Kit - Sugar Cookies & Snow by Lynn Griffen
Journaling reads: The year is 1947. Harry S. Truman is President; there is no Vice-President. Bread costs 12 cents a loaf, milk 80 cents a gallon, and eggs 66 cents a dozen. You can buy a new car for about $1,500 - but that is nearly 45% of the average annual income of $3,456.00. Minimum wage is 40 cents an hour - and gasoline for that new car runs about 13 cents a gallon. The DOW average is 181. A 1st-class stamp is 3 cents, but twice-daily mail delivery is a thing of the past. Area codes have been instituted to aid operators connecting calls. Both the Polaroid camera and transistors are invented this year. Marshall outlines a plan for European recovery, and Princess Elizabeth of Grat Britain marries Phillip Montbatten. A boy finds the Dead Sea Scrolls. Chuck Yeager breaks the sound barrier. The first microbes begin appearing that can resist penicillin - which has only been mass-produced since 1943.
Mom, Connie & Jay are living in Gering, Nebraska, but Dad has rejoined the army and is now at Camp Carson, Colorado, waiting for base housing to become available so the family could be reunited. He won’t be joining the family at his mother’s home for Christmas this year, although many of his brothers & sisters have made it, along with their families. These babies are the two littlest members of this extended family - sons of two of the three "littlest boys" of the 13 children. Jay is 10 months old, while David, son of Dad’s brother Bud, is 3 months. I can’t tell if the boys are enjoying the tree - but I bet that Jay just wanted down!
