Arrow March Photography Challenge - 'White'

This month I have a Challenge for you that will really get your creative juices flowing! It is tricky, and challenging, but I'm sure you will have fun and we'll see some amazing photos!

The color 'white' is this month's task. Either edit a photo to highlight the white areas, re-color areas of the photo to white, or photograph something white. Examples might be snowy landscapes, milk, a wedding dress, flowers etc.

For your inspiration, I have a site you can visit that recently had a similar challenge... HERE. Scroll down the page to see the incredible photos that have been submitted!

Toiny and I have also had a play, and here are our examples...

The first is by Toiny, very inspirational!

Toiny says...
"I used my raw onONE plugin to tone the blues in this photo.
I used a free texture on flickr to create, uh, texture
I added a favorite quote by John Muir"

Toiny also found this cool photo from Glee...

In my first pic, the rose was originally pink, very pretty, but I wanted my beautiful butterfly to stand out more...

I duplicated the original photo and layered them on top of each other in Photoshop. I desaturated and played around with the lighting/exposure on the top layer, then erased the butterfly portion to expose the colored butterfly underneath.

In my second, the original photo was of my son wearing a bright red parker. I love his eyes in this pic, so I faded out the background and his face till they were quite white in some places, which really highlighted his eyes.

I hope you find this month's challenge fun and rewarding - it's a great opportunity to try out a new technique or adjustment and really get creative! You just never know what masterpiece you might turn out!!

Happy snapping

Here is our pet Cockatoo "Boo Boo". I often find her had to photograph, not only because she is white and gets over exposed, but also cause she can get a little crabby at times a pitch a fit.

I love this photo. I've seen these type of photos before but don't know how to fade out the colour. Any tips? Thanks

Hi Vicki! I use Lightroom to edit my photos. In this instance I...

- adjusted the Temperature & Tint downwards
- increased the exposure and added Fill Light
- increased the brightness & vibrance
- significantly reduced the saturation
- decreased Shadows and added Noise

Not sure if any of this makes sense - can you tell me what program you use to edit your photos?

Here's what the photo looked like originally...

... so as you can see, the change and the impact is quite significant!

Here's my effort. Original was taken this winter in my back garden after the heavy snow.
All done in my CS3 PS. Photo taken on a Lumix point and shoot digital.
Original

I messed about with various filters and added an edging mask for this one

and on this I again used various filters to get a much whiter look

I love the different takes on this. Very cool & very different photos. The end results are all stunning. I've looked at them all several times. The perspective each of you brings makes me that much more excited to play with my camera and with photoshop. Oh yeah. I so didn't need that LOL.

Smooches,

T

When I think of white, I think of my wedding because not only was I wearing a white dress, we were married in a white temple and it was a very white, snowy day in January But I need work on editing white pictures or another program other than PSE. Here's the original on the left.
