Yay! You are on Round 3. Except… Round 3 will be the toughest round. This round is our No CU round. Everything must be created by you, whether by camera, scanner, hand, computer or a combination of all. You may use any tools that came with your computer or with your photo-editing software. You may not use plug-ins (eye candy, filter forge, art rage, etc.)
We are originally a heritage, genealogy scrapbooking site, and we still have some lovely vintage products perfect for those preserving those memories. It is no longer all we are, but this round our theme gives a nod to both our heritage and contest theme. This week you will create a mini kit around “The Evening News” and your palette core is provided. It is up to you to add a splash of color to the palette. In keeping in the spirit of this theme, I strongly encourage vintage hues. Round 2 Rules Theme: Evening News Palette: Vintage Hues
All previews must be posted in the Annual Next Designer Contest Gallery: NDC 2011: Round 3 Evening News. Please post your download links there as well. You may use any outside host including 4shared/rapidshare/boxnet etc. You must use ZIP files only. Do not use RAR. You may blog all you like about the contest. Voting will be done by theStudio Design & Admin teams only. Round 3 kit will be due September 19, 2011 by 23:59 EST. Round 3 results will be posted September 22, 2011 by 6:00 am EST. I have worked hard to make these rules as clear and easy to understand as possible. However, if you have any questions please post here or PM me. Round 3 does come with a reward for every winner. There is a phenomenal CU gift basket in here for all the make it to Round 4, the finals. Good luck! Toiny hex codes

What about styles and brushes? Would those be considered CU?

Nothing that is cu is allowed, unless you created it yourself for cu.
So brushes, styles, overlays, anything not created by you is NOT allowed. hope that makes it a little clearer hun and thanks for asking good luck!

I was afraid to come see what the next challenge was based on a couple of comments made in the Round 2 winners thread about it being tough but oh, Oh, OH, I totally LOVE this challenge. Love anything vintage. And, since I prefer to design with minimal use of CU this will be fun!
![]() Good luck everyone! |

Quick question, can we use styles that we have created but the style was created using a CU item?
For instance, I have glitter styles I have made, but I used a glitter overlay to create the style? I am thinking no, but thought I would make sure ![]() Looking forward to the challenge! |

Stock Photos = CU Item, sorry Rachel - but you can take your own photos and extract from them
![]() Regarding the style, I would have to say that it would be considered a CU item, since you used someone elses overlay to help you create it, sorry! This round is meant to see what you can do without any "help" from anyone else, so if you didn't create it from scratch, you can't use it! PS & PSE come equipped with some great shapes/styles/brushes/patterns/textures, don't be afraid to use them and play, play, play! Filters are my most favorite thing to play with, layer styles being my second... you'll be amazed what you can create with just the tools in your program! ![]() I'm on a hunt for some good tutorials out there, I'll be back with some links for you all!

Tuts would be great. I had a hard time creating my paper textures with the brushes only in Photoshop. I have a fantastic camera and a decent scanner but my stuff still comes out a bit blurry. Is it okay to use the basic shapes that came with photoshop?
I don't mind the extracting and enjoy looking for things to use but it's getting the photos clear or the scans right that I have trouble with. Ironically, I am finishing reading the book "The Help" right now (by Kathryn Sockett) which is set in the 1960's. I have some good ideas if I can put them down. |

it is absolutely okay to use those shapes! Anything that came standard with your program may be used, so put those shapes/styles/patterns/textures/filters to use here!
I just posted a ton more links to tuts in the Tutorial thread
