Congratulations again! That was a very tough challenge and you deserve an extra round of applause for moving on. The first round gave you a very difficult palette to work with, a very difficult kit to preview. This round that part is easier. You are being given a preview template, and you must use this preview template to preview your kit.

wonderful challenge, TYSM Toiny, but I have a question, only one little confusion:

You are also being given a name “Summer Afternoon”, which you must use as your kit name & title. Summer afternoon is also your kit theme. However, the palette is completely up to you! Let us see how a good palette makes the kit.

The preview template does not include a template for the kit title, part of your challenge is to make a fantabulous, eye-catching kit title. I have to say, with every kit I make this is always one of my biggest challenge.

The tittle of the kit must be “Summer Afternoon”, so when you say here:
part of your challenge is to make a fantabulous, eye-catching kit title
, you are talking about a second tittle ?
OMG, I think you are talking about the font, the way the tittle should be expose?
did I understand it right?
TYSM, hugs, Karen...and sorry for asking

Toiny
09-08-2011, 06:18 AM
Hmmm let me try to answer this Karen.

The kit name is : Summer Afternoon. On a preview, when you add the kit name, this is the title. I want to see how good you make the "Summer Afternoon" words look on the preview.

Is that better?

should we include our color swatch on the preview so you know we kept with the colors?

and also - alpha counts as 1 element, right?

There is no need to include your swatch on the preview. That is a matter of personal preference, not a requirement.

And, yes, an Alpha is 1 element.

Toiny: I have a question ...

Create exactly 6 papers, either jpg or png<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p> Create 20 elements <o:p></o:p>

Include at least 1 cluster<o:p></o:p>
The cluster does not have to be unique
can we create more than 20 elements ?
if not, is the cluster #21 or one of the 20
assuming the 20 are to be unique like in challenge 1, true?
sorry to be kinda dense this morning

Hi Anita, no worries! I need two pots of coffee to get me going...

I left it a little vague so people could make it more their own. But what I mean is:

At least 20 elements, including the cluster (so maybe 19 + 1 would be better?)
You may have more, it is not required
They do not need to be unique
You can use a button, a flower and then layer that button & flower for a 3rd element.
You may recolor 1 button, 6 different times & that can be part of your 20 (but I wouldn't recommend that)
A little better?

The way i *read* this, was that it was part of the 20, and that it was 20 elements, didn't specify that they all had to be unique.

What's the Verdict? ;)

hehe! posted at the same time :D thanks for the super clarification! ♥

On the part about recoloring - I agree with Toiny, recoloring the same button several times is not very appealing. If you want to offer a red, green, and blue button, make them a little different, one square, one round, one with some polka dots etc. It gives variety and choice of color at the same time. That's my tip for the day LOL

Could somebody define cluster for me? I think of a cluster as 3-4 elements (simple elements or layered elements) together when I scrap.

When I design, I think of a layered piece...such as a frame with flowers on it or a flower, button, leaves & string making a more complex flower element...

I googled summer afternoon and found the perfect photo to get a palette from..i have almost all my papes done..heehee...

Toiny
09-08-2011, 12:49 PM
Yes. LOL. A cluster is several elements composing a more complex element. Frequently a frame, but also borders, corners, page spray's or even just a flower swag.

You can see good, varied examples, in our "cluster" section of the store:

Love the name and summer aaah bliss we're coming out of a very long cold wet winter and the spring buds are starting to show so that means summer is only just around the corner...just hope it's not our usual stinker :)

Got me pallette and all the questions I had have now been answered too thanks Toiny I don't need to ask now :) off now to get stuck into it :)

Liz off course you can and tailz, I didn't think of that, sorry Toiny...but they are just colors that I take out from very known images of the web, so...is not that I blended and created colors. But I did that in my own palette, I took colors from 4 different images, all from seasides in my country from last summer, at the beginning I had like 20 colors and didn't want to get rid of any of them, you know you get so paranoid , I know I do, and then I started taking out until I had 9 pastels which was what I wanted, I wanted pale pastels and a very shiny green in mine, so I guess I finally made it, but if you ask me, Summer is not my favorite season to design about, I love the green, the foliage, the flowers (I am a huge fan of creating flowers, love, love flowers) but I adore grays, and teals, pale colors or golds and browns from autumn, when I design in strong colors, I am out of my comfort zone, and is very scary.

