Rootsweb

www.rootsweb.com this is a great place to start, I did. They may be affilited with ancestry, but the site is free and has a great search engine. I started by finding someone in my grandmothers family on this site that had already done a ton of research and was willing to share. I think they are a second cousin twice removed or some such. Also some of the software for research reallly does help organize it and you can add photos into a scrapbook so you can see your ancestors. I have Family Tree Maker and love it. They also usually come with a years subscription to one of the sites.

Hi,

This is another good resource site. I have found a lot of information at Rootsweb. One of my sisters and I also use Family Tree. We can share files that way.

The mailling lists at rootsweb are awesome. Surname, State, County, Organization and special interest ones. They also host the US (and world) GenWeb pages which are great sites for "local" resources and data.

Via rootsweb I have found tons of cousins and resources for my family history.

Wow - rootsweb is awesome. Found my Mother's lineage and see she had a sister I knew nothing about. Unfortunately the sister died at about 18 months of age when my Mother was about 6 years old.

Thanks for sharing this site - I have ben able to find some very interesting info.
