This is my most cherished photo, my parent's wedding day in 1942. Text reads:
My mother had 17 brothers and sisters,
all Depression Era babies and all
remarkable people. Despite being born
to poverty, every one of them rose
above their humble beginnings and
became "someone", a pact they made
together upon the death of thier father.
Their collective strength has impacted
my life beyond measure, my Aunts in
particular. At a time when women
were expected to stay home and raise
babies, they were radicals and entered
the world as writers, artists, movie
studio executives, Zeigfeld dancers,
bankers, WWII Marine nurses,
real estate moguls and CIA agents.
All while raising families, some
alone being widows before 30.
They passed along their strength
to us all, and proved over and
over that laughter, and family,
are always the best medicine.