It had to have EXACTLY 6 papers, but somewhere along the line it was said you could do more than 20 elements.

yeah towards the beginning of this thread Toiny has said we can have more than 20 elements some so far have gone just over some more than just over...I went 23 only coz I felt I needed to even up the colours a little...very hard when most of my kits have around 70 elements and 30+ papers lol...looking great so far...a wide variety of colours...we're going to make the judges work hard again I think :)

Toiny
09-10-2011, 04:34 AM

Okay - I made my cluster - two actually - they are mostly made up of other parts of the kit. So if I used a flower both in the cluster, and I am giving it individually, does it need to appear in my preview as an individual element as well as part of the cluster? I know you said everything needs to be on the preview, but it would technically be there as part of the cluster. I just don't want the same flower to show 4-5 times because it's in the cluster and an individual piece.

littlespooky
09-11-2011, 09:27 AM
vickilyn you just need to show the flower in the cluster if you are not using it individually.

I've been having a problem with PS and now I'm worried it's going to slow me down more (I've already been greatly slowed down by my own indecision! :grrr:).

I can't figure out how this is happening so if anyone has had this experience and knows how I can fix it, please let me know!

The problem is this: my colors keep changing! 8|

I know, I know, sounds odd but they are. I have my palette saved and loaded as an .aco file. And in the course of designing, I keep noticing that my greens are changing and I have to continually reload the .aco file - very inconvenient and annoying. :(

So, I'm making slow progress and because of other 'life' events, I'll most likely be submitting mine at the very last minute.

It just gets weirder and I've still so much to do yet :grrr:.

Check out this screenshot (http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll10/ladyofthethorns/Misc/ScreenshotOfColorChanging.jpg) of my preview in progress.

All I did was move the items you see in the preview on the right side to the preview template we were given, on the left. The colors are different! You can especially see it in the leaves and the second paper from the left, it looks more blue than green on the left side than it does on the right. :(

If my elements all match when I'm finished, I think it'll be a miracle... if I finish... :l I might be up all night tonight.

Okay, this is a question that someone more experienced might have to answer. Could it be a variation becuase of the different color profiles within photoshop? If the preview file was created in one RGB profile and she is working in another one?? Does that make sense? It wouldnt explain the changes in the swatch file, but could it answer why the elements look different on the two previews?

If someone wants to peak at what I am talking about go to edit>color settings in PS.

I had thought of that myself but I don't think that's the case because I usually get a warning message when I try to copy something with into a document where the color modes are different. I've also verified that I'm working in RGB 8bit mode, the same as the template. But, like you said, we may need someone more experienced with the inner workings of the color mode stuff.

Thanks for offering that information though, maybe this will trigger a thought in someone else's head. ;)

Also, maybe try dragging the template into a paper from your kit to keep color integrity? And then adding the other papers & elements.

Hmm maybe the color profile, I always work in sRGB IEC61966-2.1
you can assign that profile by going to edit>assign color profile

also check your general preferences tab for your color picker, HUD color picker

other than that maybe get someone to make a palette image for you so you can use the eyedropper
tool till you work out what the problem is.

have you tried resetting your preferences and all the usual things that you try when photoshop
becomes unstable?

Okay Rose, I did a little test,
I opened the psd template which is in color profile sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (on the right in the image below)
Then I created a new document with the color profile of Adobe RGB (1998)

there is an obvious difference. And I didn't get a warning when I moved the files by dragging them to the new document. So maybe it's that hun

Just a question: Does the preview have to show ALL your elements? Suddenly mine looks so busy ... and there is only 20 elements on.

Toiny
09-12-2011, 05:56 AM
Yep. It's part of the requirements, and definitely a challenge.

Try shrinking your elements down even more. Just going to 90% of the current size will make a huge difference. Remember to take care to proportion things properly, ie: a button should not be bigger than a flower.

sometimes you can cluster your elements on your profile and still show everything to make it look less busy. Does that make sense?

Yep, I think that's it, I was investigating a bit too and come up with that being the reason. I took some training at Lynda.com and I learned alot about color and best settings, etc. (not all of it stuck though, LOL... good thing I took notes ;) ). Anyhoo... it's too late for me to truly fix it for this kit but I'll be more aware for the next one.

I'm a "lefty" too LOL

One thing I noticed a long time ago in a set of shadow styles I bought and sort of "adopted" when designing is adding a small outer glow to my element in addition or in place of the drop shadow. I think helps to make the direction less important. If I make an element with a left shadow and you shade to the right, the internal shading on the element might look funny. Using an outer glow adds depth to the element without mucking up the shadowing. I know its not the same thing but I wanted to share anyway :D

Just finished looking through all of your lovely creations! Great job this time, you make the voting hard! Toiny will make the call on how many get through to the next round, but it will be in the neighborhood of 20 :D

I was wondering that myself - if it would still be 20, or just cut in half again.

