Yay! You are on Round 3. Except… Round 3 will be the toughest round. This round is our No CU round. Everything must be created by you, whether by camera, scanner, hand, computer or a combination of all. You may use any tools that came with your computer or with your photo-editing software. You may not use plug-ins (eye candy, filter forge, art rage, etc.)

We are originally a heritage, genealogy scrapbooking site, and we still have some lovely vintage products perfect for those preserving those memories. It is no longer all we are, but this round our theme gives a nod to both our heritage and contest theme. This week you will create a mini kit around “The Evening News” and your palette core is provided.

http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/palettes/thestudio_NDC_week3.jpg (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/palettes/thestudio_NDC_week3.aco)
Photoshop Swatch (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/palettes/thestudio_NDC_week3.aco)
It is up to you to add a splash of color to the palette. In keeping in the spirit of this theme, I strongly encourage vintage hues.

Round 2 Rules

Theme: Evening News
Palette: Vintage Hues

You must follow the theme
You must use at least 3 of the core palette colors
You may add as many colors as you like
Your kit may be named anything
Create exactly 4 papers, either jpg or png
Create exactly 10 elements
Include a terms of use (TOU) within your zip file(s).
The preview must be 600X600px, 72dpi, and a jpg file. Please post only one preview.
The preview must include all papers, elements, kit name/title and your logo.
Previews must be posted in the Annual Next Designer Contest Gallery: NDC 2011: Round 3 (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1314-ndc-2011-3a-round-3.html)
Evening News due September 19, 2011 by 23:59 EST.
Include your download links with your preview in the gallery.
Links must be available until September 20, 2011. It is appreciated if they are available until October 1, 2011.

You may not use any commercial use/designer resource products in the creation of your mini-kit. You may use more than one photo-editing/vector program to create your kit. You may not use plug-ins. Please do not break any copyright laws in this competition--you will be disqualified if you do.

All previews must be posted in the Annual Next Designer Contest Gallery: NDC 2011: Round 3 (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/gallery/g1314-ndc-2011-3a-round-3.html)
Evening News. Please post your download links there as well. You may use any outside host including 4shared/rapidshare/boxnet etc. You must use ZIP files only. Do not use RAR. You may blog all you like about the contest.

Voting will be done by theStudio Design & Admin teams only. Round 3 kit will be due September 19, 2011 by 23:59 EST. Round 3 results will be posted September 22, 2011 by 6:00 am EST.

I have worked hard to make these rules as clear and easy to understand as possible. However, if you have any questions please post here or PM me. Round 3 does come with a reward for every winner. There is a phenomenal CU gift basket in here for all the make it to Round 4, the finals.

Good luck!

What about styles and brushes? Would those be considered CU?

Ambowife Designs
09-15-2011, 06:03 AM
Nothing that is cu is allowed, unless you created it yourself for cu.
So brushes, styles, overlays, anything not created by you is NOT allowed.
hope that makes it a little clearer hun and thanks for asking ;) good luck!

Much clearer - and harder!! So truly ONLY what came with the program! Well...I think there were some shapes & brushes, etc in there....guess I will be finding out! LOL :) I guess that's why it's a contest!! Okie dokie - off to think!

I was afraid to come see what the next challenge was based on a couple of comments made in the Round 2 winners thread about it being tough but oh, Oh, OH, I totally LOVE this challenge. Love anything vintage. And, since I prefer to design with minimal use of CU this will be fun! :DD

Good luck everyone!

ok so first question, can we use stock photos and extract them? or is that considered a CU item?

A-Manda Creation
09-15-2011, 07:48 AM
Quick question, can we use styles that we have created but the style was created using a CU item?

For instance, I have glitter styles I have made, but I used a glitter overlay to create the style?

I am thinking no, but thought I would make sure :)

Looking forward to the challenge!

kimberkatt
09-15-2011, 08:30 AM
Stock Photos = CU Item, sorry Rachel - but you can take your own photos and extract from them :))

Regarding the style, I would have to say that it would be considered a CU item, since you used someone elses overlay to help you create it, sorry!

This round is meant to see what you can do without any "help" from anyone else, so if you didn't create it from scratch, you can't use it! PS & PSE come equipped with some great shapes/styles/brushes/patterns/textures, don't be afraid to use them and play, play, play! Filters are my most favorite thing to play with, layer styles being my second... you'll be amazed what you can create with just the tools in your program! :))

I'm on a hunt for some good tutorials out there, I'll be back with some links for you all! ;)

oh rats, lol i dont always use extracted items but i have a few that i've extrated myself, i was just looking for options to help the design process move faster since i have a few other required kits to make for my store, but no worried i can make and use my other vector templates too :) this will be fun

Tuts would be great. I had a hard time creating my paper textures with the brushes only in Photoshop. I have a fantastic camera and a decent scanner but my stuff still comes out a bit blurry. Is it okay to use the basic shapes that came with photoshop?

