Week 1: Scrap a Hero

Hi all! I'm excited to see you here & ready to scrap. This is a simple contest with simple prizes, it is open to everyone. Studio Designers, Admin and CT may play along for fun.

This week your assignment is to: Scrap a Hero
In honor of Memorial Day, of course. You may scrap anyone who is your hero, but if you have someone who has served in the military, well, that would just be awesome.

You may use any kit, though Studio kits are appreciated, you may use any templates, fonts, LO styles you like! The only requirement is that they are up in our Week 1: Scrap a Herogallery & by the end of the day Thursday, June 2 (so midnight EST).

Layouts will be judged & voted on privately by the Studio Design & Admin team. Winners will be announced on the weekend. Each winner gets a fantastic Studio kit free to work with for next weeks assignment. The assignment will go up on Monday no later than 6:00 a.m. EST.

I imagine that the layouts we submit must be newly created ones for this contest but thought I'd check to be sure because I have created a military layout of my father in the past. If old layouts can not be used, then would it be okay to do a 'make-over' and submit that?

Okay, because you know I can be a pain in the butt

We can scrap any hero, right? Doesn't have to be military? I do have military of my Pa - but I sort of had another idea going in my brain....

LOL and here I thought it was easy & already two questions.

Rose: You can submit an old layout if you'd like. There really are no rules except meet the theme. Next week will be tougher for everyone that makes it through. This is really just a try-out week.

Kim: Any hero is great. Though, honestly, I'd so love to see the military one of your Pa.

I scrapped this page for a friend. Her husband is in the army and the pictures are from his current deployment. Their son is 5 years old, and just didn't understand why daddy had to leave for almost a year. He also left a wife and infant daughter behind. He is due home in the next couple months from this deployment.

What a lovely thing to do for a friend! It's so hard on the kids (Dane kept yelling at me to go get Daddy from the airport, thought I'd left him there LOL). It's not a memory we look to scrap, yet it's a fantastic one to have in the years to come and for the generations to come. Great job!

I have one little question: The rules say "You may use any kit..." Does that mean we need to use just one, or may we combine a few?

Oh, I hope it was okay to combine kits...if not, I will replace or redo. But, here is my original page, using 2 kits. I so love my page of my DH, firefighter, but I always wanted to take this opportunity to scrap some military of my DS, who is also my hero! All the pages thus submitted are just gorgeous!! What an inspiring first week!!!

Here is my layout for A Hero's Story with my Uncle Bob.

On April 16th. and 17th 1947, two ships, the S. S. Grandcamp and the Highflyer, blew up in the harbor of Texas City. The disaster was one of the deadliest industrial accidents in the U.S. history, Texas was then the 11th. largest harbor in the United States. Over 500 people died and 2500 were injured, including schoolchildren. Some Monsanto engineers speculated that the blast was worse than the atom bomb which had recently exploded at Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the Texas City disaster was at ground 0. The Texas City disaster was the largest industrial disaster in United States history. These events also triggered the first ever class action lawsuit against the United States government, under the then-recently enacted Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), on behalf of 8,485 victims.
My uncle Bob was living and working there after serving in World War II in the Navy. The picture is of him in his uniform holding me.. Later he went into the Merchant Marines until he retired which was after his business blew up 16th of April 1947. On that courage day he lived because he had just walked out of his shop and was putting some thing into a car which had both doors open at the time. According to his 8 page letter he sent home to his parents, he tried to telegraph them but couldn't so wrote this letter of which I put parts of in the layout. He ran to make sure his landlord was all right.
He remembered running and seeing a woman and children sitting in the street screaming. They were all cut to ribbons with flying glass and blood was running like water. Everybody got the same idea at the same time and that was to get out of town. He then ran to see about his elderly landlord and got her out to their daughters home. Her home is in his map he drew down the street from his business. He described the dead bodies of friends and every thing that happened that day to his parents in the letter. He could not believe he was alive with all the flying items. His last paragraph is, " I have to say now is I have seen it go up before and I have seen it come down but I never saw it go up and go down beside coming out all sides at the same time. This includes my business.
