JOURNALING: In 2011, in Greensboro NC, we met a shy 13-year old novice skater and his mom. Kevin Shum had finished 5th at that year’s Pacific Coast Sectional, a finish that was not supposed to earn him a trip to Nationals. But, here he was, about to compete at the highest level for the first time. He had learned only the week before that he was to be a replacement for an injured skater. He was shy and seemed a bit out of his element, like he didn’t believe he “belonged.”
In 2012, in San Jose CA, we met a very different Kevin Shum. This time, he had earned his way to Nationals with a 2nd place finish at sectionals. He seemed so much more confidant, happy, and relaxed. And - he took home the pewter medal, finishing 4th after skating his short program to “Vortex” and his free program to “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.”