I don't mind the extracting and enjoy looking for things to use but it's getting the photos clear or the scans right that I have trouble with.

Ironically, I am finishing reading the book "The Help" right now (by Kathryn Sockett) which is set in the 1960's. I have some good ideas if I can put them down.

it is absolutely okay to use those shapes! Anything that came standard with your program may be used, so put those shapes/styles/patterns/textures/filters to use here!

I just posted a ton more links to tuts in the Tutorial thread (http://www.digitalscrapbookingstudio.com/forum/showthread.php?p=106450&posted=1#post106450) ;) :DD

QUESTION:

Katlen124 asked this question about the challenge in the 2nd chance thread:

can it be newsy or heritage or does it have to be both news and heritage?

Since the 'theme' is 'evening news' I'm thinking that's suppose to be the primary topic but done in an 'vintage' style, but, before I start, I am curious how her question will be answered.

kimberkatt

Rose, I interpreted it the same... incorporate the Theme: Evening News w/ a Vintage type feel to it.... I'm pretty sure this is what Toiny is wanting from this round ;)

It's T's B-day today, so unsure if she will be around too much, so I'll try to help out with questions as much as possible! :DD

If your scans/images are just a tad blurry in a few spots, duplicate the image and run the sharpen filter that is in your program (in PSE it's under Enhance->Auto Sharpen) this adds a crispness that often hides a few minor blurry spots. Adjust the opacity or blend it with the original layer for a final look.

Hope that helps someone! Good luck all!

Quick answer, and a huge thank you to Tracy & Kim for handling things so well, it' "Evening News" that is a requirement. Vintage is just my desire, a want, a strong suggestion, and the core palette was created to push you in that direction. Vintage is not a requirement. Making all your own CU is hard enough without forcing the style on you.

Good luck guys!

OMG, I just finished my kit but I realized I did it all wrong, I use the exact color palette, I re made all my styles, my brushes, my overlays, my extractions which I don't like too much to do thinking and being so exciting about the word Vintage which is my favorite, and I create tons of CU vintage stuff, but now..."Evening News"...I don't quite understand what is this about?
TV news?, newspaper?
what exactly is Evening news?
I am sorry, it must be the language barrier, because I understand the phrase but not sure about the meaning, can u help me please?
OMG, so I will get some sleep and restart later all over again, buahhhhhh

(((karen))) It is okay!

The Evening News does refer to the tv sending of the news at night. But it can be any "news". So newspaper would be perfect.

Do add at least one more color to the palette. And play a little with it, your skill is more important than the theme.

i have a question about using fonts. for one of my elements i need to put text on it. it is okay to use the default fonts that came with photoshop correct, is there a way i can figure out which fonts are ps default fonts cause at the moment i have tons of fonts cause i am a fontaholic!?????!

Okay one question that may be obvious, but I just want to make sure. Is it okay to scan something that I didn't create - like an old newspaper, postcard, or vintage image and use that? Since I didn't technically create it - but it's not copyrighted - is that permissible to use since I am scanning it and using it in a new way?

Yes, me too... I've no idea how to determine which fonts came installed on my computer and with the software programs I have that use fonts, no idea how to find the ones that I installed.

Does anyone have any suggestions for us or maybe has a URL to places that list what comes standard with different versions of windows and software programs like PS and PSP?

Scanning is a-ok! But yes, it needs to be something that is not copyrighted. Like a newspaper or vintage image. This is done frequently, just be careful.

Creative Suite actually refers to a collection of software programs by Adobe which includes Photoshop, that is what the CS stands for in CSPS; the most currant release of Photoshop is CSPS5.5 (which you can get 'standard' or 'extended' - extended includes 3D capabilities). You don't necessarily have to purchase the entire suite of products to get it, it can be purchased by itself.

There are many designers using it. I do (I upgraded from PSE7), and yes :)), actions, styles, brushes all work with it.

I hope that answers your question. :)

LOL - no it doesn't because I'm an idiot!

I recently got MS EXPRESSION Suite, not Creative Suite....I need it to school and was actually able to get it free - it runs for about $350. As I am in school for Web Designer, I was thinking I might be able to design my kits with it too.

question about content of elements... i'm using labels with different sayings on them - does each label count as 1 element or are they collectively 1 element?

When I do wordstrips etc, I usually just count them as one element. Same if I have the same/similar flower in different colors, or any other element that has only been re-colored (or provided in original colors but very similar in style ;)).

I'm guessing that will be how Toiny will go, but maybe Tracy or another admin can confirm?

Toiny addressed a similar question I've quoted her below. I would say they are counted as 1 element each, she doesn't want more than 10 png elements

It is exactly 10. On this round we are being picky. Please leave it out. I'm sorry.

