Ayla is the main character in the "Clan of the Cave Bear" series, aka Earths Children, by Jean M. Auel. There are now 5, *blush*, and I'm reading the last one "The Painted Caves". They are very big, very heavy books but I thoroughly enjoy all the details, especially the healing through plants/holistically that's a huge part of the books.
