Files marked "Index" ?

Is anyone familiar with image files that open in PS with (Index) after the name? I find I can't add these to other LOs or change them in any way except to make the canvas size bigger. Even then I can't add other images TO them. Am I doing something wrong, missing a step? Help appreciated.

I'm flat out guessing here, but could these be indexed color? And if you changed them to RGB color, would they be usable?

To do this (in Elements) go to Image>Mode. If it says indexed, change it to RGB.

You can use your rectangle marquee and drag the box around the entire page and then drag it to your new page....I'm not sure how they become an indexed document, but that is what I do to use them.
