Default My computer news---not so good

Well, the verdict is in----computer DEAD----External Hard Drive---DEAD!!! Thousands of photos and hundreds of digi kits---gone!!!! I am SICK!!! He was able to back up my computer but most of my photos and kits were on my EHD and he couldn't save anything off of that. Hard lesson learned. NEVER use your EHD as your only source of storage!!! It will be awhile before I can afford a computer but meanwhile my computer guru will back up my computer on to my friend's computer. She has a huge storage space with almost 900 gigs of memory still available. I can't download PSE 8 as I have already downloaded it twice, which is your limit, but I still have one more download on my PSE 10, even though I don't like PSE 10. I will just have to learn it!! Then I am going to sign up with Carbonite. Does anyone use that?

Nancy, I am so sorry to hear about your computer and EHD failure. Yes, you should have stuff backed up in a couple of spots. I backed mine up on DVDs in addition to the EHD. I keep my photo camera chips so that I always have them as a backup. Those photos I have scanned in go onto a DVD, too.

I just got a 2T EHD yesterday. Need to get it plugged in and copy my files from the new computer onto it. Yes, starting over with a new computer is a PITA! Hope you are able to get up and running again. My heart aches for you.

I have hear both good and bad about Carbonite. I haven't used it due to that. PSE10 does take some getting used to - but I like it when I was using it. Made the switch to PSE11 easier as it uses some of the same tools, etc.

Nancy, I am so sorry you have lost so much. I have just within the past hour recovered my EHD that has ALL of my scrapbooking stash on it (2TB worth of data). A couple of weeks ago there was an incident involving a kitty and a power strip and cables. I suspect that was the origin of the issue.

I backup my EHDs and hard drive twice a week on a schedule. I normally check the status of those once a week, but did forget to do that last week (won't forget again because I would have known of the pending failure 5 days earlier). I knew the date of the last successful incremental backup copy. Yesterday around 11 am after I got a new EHD to replace the failed EHD, I started the automated recovery process. When I went to bed last night at 11 pm, it told me it had 18 hours left on the restoration. But with everything closed except the restoration, it actually finished sometime during the night. When I got up at 4:30 this morning and checked the automated restoration had completed successfully. Then I moved to the manual recovery phase. I printed a directory of my download folder for September (stored on a different EHD) and my spreadsheet (on yet a different EHD) with an entry for each folder in my scrapping stash. I spent an hour reconciling the two and verifying my process. Worked like a charm. From there I spent another hour unzipping those downloads that needed to be applied. By 9 am, 22 hours after the restoration began I am back in business. The ONLY work that I completely lost was something I was trying to figure out this weekend. . . .I wasn't successful on that front so the lost work was going to be deleted anyway.

Going forward, I do have some plans to clean up my stash a bit. I have all those pesky previews stored with the kit. . .I don't use them, might as well get rid of them. I also should move all TOU's to the primary designer folder and delete all the ones stored in the kit folders. That too will save some room and will make things go faster.

I have had to replace computers and my backup process worked well for that. I have had to recover individual files before because I accidentally deleted something and this process worked great for that. This is the first time I have had to recovery an EHD.

I use Norton Ghost as my backup manager, my work/stash information is stored in Excel, and I have modified Windows 7 to enable printing a folder directory. The last time I had to replace a computer the new Operationg System forced me to upgrade some of the software that I used - including Photoshop because of some of the third-party plug-ins that I use on a daily basis.

Oh Nancy - what a loss. Hope you get yourself up and running again soon.
I have two EHDs - one for all my pictures, one for all my scrapbooking plus I subscribe to BackBlaze for offline storage. (I think) I payed $59.95 for a year and it will back up as many EHDs as I identify. The backup happens in the background and I have NEVER been bothered by it.

I'm so so sorry to hear that Nancy. To lose everything, I'd be heartbroken. I had a crash in May, my first experience with anything like that. It didn't affect my EHDs, (I have a few of them), but my Mac just died. I did lose everything on my computer and desktop, which was a lot, but at least most of my freelance jobs and scrap designs and kits were on my EHDs. However, lesson learned about the EHDs crashing as well. I think it's time for me to back EVERYTHING up on the Cloud.

When you get up and running, let me know and I'll toss a few of my kits your way to get you going. Just let me know if there's something of mine you like, or perhaps had. Good luck dear!

Amazon sells elements with a disc at an excellent price and usually no delivery charge and Elements 12 is out now so you may want to look into that when you can afford it ... no limit to installs because you have that disc in your hot little hands ... I purchased Elements 11 for $80 Canadian from Amazon.ca this summer and that includes the 13% sales tax. You still get all updates for that version of software as well.

