Split Pea Soup with Sausage

I have always like Split Pea Soup but here in Holland it has achieved the standing National Winter Soup (called Snert or Erwtensoep here.) There is nothing quite like a hot steaming bowl of Snert, served with a dark rye bread and a sort of bacon called katenspek, after a day of ice skating or walking in the snow. This recipe also works well as a frozen treat on a cold day. Just slip a bowlful into a ziplok bag and lay it flat to freeze. Warm it in the microwave and enjoy.
