My Aunt Sissy was my Mother's eldest sister. I always wanted to be able to play the piano and sing like she did. She sang at my wedding.
In 1934, when she was 19, my Aunt Claudia sang the role of Ramona in the Ramona Pageant in Hemet, CA. It is America's oldest and longest running outdoor drama This grand outdoor drama, set in late 1800s California, tells the fictional story of the star crossed lovers, Ramona and Alessandro. The story of Ramona was written by Helen Hunt Jackson. First published in 1884, Jackson’s novel has never gone out of print. Though her story and characters are fictional, the tragic treatment of the Indians Jackson portrays is all based on actual events which took place in Southern California in the 1870s and ‘80s. In 1922 the Hemet Valley Chamber of Commerce staged the first Ramona Outdoor Play. It is now Ca;ifornia’s state play. These pictures are from 1934 and show Claudia in her costume.