The answer to this is yes, it will still be 20 going through. The 9 or so who did not get there kits in on time will be eliminated, and 11 others. But remember, if you don't make it you can still join in on the 2nd chance competition for a chance to win a scholarship to the Digi-Design Academy! Good luck all!

Ah, I was out of the house most of the day today, with friends and running some errands... wanted to buy winter boots (mine leak :grrr: ) but didn't find anything... did find some really cute and comfy shoes though. :l It was really GREAT to be away from the computer all day and have my thoughts otherwise occupied.

I missed the time deadline...
Gosh that's so sad, Hun, your kits is so sweet too. I'm sorry you didn't make it in time but it's awful sweet of you to share the kit here anyway. :XX
... i'm going to Maine this weekend to look at a house!
The house next door to me is up for sale; you could move in and we could share scrap talks every day! LOL
hehe.. i'm kinda wishin i had a TARDIS .. that way i could just skip the waiting! lmao! ;)
:l I love that idea... I wonder how many people who've read that post would know what a TARDIS is... :DD
ACK! I just got notification from DropBox that my account was suspended because of the downloads. I had to hurry up and change over to MediaFire and fix the links on both kits.

What do you guys do when MediaFire and DropBox kick you out? Do you buy more room??
I've never had a problem with MediaFire and I've had as many as 1400 downloads on some kits I did for blog trains. MediaFire is the only one I use.

Are you sure about this? I thought that the 2nd chance competition was for those eliminated in the 1st round only. I'm fairly sure that's the way it went last year... seems it would be unfair to those in it from the start to have the numbers competing increase each round.

Rose, That would be an awesome idea, except the huz is working for a company in Maine..so, that'd be an extraordinarily long drive. ;) plus we aren't in a position to buy unfortunately :(

I was wondering as well if anyone else would get the TARDIS reference ;) *snicker*

In other news, i just bought ArtRage 3 PRO! got it for just about 50% off! ^_^ My trial ended so i managed to have *just enough* funds to purchase it! Now i can expand on the types of things i can do digitally ^_^ better glitters, nifty doodles, etc. ^_^

I used to have premium in mediafire and everybody was so happy, specially my CT, then I started to have issues, couldn't upload anything, same happened to Dropbox, and I just hate 4 shared, so I guess is something regional, because some people from some countries can't access to a few hosting files like megaupload, mediafire, etc...so now, I found a new one called FileHat.com which works wonderful and fast for me, but not for others, so is such a mess, I just purchased my own web host today so I can have my own stuff for a few days and direct links, etc...is cheaper at the end when you do the maths.

I got tired of all the download sites and just bought hosting. Its fairly inexpensive and I was able to set up a CT forum too. Which is a blessing since my shops seem to be closing on me about once a year! Sugar Moon and I share our forum and the idea is that sales from our collab kits will cover the cost of the hosting.

Drop box will not allow you the kind of downloading that takes place when you host a freebie there. They will suspend your account. I use dropbox with my CT, half of them also have dropbox so we share the folder rather than download and I generate download links for the others through dropbox and that doesn't seem to be a problem, maybe 2-3 downloads a day sporadically. Freebies will get hundreds of downloads a day and dropbox does not like that! box.net is another hosting option.

Have any of you tried Skydrive (http://explore.live.com/skydrive) through Windows live yet? I have a hotmail account, so I use Skydrive all the time! It's free, it's direct link/download, really easy to use and most of the downloaders I've heard feedback from really like it! The only thing I don't like about it is it doesn't keep track of downloads, so you have to use a URL shortener service, like bit.ly to keep track of clicks... but it's fairly easy to convert the links... :)

oh I am such a huge fan of TV series, I saw one chapter of DR.Who and to be honest it bored me to death, haha, but you don't have a clue on how many TV shows I watch, and mostly on line, my favorites which I watch on TV with my daughter are:
Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives
But I watch: True Blood, breaking bad, The Closer, Dexter, Bones, The Glades, Rizzoli and Isles, necessary Roughness, Falling Skies, etc, etc, etc, etc...I am also downloading new ones (the pilots) right now, hahaha, oh and I also got sticked with my daughter on Switched at birth, and off course don't forget American Idol when it comes...I am a movie and TV series wickipedia, I am an insane fan of everything in screen, that's why my son is a communicator specialized in digital edition ...and off course big screen. He studied what I couldn't, and he makes me really proud.