Is an alphabet still considered one element if we wanted to include one? It has been previously, but I wanted to check.

i hope so or it would be a really small alpha :D

I forgot to ad the color I added to the palette, but at last I decided to stick with the pale tones (which I adore)and my added color was just a pale violet, so sorry I forgot to mentioned it in the description, I hope is fine anyway.

Karen, I totally second that quote, I changed my mind so many times when I started to work with this kit, my first choice was something very similar about the theme of your fabulous kit, I made a kit based in my grandparent's and all their sisters, brothers, parent's, cousins and so many images I have about their looses in the Holocaust, but it was such a sad kit, because it was about also letters, but letters of despair, asking for survivors, and knowing they lost so much family, so then I completly changed my mind and started a whole new one based in my own roots, my country, old newspapers in Uruguay and stuff I collected a long time ago when I had a great camera, now I don't have one, so it was very hard for me and quiting was on my thoughts, but then I realized I didn't need the camera, I just had to play with what I already created even when it was old and I hate it, and make something new, so TYSM for sharing this, I was feeling really blue since this round started, so TYSM again.

Kaklei, I hope you will keep your Holocaust kit together, and make it available to buy somewhere on the web. The horrors of war are a part of all of our history, and although is is sad and depressing, many of us have family stories to tell of that time, and of course, no photos. The survivors were lucky to keep the bare necessities.

In war, everyone looses.

I am loving all of the kits so far during this contest, and wish all of the contestants the best of luck!!

Oh Hun, I deleted most of it, but I made a promise to my parent's long time ago to make a really good one , so I promise I will make one, the problem is that I would like to make it as real as possible and that means with Yiddish word art , lyrics, sayings, songs, and also a lot from Poland, Germany and the countries my family scape to which are Uruguay, Argentine, Israel and their traditions, so is a real mix of stuff that I have to order property, but I will, I promise.

That should be perfectly fine.... I'm thinking she wants a vintage feel, but not required to have actual vintage "stuff" to use... age the paper once you apply the overlay and you should be good to go! ;)

which program do you use Hun?
if you use Photoshop, is very fun and easy to play with lines and effects that Photoshop has, like you make a wider line in preset shapes, just a straight one from one side to the other of the page, then you can cut in 4 or 5 parts or duplicate the same line a few times, and you ad a different effect to each part, like swirl, etc (in deform tools) and then you go and rotate, wrap, play with each layer until you like the shape , and then you can apply one of your papers to the swirl and ad a soft bevel, texture, etc.
I am so sorry, I am terrible explaining how to do something, but that's what I usually do to create most of my stuff, shapes and cutting of and layering, etc. The tutorials will guide you to a specific kind of swirl, so that's why I don't follow them any more, playing with your program and your spontaneous ideas is the best way, the worst thing that could happen is that you don't like it and you re do it again, you can also record your steps in an action so you can see later what to change , just an idea, but I am sorry I feel it won't help you much, and if you are looking for tuts, just google Photoshop tutorials, and you will find plenty.

Be careful ladies, you can't just scan any newspaper, it has to be old and cu allowed.
I'm sure if I scanned the paper from today there would be some infringement to that.

If you want vintage paper try an old book store, they have lots of books and old papers that are now out of print or public domain. I bought an old dictionary from 1897, it has an old crossword that someone used as a bookmark and it was from 27th July 1932. funny the things you find eh!!

Ambowife Designs
09-18-2011, 10:58 PM
to make your swirl I would draw it and then scan it, then trace over it in your program. be sure to check that the edges are smooth before you add anything to it to pretty it up too :)

you could also try using some shapes and then after you rasterise the shape layer you can erase the parts you don't want and build a unique swirl that way

Yes Karen, I would love to see what you come up with for this kit. As with what Joanne said too. War has affected all of our families in one way or another. My family was not directly affected by the Holocaust but for some reason, it resonates deep in my mind. I get a heavy heart whenever I hear the stories, but it is also a reminder that it could happen again if we don't change things.
My dad's family originally came from Denmark. In the small fishing village in the north where my family lived (and some still do), they hid Jews in the attic of the church and then took them on boats at night to Sweden across the sea. I am very proud to know my family did what they could during that time.

Whatever you come up with, I know will be beautiful!

Okay, I finally uploaded mine. This round has definitely given me the most anxiety about my kit. I had it all planned out with a really great theme but my camera would not cooperate so I had to switch gears. I have been waiting to upload it. I guess I though it would magically get better by itself :)
Anyway here is what I came up with, it is called Informed.
I love neutral pages with one splash of color. I decided to keep most of it with with palette colors and add just a few things with color and pattern so they will jump off the page when they are used. Plus since it is such a small kit it gives it more variety to have it mostly neutral. I hope I got that across since the colors are not intertwined throughout the kit.

