Default Themes

Hi Everyone,
I'm not a designer and I'm fairly new to the world of digi-scrapping. I hope I'm not out of line here but I'd like to throw out a request... several actually. I'm a genealogist and I'm constantly looking for themes that are time (era) specific to use with my collection of old family photos. Vintage is nice but most of the time it's Victorian in nature (1880s-1910s). I'd love to see some kits designed with themes for different eras like the "Roaring 20s"... the era of gangsters, Flappers, and art deco. Or how about the 1940s with WWII stuff, the Big Band era, Victory gardens, etc. The 1950s would be fabulous with all the sherbet colored cars, poodle skirts, lots of chrome, juke boxes, & feather boas. The 1960s with tie-dyed, flower power and peace signs would be a natural. If anyone is looking for design ideas, please consider these. My genealogy buddies would love to see kits and quick pages with time-specific themes.

And one more design idea while I'm at it... how about ethnic themes? I've seen some for Scottish and Irish/Celtic, and a couple for the French but I would love to see themes for Polish, German, Italian, Greek, Russian, Spanish, etc. If anyone knows where time (era) specific themes, or ethnic themes are available I'd really like to know about them. I'd be delighted to pass the information on from my genealogy blog. Thanks!

Thumbs up

Hhmmm...very interesting idea!! I do a lot of genealogy too and I would love to see more era specific material. I'll bet there is some stuff out there somewhere but it would be fun to create too.

Smile Great idea

If anyone is interested in pursuing it I can set up forum and gallery catagories for it, any good name ideas? My first thought is “Era and Ethnic Themes” but I am sure someone can come up with something better.

I like the the theme you came up with Julie, and I can't think of anything else.
But in the meantime, here is a Photo Impact site that has some png and jpg files in some of the kits that maybe some one can use. May of 2007 Mega kit is 1950's era. I am not sure if the ufo files can be converted for other programs.

All kits and elements are free!

Hope this helps.

This site has a great selection of vintage of all eras. Check it out. Just type vintage in the search box on the upper right side of the page. I was very surprised and pleased at just how much there was available. I paged through 110 different kit, papers, etc on this site.

I thought this one was especially cute!

I downloaded the Fabulous 50s file from www.pii-scrabook-crafts.com site but I couldn't open much of it. When I un-zipped it most of the files were in the .ufo file format. What is that? I tried to look it up through Microsoft's file definition database and it didn't know what it was. I'm assuming it's a file format native to a particular software, but which one? I was so excited when I saw this kit but besides a good sized selection of tiles (in .jpg format) there's only 6 elements I can use. Very disappointing! I'm wondering why anyone would go through all the work to create these pieces but not convert/save them in the standard .jpg or .png file formats that everyone else seems to use. Any ideas?

Wow! With all of those kits, all of my kids' growing up years will have a good theme. They were born from 1970 - 1984. So they were growing in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and into 2000s. I was born in the first of the baby boomer time - 1946 so started school in the 50s.

I have followed the links mentioned here (and was able to glean many freebies) to get the 50s - 60s kits. I have just one question - is there any way to convert files from .UFO to png and jpg? I can convert bmp and gif, that's easy, but what about .UFO? If not, I will toss them. Should I get a trial version of the photo impact and could that help?

Thank you all so very much for all of the suggestions about where to go. I found some lovely blogs with so many freebies. I do nearly all of my scrapping with freebies. I have enough now that I don't spend on kits, just EHDs. Candee, I have been going to your blog for quite a while and love your creations.:p

Also another site with fun, older things is Twisted Papers. They have a monthly newsletter with freebies and they have a store, they adore heritage things. http://www.twistedpapers.com/home.html

The new sister site to digital freebies - digital scrapbooking freebies has 2 new kits each month and some vintage ephemera. I am sure I will think of more sites later. I will add the link back here next time I go there. ool:
