Christmas Miracle

Kit: Fa La La by Christine Mortimer (aka Digilicious Designs)

After our trip to Epcot to see the Candle Lighting Processional with Whoopie Goldberg telling the Christmas story, Grandpa got sick. Mom took him to the doctor and he told her to take him to the hospital immediately. They admitted him with what they thought was pneumonia. We soon found out it was cancer. Given his age the doctor’s didn’t feel there was much we could do. They told us he’d have six months, at most, probably less. Since there wasn’t anything they could do for him, Grandpa was released from the hospital on December 23rd.

Although nothing was kept from Grandpa, I don’t know how much he understood. The cancer was affecting his kidneys, which was affecting his brain. Suddenly his decline into what we thought was Alzheimer’s made sense. At dinner he didn’t eat as much, but he tried some of everything, all his favorite foods, the zeppole I’d promised to make him on Thanksgiving when he was asking for them, the spaghetti aglio e olio, and the baccala on Christmas Eve. Lasagna with homemade sausage and a Honeybaked ham on Christmas Day.

When Grandpa gave the blessing before the meal and he said his traditional, “and God willing, may we all be together again next year,” I had to go into the kitchen to cry. My cousin Steve was right behind me. But as difficult as it was, it was also amazing. (continued below)

Journaling continued:

For those two days, the confusion was gone. We had Grandpa back. He was alert and he knew what was going on around him. He knew who everyone was. He told his war stories to our friends Leslie and Marianne.

Two days later, Grandpa went dramatically downhill. Hospice came and we, the family, started an around the clock vigil to take care of him. He died on New Year’s Eve.

None of us will ever forget Christmas 2011 and the gift we received of one last Christmas with Grandpa.

Fantastic journaling ... the food list made me hungry and curious about recipes! The photo is bittersweet ... what a blessing to know not to take the time together for granted. Wonderful layout! I'm so sorry you lost your grandpa.
