JOURNALING: 17 year old Lukas Kaugars from the Broadmoor Skating Club caught my eye a couple of years ago as a Novice skater. I’ve always been surprised with the style with which he skates because I thought he looked more like he should be on the junior football squad than on a figure skating team. I thought this year’s short program in Omaha, to “Hallelujah,” was beautiful. Unfortunately, the judges didn’t agree and he was in 8th place going into the long program. It was when he skated to “Jump Swing Blues”, “Sleepwalk”, and “King Swing” with such style and panache, that I realized he must be influenced by another “show” skater from the Broadmoor, the 2011 National Champion, Ryan Bradley. Lukas finished the 2013 competition in 11th place, but he is still a favorite of mine.
