I recommend "The Non-Designer's Type Book" by Robin Williams. Of course it's not really THAT Robin Williams, but it might as well be, because the book is written in a very light, up-beat style and by "non-designer" she really means "non-academic." She has some terrific tips for font selection, mixing different type styles and weights, and the use of pull quotes, all of which help elevate type into Word Art.
