Default Photography Challenge

Following on from the popularity of the photography challenge in the just concluded, Layout Artist contest, I'll be hosting a photography challenge each month.

The aim of this challenge is to focus on the photo or photos in your page. Far too often a beautiful page is let down by a poor photo or photos.

Toiny kindly made a list of tutorials for the LOA contest and I've copied them below. They should be valuable tools for you on your journey towards better photos that will make your page shine!

Please upload your pages to the Photography Gallery HERE and then post your image and/or a link in this thread so we can all admire your work and leave lots of love and encouragement. It would be helpful and interesting too if you would like to show us how the photo/s looked before you worked your 'magic'!

Please include in your layout some products from our Studio store.

Post your pages by May 31st. All participants receive an extra 10% discount on ALL of your purchases (from the PU store only) for the following month. So, if you participate this month and get a layout posted (AND post a link here in this forum), you will receive 10% off every purchase made next month! No coupons are required. The discount will automatically be applied to your purchase. For this to work make sure that the email address you used to sign-up in the forum is the same as the email you use in the store.

Thank you in advance for participating and I look forward to seeing many great pages.

I've just posted another challenge that I'm hosting. If you go to my Variety Challenge page HERE and look at the difference between the two photos on the old layout and the new layout I think you will agree that the difference is quite apparent. On the new layout I've added a curves layer and also sharpened the photo slightly.

Here's a before and after of a full-length portrait type image in shadow. I always run my photos through Adobe's MAJOR TIMESAVER Adobe Camera Raw, AND sometimes through Perfect Photo Suite 7 (On One Software) before I put them onto a layout. I love Perfect Photo Suite presets especially for portraits and faces and other tweaks in the post-processing workflow. I almost always add a light-focusing soft vignette, and did in this image.

I'm definitely going to try this out ... I'm already "fixing" my photos but rarely try to do any extras.

Great work on this page! Do you care to share how you corrected the red eye?

Sure, I used the Red Eye Quick Fix tutorial listed above. I made a few changes because I am using PSE and the tutorial used a different program, and I also didn't understand the part about using the mask, so I just did it directly on the photo, basically you paint the eye with a round brush to match the color and then make sure you add the white reflection dot. At least that is what I got out of it. I was a little confused by parts of it, but it worked for what I wanted done.

Here is a layout that I made for Mother's Day last year. Since this is Mother's Day weekend, I thought it was an appropriated page to post. The photo of my Mom taken when she was 18 was tattered and torn with creases. The color was also faded. I used PSE11 built-in programs to restore it. I used the 'spot-healing brush' to repair the damage and help smooth out the creases. I also used the Saturated Slide Film to enhance the colors. I was very pleased how well this one turned out.

BTW, my mom will be 94 next month and is still living.

I would show the original photo that I scanned in, but it was lost when I had a computer crash last fall. Thank goodness I had the repaired photo saved in a back-up file.

I used Mamma Dear Pink by Booland Designs.

What a BEAUTIFUL page and perfect timing for Mother's Day of course. Thank you for explaining your process of restoring the photo. You are so lucky to still have your mother. My mum died just a little before her 94th birthday.

Oh what a challenge this is!! I rarely correct my photos and when I do I use Levels, just haven't gotten to that level yet. I used the first tutorial on the list, I duplicated the photo then added a screen. Then I used the Marquee tool selected the image and feathered it 150 pixels to blend and soften the edges so I didn't need a frame. It lightened it a little to much so I changed the opacity of that layer to 72 %. I use PSE 10. I can't wait to look at the other tutorials, thanks for the motivation. Any constructive criticism is welcome. Thank you for hosting!!

I used a variety of things on this photo. Sharpen, clone stamp, vibrancy, levels that I can think of.

Here is the picture pre my fiddling with it.

OK, FINALLY getting to this great challenge!! Here is my layout of my beautiful cat, Dora. I used quite a few methods, making sure I duplicated and then merged layers after each method. I used the Sharpen Tool, and the blending tools, both the Screen and the Soft Light at different stages of my photo correcting. I used the Filter Noise to clean up the photo. I used Burn and Dodge on different areas of Dora. I used a Layer Mask to put more green into her eyes. And then----I wanted to use the Filter High Pass, and couldn't remember how to do it and after I was all done and saved my layout---THEN--I found the tutorial in the list!! AARGGHHHH!!!!! But I'm still happy with the rusults.