Regarding the Newspaper thing:

is a TV listing considered under copyright? It's public information and I thought public information was okay? I know you can't plagiarize the contents of an article, but using it for design purposes as a picture should be allowed, no? Copyright gets more and more confusing every time I try to understand it! :P LOL!

jmdt1129

Regarding US copyrights, check out this link. It's geared toward genealogy, but I think the basic info is applicable. http://www.pddoc.com/copyright/genealogy_copyright_fundamentals.htm

Basically, facts cannot be copyrighted, but the original expression can (the creative layout of the facts) - not sure if TV listings are creative?? Also, if ancestry.com or genealogybank, etc digitize an old document or newspaper, I believe that they own the copyright to the digitized image even though the original is public.

Then again, there is also fair use...

Ambowife Designs

I just wouldn't use anthing that is in print now.
so many things like names and images in a newspaper are unusable simply because the person or thing in the writing or image is copyrighted. for example advertising, you couldn't use a page with advertising on it in case that logo or name in the ad is copyrighted. You just have to be careful is all I am saying. I choose to play it safe and not use anything new when it comes to stuff like newspapers and books. If it's an old paper you're pretty safe but today's paper I wouldn't use.

Just another note and then that's my last word on it LOL...
I don't want you all running out and changing your kits, you worked so hard. Please know that I am not going to go hunting down newspapers to see if every word in an overlay is okay to use, only obvious things are going to make me do a search. Like if you use a Newspaper with an advertisement for disney on it or something as obvious as that.

I am curious though Tracy, what exactly do you mean by 'cu checking'???

Probably checking the quality of any CU pieces you may want to use for your kits... it really does help to make sure you are starting with good quality pieces to build upon instead of realizing after you put all that hard work into it, that it's blurry at 100% and you can't use it... a major thing to check, especially with CU freebies, is to check the resolution, there are tons of CU freebies out there made at 72dpi and are either difficult to use or unusable altogether... :)

I thought CU wasn't allowed this round??? I'm just following this designer challenge, as I love to see how people are stretched to create. [and I've DL some cool stuff this round especially]. thank you.
I've had plenty of experience QC'ing CU "stuff" and some was not what I expected.
It also it amazes me how some CU stuff gets a bit of a tweak and all of a sudden it appears as a new 'originaly' thingy...

yes, quality check...does any of you use the quality check action?
I do sometimes with my overlays and extractions but I am never sure if they are OK, so I end up flattening the overlays into papers and putting aside my extracted elements to use for layering, brushes, etc. I am always so scared about jagged, and stray pixels mostly, those are my own demons. And I never, ever use CU freebies, only buy resources from CU designers I really trust, even though there were times I had to convert the item to 300dpi because it was not only at 72 but 96 or whatever and sometimes the real shadows they ad to the elements are not good and that's another issue, shadows must be perfect if you ad them , I think is better not to put shadows just in case, but that's just my point of view...and about teen agers, I have a grown man of 24 that was much tidier when he was 15 than now, he drives me crazy..but, his room, his place, his own income, I don't cross that line.

aaah So Tracy are you giving us a clue that CU will be allowed next round :l

Back to the newspaper bit, I know I know :D it's been done a too much but the newspaper section I used was some old classifieds for house sales/rentals and it was from a newspaper in the early 60's so chances are most of the houses have probably been bulldozed and I know for sure that the paper isn't even in existance lol

The hard part re copyright is also the fact that different countries have different rules regarding it. Australian copyright is slightly different than other countries.

Loving those last few kits that have appeared since last night...good luck to everyone and now the hard part again....I hate the waiting :'(:'(

I agree with what Rachel said at the beginning - when you get the kit done early - the waiting is just longer!!! It's like - you know the waiting doesn't really begin until Monday - so it's like 2 waiting games......

LOL no it wasn't a clue but I don't think Toiny would give you two rounds as tough as this one has been :w

Have fun waiting ladies. Maybe you should all go to the games forum and play while you wait, or go and chat to eachother in the chat room, it's open all the time :)

With anything and copyright always err on the side of caution, if in doubt, don't use it. That's my motto rofl!!

but re your 60's newspaper, that should be fine I'd say. ;)

Something odd going on... I was just looking at the kits submitted for the 2nd change group but was not given the option to leave a comment on any of them. :(

I can leave comments in the NDC gallery but not there. Anyone from admin in here can advise me on that?

.... uh oh, I hope I hadn't been shut out because I tried to share my cookies. :l

No sleep? Oh, that's not good, means you get to stay nervous for longer... why not drink a nice, hot cup of camomile tea, put your feet up and read a good book to get your mind off the contest? Or, LOL, read a boring one so it will put you to sleep :DD
