From the Piggy February Photography Challenge - Black & White

Hi everyone! My name's Christine (aka Digilicious Designs). I'll be your host for our monthly Photography Challenges and I'm really looking forward to exploring and improving our photographic skills with you!

The Challenge:
This month's Challenge will focus on the art of Black & White Photography. Present a photograph that was originally shot in colour, then converted to Black & White. Show us the original and then the B & W version, and give us some brief details on what software you used, and any actions/presets that need to be credited.

Post your Photo's HERE.

If you need a little bit of help or inspiration, there are some amazing sites, blogs and resources out there just waiting to be explored! I love Pioneer Woman and she has a section completely devoted to Black & White Photography. Shasta Betty also has some fantastic conversion advice and techniques. I tend to use Adobe Lightroom to edit my photos and if you do the same, you are no doubt aware of the gazillion free presets available on the web! For those who use Photoshop and PS Elements, I can personally recommend the actions by EZ Actions (formally Photoblast). I have used them for years and they give some great results!

Also, check out theStudio's new Photography Blog! I will be updating it regularly, and will primarily focus on B & W photography during February. We hope to talk more in depth about techniques and pass on great tips and resources as we find them!

So, without any further ado, lets get snapping!

So I thought I might kick things off with a couple of recent photo's I took and converted to B & W in Adobe Lightroom. The first is of my hubby, and I think you'll agree that the B & W version is far more appealing than the colour! He's a hard-working man and I love how the B & W highlights his 'weathering' and character .

...and the second is of my son. I love 'blasting' out my B & W's with lots of light and contrast - I think it gives quite a dramatic effect!

Can't wait to see what you all come up with!!

Awesome challenge, so we don't need a layout, just a color and black and white photo, right?

Here's my try. I wasn't sure about the size, so it might be too small or too large. I like candid photos, those that catch the moments no one thinks are being caught. This is one of my grand daughter, Julia last Easter.
For this photo, I duplicated the photo and used an adjustment layer, tweaked the sliders to my liking. I then adjusted the levels and curves, sharpened a bit, then duped the photo again, and used the high pass filter. This I reduced the opacity to around 95%.

These are amazing! I'm loving the before and after. This is my new favorite thread. I really like the contrast on the b&w's. Every picture is better in b&w. WOW guys!

This is Bullet. We were babysitting her while my daughter took her vacation. For some reason, she did not want to take Bullet to Disney World. She is a wonderful, sweet, spoiled lap dog. I was just learning to use my new camera at the time and played around with all of the settings. The photos all had problems. Although I learned a lot by playing with those settings, some photos that could have been usable just were not. This one was saved by turning it to grayscale and playing with lighting, contrast, and trying different filters. I use PSPx3. I just love to play with all of the toys in there.

Oh, beautiful ladies! Bullet looks so soft and cuddly The B&W really enhances the softness of the fur!

I'm in love with Bullet! I love how focused you are right on his little nose. Adorable.

Joba, Brandelynne's eyes are striking in b&w! You guys are rocking this.

Smooches,

T

I've never really experimented with changing a color to Black and White. I did learn a few things!! It's kind of fun to play around with. I used to have PSE2 and then went to PSE5, and boy what a difference. Am trying to get used to everything all over again. Have been out of the loop for several years. So hear are my attempts. I think I may have made them too big?!?

Here's my original photo:

and the black and white photo:

I used Photoshop Black and White action by Jean31 and diabolical action by David Nanchin both found on DeviantArt website.

It's great how the photo went from a bright, happy photo to one that looks more sinister!

I have only just started to play around with turning photos Black & White. I was trying out a new Photoshop Action from My Four Hens Photography called Lavender B&W from the Color Play set and really liked the way it turned out.