Computer crashes ... I have an external drive that I use for backup ... you can get them with and without backup software for under $100 for a terabyte. Best investment I ever made and if you watch when they go on sale they can be under $70. Also ... computers ... I never buy new ... I buy from a local trusted company who sets me up with exactly what I need with lots of space to grow and lots of ports etc. Or if your computer is still viable ... buy a new hard drive for under $100 ... lots of ways around the costs of a new computer

Oh dear Nancy - my heart sank for you. I would see if a data recovery specialist could get details off your EHD - some specialists can. It's usually expensive but could be worth it.

I'm happy to send along some kits, too - just let me know when you have a computer again to tore them on.

I use Crashplan for backup - they had a ridiculously good black Friday sale last year ... could be worth waiting for (if they do it again, I have no idea if they will?)

Nancy, have you tried any type of data recovery software? There are ways to recover your data on your EHD!!! My husband accidentally reformatted over mine and erased EVERYTHING! I about killed him! lol But I ran a data recovery software and recovered about 95% of my stuff! this was 8 years worth of scrapbooking, all on my EHD! Lesson learned, I now use BackBlaze as an online backup, it's only $5 a month and totally worth it! Runs in the background while you're using your computer and has a continuous backup, so anything you change on your computer or EHD (adding, deleting, updating) will be backed up almost instantly! I love it!

Let us know when you can download again, we can reset all of your orders in the store for you, provided those files are still on the FTP!!

What is the issue with the EHD? Will it power on?

When I power on EHD, an icon appears in My Computer for me to click on to get into EHD. Now when I power on EHD, (and it does power on) no icon appears in My Computer. Guru computer man said it is dead. He still has a few more ideas to try and save what is on there but is not giving me any promises.
Thank you all for your kind words. I am still pretty depressed over this whole mess. To have both of them go down at the same time was really weird and hard to deal with.

don't throw it away yet, Nancy! if you can still get power to it, I have a free program that you can salvage data with by going through the DOS route I had an EHD do the exact same thing a few years ago and thought it was toast, too! Until a friend recommended this program and I was able to get everything back off of it! I have to go look up the name, I used so many of them I get all their names mixed up!

Good luck with Kimberly's program - I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.

So Sorry you are going through this. Nice to see so many offer to solve your kit problem.
I have an EHD that died and the computer guy told me to put it in the freezer for 24 hours. I believe I put it on its side. It worked and I still use it 4 years later. But I do put it in a very cold window when it is acting up. The computer guy said to download the most important things first (photos) because you never now how long the freezer fix will work. Could be an hour could be a day or like me for a long time (but don't trust it) I actually have several EHD's couple of BU. Have heard to keep you Full BU EHD powered off when you are on the internet and scan your folders before coping them to the BU EHD. Like others have learned, have a BU of your BU. Computer Guru Nephew told me to back up nightly and then BU to the one I leave off monthly. That way you have a EHD that is less likely to be contaminated.

Good Luck Nancy.

Oh Nancy....I feel for you! I recently lost an EHD and then my computer too. Luckily, most all of my scrapping files were on my other EHD's. I did lose all my photos, but have been lucky to get some of them back from family members.

Kimberly, if you find the name of that program, I would love to know it too. My EHD that crashed has power, but when I plug it into my computer, it locks up the computer. Don't know if your program could begin to help me, but if I could get my photos back off that drive, I would be jumping for joy!!!!!

I think it is wonderful that the team here at theStudio is so awesome to offer their help in getting you back up and running again Nancy......what an awesome community this is!!!!!!

My external often doesn't show an icon on Windows 7 .... I have to unplug it and reset it for it to show up again. This happens especially if I haven't used it for a couple of hours. It's a Windows 7 thing I think as it never happened when I was running XP

Oh, Nancy I am so sorry. I understand how you feel. I lost a hard drive and thought every photo I had was gone. I had scanned all of my photos and put all digi photos on it. I was sick. About two weeks before this happened, we had gone out of town for a few days and my daughter took care of the pets. I had often told her that she should get copies of the family photos. While she was at my house, she backed all of my photos up on her backup program. I was so happy, I cried. I still back up on EHDs (two of them) each week. But, now I use BackBlaze too. I chose this because it will backup the EHDs too. No problems and love it. Not a large cost. My son uses it too. He lost his computer and hard drive and called them. When he got a new one, they did all the work to restore. My daughter got a new computer and they did all the work to set it up for her too.

Good luck, I hope you get all of your files, photos, pages and supplies back.

OMG!!! What horrible news!!! I'm so sorry. Like several other folks mentioned, I use BackBlaze and the price is only $5.00/mo (but I understand they have deals every once in a while). LOVE it ... but I also have a network hard drive that backs up all the computers in the house (BackBlaze is only for my "work" computer).

Nancy I knew these designers here would offer to resend kits etc!! And to have all your orders restored so you can download again is exceptional!!

If I could I would send you all my kits....but have limitd internet...plus I might get my backside slapped for doing that lol

Hopefully someone can help to get that EHD working again!! Don't just listen to one computer guy
