YOUR ASSIGNMENT

Please review the general notes and instructions in this THREAD (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9666) before you begin your assignment.

Use only this kit from JW Digiscraps, “Afternoon Delight”

In this round, you must:

1. Create a SINGLE 12X12 LAYOUT using as much of the kit as you can to promote it beautifully, while still keeping your page, including shadows and layers, BALANCED AND EYECATCHING.

2. Shadows should be consistent, all in the same direction and relative to the distance off the page that particular element would be if real.

3. Your layout should be resized to 600 x 600 pixels, 72 dpi, and no more than 120K before uploading to the gallery. Once you have uploaded your “official” entry for the week, you are not to edit it in any way once it's been placed in the gallery.

4. post a store link to the kit in your description, and you must credit the designer and kit, and provide the name of any fonts you use

5. mention any changes besides adding shadows. So if you added a bevel or glow or cropped anything, you must say so in the description area when you post your page. Please use only the tools that come with your software.

6. post your layout in the LOA Week 2 gallery and also the designer's gallery. LOA 2011: Round 2 (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1304-loa-2011-3a-round2.html)

7. post the week 2 gallery url link from the address bar back here in this thread so that we know you have posted and can go leave you some love.

NOTE -- If you have a legitimate problem getting your layout up on time, eg. computer issue or internet connection problem, or a Studio upload based problem, let us know and we may make an exception, otherwise all pages must be uploaded by the deadline.

POST DEADLINE : MIDNIGHT EST SUNDAY, September 11

POST YOUR LAYOUT IN THE LAYOUT ARTIST COMPETITION ROUND 2 GALLERY.
http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1304-loa-2011-3a-round2.html

POLL FOR VOTING : will go up in a separate thread MONDAY, September 12. ALL STUDIO MEMBERS CAN VOTE IN THIS ROUND. Voting in the final round will only be open to Studio designers and admin

POLLING CLOSES : Midnight EST on September 13

A new thread listing those who will be going on, and the new week’s assignment, will be posted on September 15. ALL CONTESTANTS MOVING ON IN THE CONTEST WILL RECEIVE THE KIT BY PM MESSAGE.

I'm going to say yes on this, make a note that you've cropped the paper to use as a mat.

And here is why -- most customers who look at your layouts expect to find exactly what you've used in the kit when they unzip their files. If you've done something to modify an element, or a paper, without mentioning it, the customer can become frustrated or disappointed especially if they loved it and thought it would be included!

Hmmm, interesting. This could be quite far-reaching. I'm really going to have to pay close attention to what I do. Glad someone asked since I wouldn't have considered this.

The back ground paper was lightened just a bit by adding paper #11 under it and lowering the opacity to 93.
Leaf was cut down in upper cluster.
Photo's were cropped.

I just realized I needed to post lay out in designers gallery also per instructions on page 1

Thanks for the chance to move on into week 2. Here is my layout for this week's challenge: http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/data/1304/theStudio-birthdaybash-layoutartist-week2.jpg

For the three papers in the background, I did some blending. The bottom paper is papers 2 and 8 with the blend mode on paper 8 changed to darken. The middle paper is papers 7 and 3 with the blend mode on paper 3 changed to overlay. The top paper is papers 13 and 5 with the blend mode on paper 5 changed to hard light. I cropped the frame to use the sides of it and I cropped the orange stitches to just use the bow off of it. I copied and then cropped the middle papers to fit the tag, enlarging them just a little to give some contrast to the tag and the papers it is sitting on. I cropped paper 2 to a shape in my software program to use for the definition of bittersweet. I used the fonts Amazone BT, Annie BTN and Arial.

Is it still acceptable to do more than one layout for round 2? In the general instructions thread, this is approved, but in the round 2 instructions, it specifies a single layout. I did 2 layouts and posted both, but would be happy to move the 2nd one to the general member gallery if only one is allowed. Just let me know! Thanks :)

What happens when you submit two layouts, your total votes are split between the two pages, instead of just being placed on one.

You can submit both, as has been mentioned, but I would consider choosing the better of the two and submit only that one.

And a reminder, to each of you, please be sure that you have followed each of the instructions in the assignment. I have noticed that several have not. Hint -- please check your descriptions.

Your layout should be resized to 600 x 600 pixels, 72 dpi, and no more than 120K before uploading to the gallery.

How strict are you with the 72dpi? I ask because the only way, in PS, to be able to make adjustments to the save in an attempt to keep it under a certain size limit (120K), you must use the 'save for the web' feature in PS. This feature saves the files at 96ppi. So, is it sufficient enough to say you want the files to be 600 pixels square and the file storage size no more than 120K?

I went ahead and posted anyway (600pixels, under 120K) - here's my layout - linked to the gallery:

Yes, and yes!

I lived in Alamogordo for about a year and half when my dad worked at Holloman AFB. Then went to college in Portales, got married there, and our daughter was born there.

you lived in Alamogordo or New Mexico???:O

Rose i'm not sure what u r doing but i always use save for web in PS and it always saves at 72 dpi. maybe its how i do it. i save my psd first. then i save my LO as a full size jpg for printing. then i open the jpg and resize it to 72dpi 600 x 600 (because it usually needs sharpening) and the save for web.

i have saved them straight from a psd and it still does 72 dpi because that is the standard. somewhere u probably have a default wrong.

Rose -- (and anyone else who is having trouble with saving) --
You can use the save for web as has been suggested. I do it slightly differently like this:
from my psd file, I select Image > Image Resize (use the keyboard shortcut of Control-Alt-I), and it brings up a little window. Change the 300 dpi to 72 (do this first), then change the height and width values each to 600 pixels. Click OK. Then Save As, jpg, and adjust the slider to reach the correct file size, and save with the file name.

rose not sure if this helps but u can try. sorry tried doing a screen shot but its not working for some reason. go to preferences. BTW i'm on CS5 so may be a bit different. PREFERENCES>UNITS AND RULERS> the little over halfway down it says NEW DOCUMENT PRESET RESOLUTIONS then there is one for printing and one for web. the web should say 72.

this is for new documents but its all i could find so i'd at least check there. it will also allow u to have better quality previews once u get the dpi down. (not that yours r bad now i just meant in general :) )

LOL what she just said. that was what i was trying to say! the only difference is i do save for web after i resize it.

Open your layout entry and on the top right, there is a button that says photo options. Click on it, you'll get a dropdown, choose edit photo.

Here is my layout for the 2nd week! I had fun, but a hard time deciding which of all the options to use. I used 5 of the 11 papers and 15 of the 31 elements, so just a little less than half of the kit. This is my granddaughter this morning, with her two constant companions.

This is the first layout that I did, but did not use for the competition. Just sharing! :((

I just realized I needed to post lay out in designers gallery also per instructions on page 1. 6. post your layout in the LOA Week 2 gallery and also the designer's gallery. I sure hope I did that right.

Is the 72dpi really important? I always save at 96dpi and so I just changed it to 72dpi, but it looks pixelated, and I am disappointed by this. I want to do it right, but I want it to look good too! P.S. I use Storybook, so I don't know how the final outcome differs from Photoshop in terms of quality.

Janet-B

I'm not familiar with Storybook, and how it compresses the information in the file. In Photoshop, the 72 dpi is pretty clean. I can't tell what the dpi is, once the page is posted, so please don't worry about it at this point. Just make sure that your links, and description has everything needed.
