Journaling: Caydee Denney won the pairs gold medal at the 2010 U.S. National Figure Skating Championships with her partner Jeremy Barrett. They had won the silver medal the year before. In 2011, they slipped to 3rd, while John Coughlin and Caitlin Yankowskas took home gold. After the 2011 season, Barrett decided to concentrate on coaching. Coughlin and Yankowskas decided to go in different directions and Coughlin was thinking of retiring. Then, when Caydee was in Colorado Springs watching her younger sister train, she met John. They skated together and knew they should team up. And, in San Jose at the 2012 Nationals, less than nine months later, this accidental pairing made history. Skating a difficult and emotional long program to “Nessun Dorma,” they overcame a third place short skate to “East of Eden” to win the long program and take home the gold medal. They were the first U.S. pair to win gold with one partner, split up, and then win gold with another partner, Coughlin doing it in successive years.
