Kitesurfing or kiteboarding is an adventure surface water sport that has been described as combining wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics into one extreme sport. It harnesses the power of the wind to propel a rider across the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (similar to a wakeboard). The kiteboard with or without foot-straps or bindings, and the large controllable kite, propel the rider and the board across the water at up to 30 miles per hour on windy days. The kite surfers can catch air of up to 15 feet when waves are big, and hang in the air for 8-10 seconds. On this gorgeous winter day in San Diego, there wasn’t a lot of wind to help out the kitesurfers, but at least they pretty much had the beach to themselves. Yes, wetsuits are definitely necessary for surfers and kitesurfers during much of the year. The water around San Diego beaches averages 56–58°F during January. Brrr. [info from Wikipedia]
