Ode to Tok
Trained to pull a sled behind you
You thought that was what life was about
Until your chain took me off my feet
And you sat by my side until I got off my seat.
A tuft of grass, or weed, or stone,
In the way of your chain
And you'd sit without alarm
Until I told you there was no harm.
Friendly to all, even the chipmunk
I'm glad you never met a skunk!
Bird, kitten or puppy, you'd greet
With any of them you'd share your seat.
You were so smart in so many ways
Balls you wouldn't catch, or tricks perform
Although a sit pretty was your way to charm
And to me, you'd see no harm.
I'll miss you my sweet boy,
Who cares about balls and toys?!
When there's someone like you
With personality like a comfy old shoe.
You've been so ill for so long now
Smooth surfaces being your nemasis
Making your legs go everywhere but under you
You needed carpets, grass and rougher surfaces.
There's occasional seizures, along with the daily issues
Of arthritus, muscle and bones deteriorating
Your hearing got poor and then the onset of senility.
A quality life is no more a reality.
Where you go now, I hope there's, your favourite treats,
Plenty of grass and shade where you'd like to sleep,
And lots of critters for you to watch and befriend.
A nice cool breeze to brush your fur and you, to dreamland send.
