to the palette.... will this hurt my chances of going on to the next round? I am on limited time and it has taken me 2 days to make the 5 papers. I just want to make sure they are alright before I move on to the elements.

Next question.... I know you gave us "daybreak" as a theme but I am having a hard time putting this to paper... I let the colors lead me and I love what I have done, however, it seems so much more out of the box than I have already seen in the gallery. Is the theme something we can just let the colors let us go with?

I hope that all makes sense as I am not feeling well today and nothing seems to be coming out the way it should be.

You should have at least some paler elements and/or papers to fulfill the challenge of working with a pale palette.

The theme is a little more flexible, let it be more your inspiration than something that is holding you back.

I wish you well & feeling better soon!

Answers to questions:

No, the palette does not need to be included in the preview.
A pattern must be a whole-paper pattern, not color variation.
You will not get feedback from the judges this round, there are simply too many of you to make this feasible. We would not be able to do all of you justice.

If 90% of the paper is solid, NO pattern or very subtle almost invisible pattern, then it is considered a solid - a border around the edges does not constitute pattern, HTH :DD

Solids can be multi-colored - they can even have flourishes in corners/edges and still be considered solids, as long as the majority of the paper is patternless, I would still consider it solid -

I took a quick peek at your preview, those look like patterns to me. I must be phrasing myself wrong.

Someone help! Tracy? Kim? What am I trying to say? :l

I see, very clearly, the first 3 papers are patterned, last two are solids... maybe I'll go gather up some examples to show you all what we mean, I know with all the questions arising it's probably getting confusing, so images may work better than words here! ;) Give me a little bit to get the stuff together :DD

I'm pretty sure it was decided that it would still be considered a solid - embossing is right on that grey line, most embossed papers are subtle enough to be used as a solid... In the example that was given earlier in this thread, even though the pattern is clearly visible, I would still consider that to be solid and would most likely use the paper as a solid... sorry I can't give you a definitive answer, but I'm positive this topic will be considered when it comes time for us to vote :)

Thanks to Kakleidesigns, I found a little mistake in my kit, which I have fixed. Eeek! I hate when that happens, like right after you send an email, you notice a spelling error or something. In this case, I saved the wrong version of 3 of my elements, so I've added a link to download those elements only, if anyone is interested. Sorry about that!

Sorry for jumping in on this but I think the confusion here is because you said something about recoloring not counting. tailz has three patterned papers with the same pattern. I believe she thought you meant that was not okay.

Oh, wow. I thought I was never going to get this finished as I had to travel 350 miles on Saturday to take my son's stuff back to University in Scotland. He was only dropping it off (term doesn't start for 2 another 2 weeks), so we travelled back today, had a tyre blowout on the motorway (I'm still shaking now :O ), was told by the AA man that the car was dangerous to drive and had to quickly get 3 new tyres so we could get home!!! It turned out to be one expensive trip!

Anyhow, here's my entry for round 1:

Hi! I don't know if you got an answer yet and since time is growing short....

Yes, you create a jpeg that is 600x600 pixels at 72 dpi. Make sure you have all your papers and elements showing so you don't get disqualified. (This is the kit preview.) You can upload that like you would a layout.

For the zip file, you need to upload that to a file sharing site like 4shared.com, box.net, or megaupload.com and then post the link in the description box when you upload the kit preview that you created.

Good luck! :0)

Awesome designs in the gallery from everyone.

Thank you all for this opportunity.
(I'm so excited)
I'm a bit rusty having just come back from 2+ months vacation with no scrapping.

My take on Daybreak took off slowly. I kept thinking 'baby' for these colors. LOL
I was stuck. I started with a few papers and stalled on the elements.
I had to bring in the boys to get input. And it worked to some degree. I was now short on time...LOL...so a few of their ideas didn't make it this time round.

I hope you enjoy our take on Daybreak.

Ladies please remember to put your designer name in the name of the zip file
all files should have designername_kitname then the element, paper number

It makes it easier for us and scrappers to see who's kit it is and it will be more likely that you will get credited when scrappers post layouts with your kits too.

Oh! Question real fast - I can't believe I didn't ask this on Sunday when I decided to try and enter... Would chipboard elements that have some of the original brown chipboard on them be considered out of the color palette? I have time (just barely) to tweak, but I wanted to check with you ladies...

kimberkatt
09-05-2011, 07:42 PM
I don't think that would disqualify, some natural texture like chipboard should be okay, but Toiny did want the metals to match the palette, so if you have the time, it may be safer to tint the chipboard with one of colors in the palette... it may even make that element stand out more :)

vadkins
09-05-2011, 07:47 PM
Yeah, I thought about that. Thanks for answering. All my chipboard pieces are tinted, but I'm working in a 'shabby' style, so bits of the original brown are showing around the edges.

kimberkatt
09-05-2011, 07:50 PM
if it's just small worn bits & pieces, instead of the entire edge, then that should be fine! :))
