PARENTS AND BROTHER 1920

My mother and father eloped in a horse and buggy to marry in June 1916 at ages 16 and 19. My mother was oldest of 12 children. She had 8 children, 7 lived to adulthood. William, the first, was born in 1919 and died in 1921 of dehydration from diarrhea, the #1 cause of death of children in the early 1900s. I was the 7th, born during the depression. My father worked on the railroad, and the TVA Dam in N Alabama. I was almost 3 when he died at the age of 39 in an accident. This was before Social Security or pensions. My mother, a high school drop out, proceeded to work very hard to raise her 7 children. She remarried in 1943 and moved to TN where she lived until she died in 1988.