So maybe it's that hun

http://www.ambowife.com/chats/colorprofile_differences.JPG

I'm not sure if I thanked you for helping look into this for me so, in case I forgot, thank you Tracy. :)

I did however, want to mention that Toiny's original template was not actually using the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 color profile, it didn't have an embedded profile at all (see image below) and I think that, as well as using various CU products with varying color profiles is where my problems started.

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll10/ladyofthethorns/Misc/ColorProfles.jpg

Also, you mentioned in an earlier post that you use sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and I wanted to give you some information about it that I learned; you may wish to switch to Adobe RBG... I took some training by Deke McClellan at Lynda.com (I can provide you with is web site url if you want) and during the training I made some notes about color settings. My notes indicate that he referred to this color setting as a 'consumer' color space but that he recommended using Adobe RGB over that one. His reason was that Adobe RGB has a larger color space then the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 and is therefore better when it comes to printing, he said (I quote him here) the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 'a very small color space which is based on old, rinky-dink, monitor colors'.

If you find this information useful and think it would be best posted elsewhere in the forum, please feel free to move it.

thanks Rose. I might copy this to ask the other designers here what one they use and why, should be an interesting endeavor LOL. I'm pretty sure I started using that profile because that's what most kits I downloaded from stores were created in. Following the rest of the sheep I guess LOL

when I create I usually check that the item is not out of gamut, even though it usually doesn't make much difference. And I always though printers printed in CMYK but that's a mode not a profile,

It's confusing rofl!!
but thank you so much for following up with this hun

Yep confusing for sure!

With regards to gamut, you should be aware that if there is NO embedded color profile (as was the case with Toiny's template) then some colors may be indicated as out of gamut when they are not out of gamut with the sRGB or RGB settings. That was the case for me when I was experiencing the color shifting problem. I created a safe gamut color palette but when I moved them into Toiny's template, some of the colors appeared out of gamut. :l I was ready to pull out my hair in the end!

Like with most things, one has to weigh all the variables and make a 'best choice' decision for one's own situation. Here are some links you (and others) may find interesting:

THIS (http://www.printernational.org/rgb-versus-cmyk.php) one just talks simply about the difference between RGB and CMYK.
The following 3 explain the differences between RGB and sRGB and provide debates as to which is best... LOL, might help, might confuse more. :l

I think I bought the same one, well I am really not sure, here is mine: [email protected] from Dallas or something, it wasn't cheap, I mean is $4.50 a month + the host name if you want it, so it is like $118 for 24 months which is less than $5 per month and you don't pay again in 2 years, so that sounded like a very good deal for me, but a friend had to help me to set the FTP and to get the links, but now I have a web site with my name and I don't even know what to do with it, I am a huge 0 in HTML, and I won't learn because I tried once and I shut myself , I couldn't get it, I have a free forum for my CT but I would love to use this site for that and the gallery, it would be great, but for all that I have to pay someone, I mean, I know how to make my own blog layouts, web sets but not clue on how to set them, anybody knows about someone who offers this service and not charge too much?
Because after paying the host and some other stuff, my pay pal =0 so it means I am totally broke until next payment comes.
And yes Kimberly, my son uses Skydrive, but he is a MSN, windows live user, I don't, one thing I don't do is chatting, I must be one of those very rare cases, but I hate chatting over MSN, yahoo, FB, you name it, I am more an email person.
and 4 shared, OMG, downloading your kits girls to make layouts from 4 shared made me want to scream, (but I did wait for each of your kits) I had like 350 seconds to wait, is crazy.

I could feel my ears burning, Kim.. lol!! :-)

my two cents from the DDA... I suggest the use of sRGB, (simply because it's an industry standard and cross-program compatible) I've read alot on this topic and most of what i run across as far as printwork (...our digital scrapbooking supplies will be printed eventually :) states that sRGB is the best to use.. I would say especially since we are selling the products to a wide variety of consumers who no doubt may be opening and altering our files in another program (like PSP, memorymixer, etc.) and then turning around and printing them. If we were creating the artwork from our own photoshop pc's and then printed it immediately it might be a different story of course, but since there are so many possibilites of other programs using our files, i would say to be on the safe side sRGB is best.
