My dream vacation
Have you ever dreamed of visiting a certain place and your dream came true, but it wasn’t quite as wonderful as you had thought it would be? Have you ever been on an escorted tour, been paired with a “roommate” so you wouldn’t have to pay the “single supplement,” and lived with the roommate-from-**** for the length of the trip?
For years I dreamed of visiting Russia. And, in March of 1976, my dream came true. I booked a 10-day trip on my own with a tour company. They assigned me a roommate, another lady who was traveling on her own. We met on the plane flying across the Atlantic! But, no disaster here. It was like we had known each other for YEARS! The rest of our group couldn’t believe we’d just met. Sheila helped make this a memorable vacation.
But, it was the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) that made my wonderful dream a reality. I can still remember bussing in from the airport and seeing this magnificent jewel of a city for the first time. My initial impression: red neon signs in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet. My second impression: I’m home. It just felt SO comfortable. I’d always joked I was Russian in a past life. Leningrad made me believe it!
I was the first of our group to drink the water, even though we’d been warned it might cause “problems.” (It didn’t). I was able to communicate in Russian enough to get tea from the “floor lady” in Moscow and keep us out of jail in Kiev when a policeman stopped us for “jay-walking.” All meals were included, and I loved the food. I mean RUSSIAN caviar and RUSSIAN vodka! Some of my fellow travelers groaned on our last day when I said I hoped we would have potatoes again at lunch. The history, the art, the ballet (at the Bolshoi for gosh sakes!), the opera, even the circus! I saw three! I’d never been to a circus before in my life!
My dream vacation - come true.
